I also have a rifle big bull tag for rimrock and it is national forrest so you cannot ride quads, i was hoping to ride mine to. There are jeep trails up there that you can ride on but not sure where they are at.
-
I brought mine last year. Then I get there and there are big signs that say no quads and everything needs to be street legal. Se Mine stayed in the truck the whole time. Watch out for all the jeeps that are on the trails. In the summer they are thick and come around the corners pretty fast.
-
Hummmmm.....
so you can wheel jeeps and not ATV's Hummmmmmm?
what dates is your tag?
have you hunted their before?
-
thats cool, i am all for working my ass off for a BIG 6x6 pay off.
I am really trying to do my homework for this tag. i see it as a pretty big honor. its my first draw and will be my first elk if i get one.
so im trying to find out where the best place to start walking is and where i can possibly see the most WAPITI.
-
Mission and kirkl, congrats on the tags! PM me for info on area. I've elk hunted Rimrock for several years.
-
Our NF roads tend to be good enough for trucks and don't need ATV's. The Jeep trails are another subject. If you hunt other western states, it's a different ballgame. They don't have the same restrictions and ATV's are everywhere and quite useful. I use a two wheeler, street legal, to do alot of scouting and moving on but when somethings down, I sure wish that it was a four wheeler. ha

Hola...
i am very excited about this hunt. its actually going to a be a reunion of my dad and I.

When I'm allowed 90% of the time I park my truck and use my quad ( on the road ). My quad uses a lot less gas then my truck, I can pull over to the side to let people pass, Less wear and tear on my truck. I can just park off to the side and go hike. It comes in real handy.
-
The difference is on National forest lands any vehicle on a road must be street legal. Most ATV's are not street legal unless you have them licesed that way, and they have to have a horn and a rear view mirror. Mine is street legal and can be ridden on the roads. Remember, your truck is also street legal, but your quad is not. Some FS guys won't pay you any mind and some will fine you and confiscate your ATV.
-
Thats what i dont want
thanks for the advice

Sorry Guys but in Washington State You had better not get caught on a Forest Service Road with your Quads . In fact there is a movement right now to make Quads ILLEGAL on state Green Dot Roads . Thats DNR & Game Deptment Roads .
Ya I know Pisses me off too, as my wife & I ride Quads.
They were trying to get it so we could License them and would be like Idaho and Be able to ride on county and forest Servce Roads but it got shot down. I'll Know more this weekend as we're going out with a big ALL Wheels group to do cleanup.

I understand all the rules for the NF i just dont understand the logic. Its a stinking gravel road in the forrest. not some black topped highway.

I work with a reserve sherriff and couple years ago in the rimrock a guy had a street legal quad then ran his plates on it and gave him a ticket for riding a quad on national forrest.
-
We see guys riding up and down Sheep Co.Rd & on Huntzinger Rd. all the time, going up to the L.T.Murray Game Range :bdid:.
And every once in a while they get nailed . :IBCOOL:

no thanks i love to hike.....not worth it...
-
The last i heard quads/atv's are allowed on all 4x4 trails as long as they have current ORV tabs. They just arent legal on any other road way. Call the Naches ranger district to be sure.
-
My pard belongs to a jeep club over here. The run the *censored* outta Rimrack all summer long, their jeeps are no where near street legal...
-
SO WHATS THE FINAL WORD????
ATV's YES OR NO?????
i just want to know if i can cruise my quad and look for some animals.
:bash:
-
no you cant ride them on the national forrest roads.
-
Not even if they are considered street legal and licensed by another state for on road use? I was told by a FS cop that it was legal as long as they had passed inspection and were licensed. Mine is licensed for Idaho which is where I normally ride, and have ridden many time on National Forest roads here in WA and never had a problem with the F&G or the FS boys when I've seen them. If it's a national forest road, and it's considered a street legal vehicle, it should not matter what state your are in. Or what state they are licensed in, it's NATIONAL forest. I could see them being able to have a say on state forest roads, and county and state hiways.
-
ok
sounds good guys thanks for the help.
its just not worth it.
i am all about walking the hills and doing it the hard way....but i just hate it when im sweating my balls off and some Jack ass comes flying past me on a quad....
anyways thanks again and good luck this year guys

I purchsed a Suzuki DTZ400S and put Dunlap 606 knobbies on it. It is a dualsport and has a license plate etc. I have a motorcycle endorsement on my license.
To ride on a FS Road legally the vehicle must be street legal. To run on the trail system it has to have an ORV tag. If the trail is open to ride an ORV and your quad has an ORV tag your are good to go. You can drive on the FS road to cross the road to get to an trail. i.e. trail intersecting the FS road.
That makes sense?

....but i just hate it when im sweating my balls off and some Jack ass comes flying past me on a quad....
:yeah: I hate nothing more than to see someone blatantly riding/driving in any closed area. Sets a bad image. I'm not against ATV's...love 'em. But seeing/hearing a motor out in the closed areas gets me fired up. Not to get off topic but a few years ago we started to hike into an area off the green dots in Manastash on an old closed logging road and half mile in there's a travel trailer and horse trailer. :bdid::mor: I mean really, if you have horses wtf are you doing so far in!! Needless to say I was so pissed off I marked the GPS to tell the GW but by the time we came back they packed up and left.
There....I feel better now. ;)
-
yeah i am with you.
i was hunting near teanaway last year and i was just getting into a good area that i was sure was holding some BUCKS and this *censored* on a quad came up the same trail i was hiking and i just threw my arms up and he just rode past.
i was so hacked i went back to camp and got drunk.
hahahaha
why dont they just obey the rules.
i love quads but have some freakin common curtesy.
-
I asked the sherriff here at work about the ATV/national forest and this was his reply. Which tells me that if your quad is street legal that you still cant ride it in the national forest. And i think that is what TheHunt was saying above.
Any vehicle in order to be driven on forest service roads in the national forest must be street legal. The only way you can use an ATV in national forest is on designated trails. Motorcycle trails are considered single tract trails and they cannot be ridden there. Only trails designated for jeeps and ATV's. I did say that I believe the forest service is looking at the possibility of allowing ATV's to be ridden on some designated roads. But those rules have not been adopted

Hey missionBB,
Carry a can of bear spray and give the mf'er a shot to the face as he goes by. :chuckle:
-
Well for what it's worth, I meant that the roads were good enough that you could run your truck and not damage it. Hence they didn't "need" an ATV Which obviously can go alot of places trucks can't and not get damaged.
Suffice it to say, If you do drive an ATV in Washington on a NF road, you better be ready to fork some cash out. I don't agree with it, but it is the rule.
-
Here is why Quads in this state are not and can not be street legal.......
Can an off-road vehicle or motorcycle be licensed for street use in the state of Washington?
No, in order for a vehicle to be street legal, the vehicle must meet the federal requirements for road use and be certified by the manufacturer to meet those standards. Therefore, the vehicle must be originally manufactured for road use in order to be licensed in Washington State.

Yep, that is why I purchased a dualsport.
-
Yamaha 250 I ride on the steet's to go to work and on all forest road's and never been stopped or bothered. Two wheel is for real!
-
:yeah: :llam: I just bought a new 2008 Lamaha, oops Yamaha WR250R dualsport :bash:, best of both worlds! Now I have to wait for my knee to heal!
