Title: Shed Antler Hearth Broom
Post by: Smokepole on January 28, 2012, 09:05:57 PM
Well, okay... this wasn't really a shed.  I killed this buck up in the Alta unit in 2005.  I think that's the year all the big hawgs were taken in the Okanogan.  The bucks had huge bodies and lots of fat.  This one was round as a pig.  Anyhow now his horns are gonna be next to my fireplace.

Quadrafire suggested making one of our brooms on shed antlers.  Pretty good idea, if you have some sheds.  Turns out it was a pain in the arse to make, since these antlers flatten out to quickly, and they aren't very long.  Thinner, longer antlers would be a lot better to weave to.

If anyone would like to provide their own sheds, I can make them into brooms for $35 plus shipping.  If you are near Stanwood, drop 'em off!   :)

Thanks thanks Bean.  Much appreciated.  Hey Machias i won't be on the forum again till Tuesday.  You check your antlers & let me know if you come up with something.

btw...

I made a mistake at a market.  A lady asked, "where did you get the antlers for this beautiful broom?"

me:  "I hunted that buck down, ma'am.  Then I shot him and packed him out 3 miles.  We go hunting every year."

You should have seen the look on that poor gals face.  Ouch.  From now on I'll just talk about sheds!   :chuckle:

Well they are tough, and you can use them a lot without wearing them out.  We had a handmade corn broom on our porch 17 years.  It did fine till the kids left it out in the rain for a week.
