So here it is again ... I can not believe how fast it comes and goes... I know a few people who want to get out and give it a try for the first time ....Unfortunately its hard to take all the people who ask so I decided I am giving my time to the youth hunt this year ... Couple little buddies have been begging So I am on it ... Cant wait !!!I plan on doing alot more this year than last year ...Heck never went last year until the last week but their was no regrets ...it was a calling fest !!! If I cant call a bird in then I would rather let him walk ...its all about the gobble for me and listening to all those hens in the morning ...That alone keeps me fired up ...I have been practicing for a solid month now but its what you have to do to get sharp ...Seems to be alot of experienced turkey hunters on this site and I am glad we all enjoy it ...its just a fun time to be in the spring woods hearing the calls of the wild ...I guess I need to hit a banquet this year ...Have not been since I turned mine over :dunno:

Hey BH45, Your getting me fired up for the season. I finally have my trip approved and hopefully we can get together. I'll be at the cabin 17th april - 6th May. I have a fairly full house on the weekends, but always room for more (on the floor :chuckle:). Hopefully we can hook up for a hunt.
-
gobble gobble.... can't wait
-
BH45 you got me thinking I better pull out the calls and get going. I've never been good at the mouth calls but maybe this year I'll give it another try. I always end up sounding like a wounded goose.
-
im already putting stuff in my new Black Creek Turkey Tux...cant wait...gobble gobble thwack...or boom.
-
I hope that I can find my turkey call :chuckle:
-
All yeah ... it should be a good year ....cant wait ..... we all need to hook up one day .....maybe at turkey days in Colville !!!!
-
I know the time is starting to draw nigh when I start ordering more turkey books online, when I haven't read all the ones from last year!! :dunno:

I got $75 to spend at Cabelas for Christmas. Trying to figure out how to best expand my turkey toys. Maybe a box call? Maybe a better choke for my sons 20g? Maybe some nodoze for trying to get up in the middle of the night?
-
A good choke tube really makes a ton of difference! I use to use just a factory full choke and was never really happy with my pattern past about 30 yards. I started running some higher end chokes and man! did it change things! I have taken birds at around 50 yards and also use one of the chokes for my shotgun when calling for yotes. I have shot yotes with 4 buck a long ways out there. My money would be on a new choke tube for the boy and maybe a new box call
-
is there anywhere to turkey hunt on the west side?
-
Birds are gobbling and strutting..first report.
-
I just got my Cabelas turkey magizine and they have out some new decoys .. man they are nice but spendy !!! Zink Avian-X will run ya $ 79.99 for the hen and $ 99.99 for the Jake :o cant force myself to spend that kinda money on a decoy ... I personally do not use them much except in the 1st part of the season ... Just me ! then they have DSD Decoys and JEEEZ Batman they will cost ya valuable gas money :chuckle: :chuckle: $ 159.00 for the Jake and $ 119.00 for the hen .... think I just keep the ones I got :dunno: :twocents: :yike: they do look good !!
-
They look nice..but I use a stuffer hen and it works just fine. But she is hard to pack around all over.
-
Yelp,
I remember your stuffer. Isn't that the one that the eagle picked up?
I would go for a Colville Turkey Day Event. I'm afraid I'd probably be the one coming back to the campfire without any birds though! I don't know if I could take listening to everyone talk about giant gobblers walking in and struttin around while I sit sheepishly. On the other hand I'm pretty confident I could probably accomplish putting down a couple beers.

