Title: H-4831SC
Post by: elkslayer069 on January 30, 2012, 06:34:21 PM
Having problem with not having enough room in the case for the powder with the Barnes TTSX bullets with them being all copper bullets their longer to get up to weight and was wondering how the short cut lays in the case compared to regular long cut 4831.

As long as it's not major "crush", I wouldn't worry about it.  If the lack of air space around the granules worries you, don't let it--powders carry their own oxygen for burning.  The big advantage to the short cut powders is that they meter better in the powder measures.

I have that problem when loading that power as well. I love 4831 and 4831sc and load it in most my guns from 25 and up.

Go to a faster burning powder like H4350.

Well Im right to the point of being afraid of blowing out a shoulder on the case. I know that the less space the better. I have friend who has 2 or 3 pounds of the short cut and we were just going to trade if I can more in the case. Just trying to save some cash before buying a different powder. Thanks for your input guys.

You big bore guys got it made--try loading IMR 4198 in a .22 hornet case.  Or a .17 fireball.  Good news:  It's the powder that gives the best accuracy in small calibers.  Bad news: The long grains make metering small charges a PITA!

It might help if you could tell us what the cartridge is.   :dunno:

Hahaha! Try seating a .458 CEB 370gr Non Con on top of a 106grs of Win 748 in a Ultra Mag case. Doesn't matter how hard you crank on that handle they want to pop back up. Gives a guy a serious complex for the first round at the bench, it just doesn't feel right. :o

Smokeless Short Magnum Rifle

With Reloder 17 reloaders have a powder that meters easy and consistently while providing maximum velocity even in extreme weather. This consistent performance is what reloaders have come to expect from Alliant Powder - and Reloder 17 proves worthy.
•Designed for short magnum case capacity
•Similar burn speed to IMR 4350
•Meters easily and consistently
•Consistent maximum velocity in extreme weather conditions

Last spring I developed a new load for my .300 for my Wyoming elk hunt. I found that in my case the bullet (165 gr. Barnes TTSX) performed much better with the IMR4350 than with the IMR4831. Even though IMR4831 was considered the most accurate.  :twocents:

I know you were trying to save money by using what you have, but I have no experience with the SC powders so the above is all I can offer for advice.

I do know one thing, I shot 3 rounds into a bucket of sand to check expansion and weight retention. WOW is all I can say. The bullets opened nicely and the average weight retention was 98%!!! One shot in Wyoming through the lungs and the bull only went 40 yards before going down for good. I still have the bullets and can take pics if anyone is interested.

Another vote for going to a faster burning powder Like IMR-4831. I,ve found that to work well with long bullets like accubonds and ballistic tips. For two of my rifles which have long magizines and long throats I love a full case of H-4831 or the sc version. For situations where you cannot fill the case to around the bottom neck and still seat a long bullet deep enough to fit the mag without over compression then I switch to a faster powder. When I seat a bullet and hear crunch, crunch, crunch I switch powder. If I get only  one crunch and the bullet is home I,m calling that good to go. I really love slightly compressed loads for the best accuracy most of time. Not always.  :twocents: :twocents: :twocents: :twocents:

I run the 4831 and 4831sc in a lot of guns. I am starting to load more and more of my guns with the imr 4350.

Not opposed to changing powders but like i said im getting the crunch so I'll have to pick up some 4350 and try the SC this weekend and see what happens. Keep ya posted

I,ve used a ton of IMR 4350. It,s good stuff too, especially when you need a little room for long bullets. Definitly worth appropriate evaluation. Another   :twocents: or less

Yeah in one of my 270wsm's I use the 4831sc and get the crunch, even though I don't load anything close to max. My other one I run the imr 4350 and have been very happy with it.

Excellent info. Last time I used 4350 in a 338 I got excellent accuracy.

I just checked my records. 71.5 grains gave me 2800 with a 225 grain speer bullet. That was a max load from Nosler manual 5. I don,t know alot about the 338 but it appears 2800 is ball park decent.

That might be a good reason to use a different bullet.  There are plenty of non-copper premium bullets out there.

I love H4831 SC. You could try using a 6" drop tube when charging the case. Also, try gently tapping the case as you drop the powder in. It will help to "settle" the powder and make it pack a little tighter.

When in doubt though, try a slightly faster powder. For me, if H4831 doesn't work I try H4350 or Re17.

Drop tubes make a big difference... and I think you meant RL-17
