My buddy is looking at buying his first hunting rifle and has been looking to me for guidence. Looking like he might buy a Savage Light weight hunter 7mm-08rem this week and i'm not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous.
-
Why do they have to make the bolt look that way?! Stupid! I hate looking at it knowing mine doesn't look that cool. Actually I painted my gun so mine looks like crap but it's hard to spot in the woods.
-
5.5 pounds. 1:9.5 twist. accutrigger
-
OOOOOH! Dat's purty!
Although, I don't like my Savages that light, I like them a little more like this :chuckle:

That used to be a 7mm Rem Mag, only thing left of the original rifle is the receiver and the bolt body. Now it's a 300 WM :P

What is that gun, Killbilly?
-
Looks like a Model 10 in a Choate Ultimate Varmint?

actually, it's a 110 in the Choate Ultimate Varmint....
-
well he bought it. and he ordered a redfeild 3-9x40 and picked up a couple boxes of corelokts and hornady superformance(which he said were both 19$ box :o )
For someones first rifle, thats a good'n
-
Ive been drooling over that gun since it came out. I wish they would come out with a stainless synthetic light weight

i dunno if stainless is strong enough for the way they made the action.
-
Hey Addicted, did he have to special order it? I'm trying to find one in 270 for my old man but can't find them anywhere...some stores haven't even heard of it. I've been burnt before by ordering a shotgun without personally seeing it and I won't make that mistake twice.
Or better yet, has anyone seen one locally?
Thanks!
-
They had some at Cabelas in Lacey a couple of months ago.... Wished I had some spare change at the time.
-
He's in south carolina and picked it up at the store where they had 2 of them. one in 7mm08 and one in 30.06.

Thanks! Looks like I'll be making a drive to Lacey this weekend!!! :IBCOOL:

it has the lightweight perks of a kimber, the near guaranteed accuracy of a savage, and it is sexy lookin to boot.
take your camera

Will do! But, if they have a 270 or 243 I'll be more concerned about taking cash...

what about 260rem or 6.5 creedmore?
-
My old man is...well, he's old. He's got the old timers disease and he wants to be able to buy a box of shells in any backwoods beer or hardware store :chuckle: I'll get him the 243 if they have one, although he might not be very happy about it, only because it weighs in at 5.5 lbs and the 270 is at 6 lbs. That doesn't sound like much of a difference for you and I but for someone with MS, it's the difference between hunting and not...

i bet that half pound doesnt make up for the difference in recoil either.

I was at Cabelas yesterday afternoon. There were several there. Didn't look to see what calibers...

Heading down this weekend to take a look!!!
-
He set up his rig last night.
-
He's a new shooter so i told him that the gun is going to far exceed his talents at first, especially with how light it is.... but eventually it will split hairs for him.
-
Let us know how she shoots and handles. Ill be interested to hear.
-
he took it to the range.
Couldnt get it on paper at 25 meters. come to find out, it has the round reciever and he bought flat rear mount.
-
:bash: Oh that sucks! You shoulda been there to help him out :chuckle:
-
your right. This washington boy should catch a red eye from germany to south carolina to help a newbie out..... I wish it was that easy. He's got other new guy problems going on like finding a place to hunt and learning the ropes so if anyone has any hook ups around sumter SC let me know. lol.
-
That's no excuse. You know they have MAC flights from Germany to Pope AFB all the time :chuckle:
If it was NC, I could help with hunting advice, wish I knew SC better. Maybe if he was closer to Greenville, I still have a friend or two there
-
He has had it at the range a couple of times now.
He is not happy with the groups it is shooting but now that I have seen a pic of his shooting stance I have given him some pointers. These rifles are far too light for a wobbly set up if you are expecting good grouping.
-
And he shoots with the wrong eye.... :bash:
-
I like the classic look the put on those redfields.
-
The kick is very notable to him. I'm happy i talked him out of a 300winny
-
I would have to blame the driver on those groups. :twocents:
-
ditto.
-
Na it's just another savage :peep: :chuckle:
-
I would have to blame the driver on those groups. :twocents:
:yeah: Look at the group in the lower left. I imagine (minus that one flyer) that is what the rifle is capable of and those others seem to show a problem with breathing and maybe some slight trigger pull problems.
Nice looking rifle though, I am jealous too.
-
He is heading to the range again today with hopefully better technique so we can see what this puppy can do.
-
I wish he was a little more experience to give us his take on that new redfield. Seems like an awesome scope for the money. Hopefully he can get er dialed in.
-
I've played with the redfields and actually bought one for my pops. Really leupolds only scope thats worth what your paying for it. :twocents:
-
:nono: Now come on! You know better then that.
I have had some redfields over the years and they have been good scopes. The new ones are pretty nice as well.
You get quality with Leupold and there is a reason there is more Leupold's sitting on peoples rifles then probably any other brand
-
I've got a new redfield and love it. Great value.
-
I was thinkin of slapping a 2-7x33 with the accu-range reticle on my 270 for a temporary scope.
-

because many people think their only options are bushnell and lupy.
I'm not bashing the redfield. I like them for what they are. I dont have much use for one on any of my current rigs though.

Problem with the 2-7x33 on the .270 is the short tube leingth on the long action. may have limited mounting options.
-
You just want me to pull out the Leupy pics again, don't you?
-
i've got a redfield 3-9x40 on my 7-08. great scope.

Mullets used to be popular too, doesnt mean they are good.
-
Mullets aren't popular anymore???
-
Center group first then top right and clockwise.
He said that it once got so hot he couldnt keep his hand on it :bash: still...got better though.