All the years I have been over huntin turks I never once went to Turkey Days..... I just hate to take time off hunting :dunno: :chuckle: but I should try and make it this year

Sundance
Funny but not funny. I shouldn't be amazed at behavior but I still am.
-
gobble gobble.... can't wait
:yeah:
-
Calls are warmed up, gun is ready time to get it on.
-
Sounds like SunDance needs to get a little further back from the road ....I hate when people ignore No Tresspassing signs :bash: and I seriously hate it when one invades on another ones space .... What I am saying is if you know another hunter is in the area Just avoid it all together ... Thats just the way this game is played ... even if it is state land ...if someone beats you to it then move on ....JUST THE RIGHT THING TO DO :yeah: Some other good advice is if someone beats you to a spot in the morning and you wanted to hunt there too , just wait till 11 or high noon and go give it a try ...you may be shocked in the results ... I have rolled many birds doing this .... just get out and hunt .. DO NOT KNOW TO YA GO !! :twocents: :chuckle:

I'm sure I couldn't enjoy hunting if I was ignoring no trespassing signs. It just doesn't sound relaxing or much fun. I don't even like getting close enough to worry about the animal accidentally going over a boundry line.

Last year I was working a bird at first light for a youth hunter. I had this bird so worked up and he was hammering every time I made the softest of calls. It was just getting light and knew he would be flying down soon. All of a sudden he shut up and I could not understand why. Then I see two young kids with no adult sneaking along trying to walk in and shoot him out of the tree. They got to about 30 yards from me and I could see one had a shotgun the other one had a 22 rifle :bash: I yelled at them and told them they need to read the regs and ditch the 22. They said it was for squirrels :bash: I asked them if they thought I was born yesterday :bash:

i have never been on a turkey hunt, but a friend and I have been talking about doing an archery turkey hunt at some point.
-
I've taken a few birds with my bow (a few from my tree stand while deer hunting) and others from a blind in the spring. A blind is the way to go for spring birds. They are not shy of it at all. I had a hen poke her head in the window on one occasion. Setting up a blind is fairly easy, but starts to be a pain when you are dragging the blind, chair, decoys etc.. I found it best to put it up the night before, if your able, and be ready for fly down. Another is afternoon hunts and “blind” calling. Finding birds and “quick set ups” with a blind can get frustrating quickly. I have not tried other methods of archery turkey without a blind yet.
-
Yeah its nice if you have private land to set your blinds up on ... but as far as using one on state land well I can not afford to waste time on hoping someone does not walk in on me and my set up ... I have killed 3 with my bow ... But I was alone everytime ... do not need someone sitting beside me and messing things up .... But I love my shotgun just because I love to run and gun and cover lots of ground ... their is nothen cooler than walking out a ridge and cutting and all the sudden one goes off on ya and he is below ya and you call him up to you and as soon as his head pops into view YOU RIP HIS HEAD OFF with a load of Winchester #5s ..... flap flap flap .... Love it :yeah: :dunno:

It's actually kinda exciting, like B&E

I was working a tom last year for about 30 minutes. He was coming in slow when 2 guys and a girlfriend came walking in on me. I waved them off and they then snuck around and cut my tom off. I heard one shot and I assumed they got the bird I was working. My dad came in and kept me from confronting them. I walked about a mile further down and called in two toms about 30 minutes later for me and my dad.
I'm more than happy to help new people out, but sure wish some of the new people would read a little and learn the rules and etiquette of turkey hunting.
Yeah its BS. I can go on forever with all my mishaps over the years ... one in particular which was off the chart was we had had a couple gobblers going off at first light and they were above us and we were set up in a field below them ,, knew our chances were great in bagging up ... they are just going off at mt soft tree yelps and all the sudden BOOM BOOM BOOM ...WTF !!!! I hear the birds take flieght and coming right over our heads and then one just folds up like a rock fallen from the sky .... SPLAT !! Hits the dirt .... then out of nowhere comes a guy running down the hill and comes right by us ... I jump up and ya I seriouisly chewed some arz..... I was on private land and I let him know how I felt about blowing birds off the limb..... Just does not go good with me !!!!!!! I let him get his bird and the funny thing was we let it rest for 2 days went back in there and killed one that morning anyway ...... Thats why I can not stress enough to never give up ,,,,ever....you just never know to ya go !
