has anyone ever sawn their shotgun barrel down? I just got a 12 guage from my dad that has a bulge in the barrel and I want to cut it down. Just wondering if anyone has ever done this or have any tips
-
I'm doing it to a gun, a friend gave me one with a bulge just gotta find the time to do it
-
My tip is be absolutely POSITIVE that when it is finished it measures greater than 18"
-
Yeah I think there is certain laws to be followed and I would look into that.

where is this measurement done from, the tip of the barrel to what the flat portion where the firing pin would penetrate?
-
Measured from the boltface, and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe its 18 1/2".
-
federal is 18. Manufacturers make it 18 1/2 just to not cut it close.

Close the bolt and drop a dowel in the bore.....don't get greedy, the feds are not into playing.

I did it to a 20ga shotgun, cut about 3 inches when some jackwad tried to shoot the gun with a glob of mud in the end of the barrell (wasn't me)
anyways, it shoots really really bad. The pattern is terrible, not even somewhat round but it makes a big oblong pattern with gobs of strays.
buy a new barrel

the gun isn't worth much, I don't want to waste the money on it, It's pretty much going to be an under the mattress gun

:yeah: I'm sure the pattern will be good enough to deter someone from coming down my hallway. :chuckle:

Pretty simple operation; measure, make sure it is at least 18” from the bolt face to the end of the barrel. Chock it in a vise and cut it off with a hacksaw. True up the end with a flat *censored* file. De-burr with emery cloth.
I’ve done a few and have even hunted with a sawed off. Nothing like shooting quail with a sawed off and 1 ½ oz of #8. Kind of a neighborhood load, you just need to get the muzzle in the neighborhood.

As high country stated. drop a dowel down the barrel on a closed action and measure 18 and half inches or better 19 inches from the chamber
