Title: Archery Shops
Post by: Muleyslyr on March 23, 2007, 10:36:26 AM
Was just kinda curious were your guys' local Archery shops are.  The shop I go to the most is The Knock Point in Mt. Lake Terrace.  Pretty good little shop.  Got or will get ya anything you need.

Although I did buy my bow a coupla' years ago from Rainier Archery in Puyallup.  Also a decent shop, just too dang far for me to go.  ;)

So where do you guys go??

I get nearly all my bow, arrows and advice from Pacific Yew. If they don't have what I need I'll shop around here in Spokane for something.

I go to Kodiak archery in Otis Orchards, a new shop that is Friendlyand helpful.  Don't care how I am treated in the other shops in Spokane.  Waiting for Cabela's to open in Post Falls this next fall. :dunno:

Not much choice here in Yakima these days.  Grizzly archery is one that I have shopped at a bit.  I often make the travel down to the Sportsmans wharehouse in Tri-Cities.  I've been dieing to check out a Cabelas, so can't wait for the one to open in PostFalls.  I haven't quite mustered the roadtrip thing for Boise.  I'm interested in checking out Ole' Pacific Yew sometime when I am in the neighborhood.  I remember the old shop.  As for Spokane, I wasn't real impressed there either.  I went to one out on Sprague next to Orvis, and they treated me like I was last years garbage.

I haven't seen a archery shop in Deer Park but then it might be hidden on some by way.
Do you know who owns the shop on 395 with the LARGE arrows stuck in the ground.(telephone poles from the looks of them) I have to stop there some day.

I go to Kalispell every year in July. I always have my BOW tuned and any necessary changes from Spirit Qwest Archery. I found that when they are done my bow never has any issues.

If I go to a pro shop I go Yakima and AS&J archery, other than that I order from Cabelas, or go to Sportsmans Warehouse

I get most of my stuff from Grizzly in Yakima.  AS&J is a good shop, I just prefer Bowtech stuff over Mathews and Hoyt.  Honestly though, I buy a good portion of my gear online through Archery Talk.  No sense in paying full retail for arrows and other gear you can get cheaper.

We've got several to choose from here in Spokane.

Kodiak Archery, which has already been mentioned. Tony is a fantastic guy to deal with. His prices are reasonable and the staff is very knowledgable.

SVA (Spokane Valley Archery) is probably my least favorite shop. Unless you're in there dropping a grand, the employees don't care to give you the time of day.

We've also go the shop in Sportsman's Warehouse, where I currently work. Despite claims that chain stores don't employ knowledgable staff, well, whatever. ;)

Bear, I wouldn't cross your fingers for any kind of realy archery techs at Cabelas. Its our understanding that they will in fact have an archery department, but they won't have a range or a service area for archery equipment. They can sell you the bows, put your accessories on them, cut your arrows, but they won't be able to paper tune your bow when you buy it or do any real tuning up.

Good archery shops, just like good gun shops, are a treasure. When you find one, try hard to support them.

At the moment here on the east side of King County, that is Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah, Snoqualmie, etc., even with all of the sportsmen living here, we have no archery shops. And we've just lost one of our best area gun shops to the DOT for a traffic circle.

East King Co. has a good economy, with lots of folks with good incomes, but also relatively high taxes and and cost of living. If any of you souls out there have the desire to open a fine general archery shop or gun shop, check out East King County. There's a big vacancy.

No, Northwest Archery closed it's doors in April 2005. My sister Suzanne now operates an online wood arrow business, Northwest Archery LLC.

Speaking of.....do you offer any videos or how to information, or know of any... about making your own arrows.  I am just diving into flint knapping, and would love to create some of my own arrows and was about to start looking for something like that.  I've seen some of "you guys's" creations and thought they were awesome.  I almost bought one for display, but ran out of spending cash at the time.

Can you tell us a little more about them? What are their hours?
I think one of the co-owners is the son of an old friend.

When I tried out bow hunting for a couple of years I had good luck at the Archery House, just outside of Chehalis.

You should definitely check out the Archery House then. They were very helpful for me, and didn't try to push me into buying anything from them. I ended up buying a bow off ebay, as I was on a very tight budget at the time, but I did take it into them and had them adjust the draw length for me, and also had them install a Trophy Taker drop away rest, which BTW, I highly recommend.

It has been a few years since I've been there and I think they may have moved. Doing an internet search I'm coming up with them being at Yard Birds, and in another location on Keasling Road outside of Chehalis. They were on Jackson Highway when I was going there. So now I'm unsure of where they are, or if they have more than one location.  :dunno:

theres a new archery shop in Chehalis WA called Lost Creek archery I think, it has up to a 30 yard in door shooting range and up to 80 yards outside, it is really nice, best one I have seen. Although there is one other one in town, that is good also no shooting range there

I think whatever shop, store, or website, a person chooses to find their archery equipment, they should understand what they are getting, its hilarious when people say that pro shops are charging too much (like spokane valley archers, who I think are great), and would rather go to a box store that has bronze statues that cost more than most little proshops inventory, then bring their equipment to that little shop and pay whatever it takes to set that equipment set up properly. :dunno: ANYWAY!!

I try to avoid bow shops.  No one wants to take the time to set the bow up right any more.  I've tried most shops around western washington.  None will take the time to set up a bow.  Just get it to shoot a bullet hole through paper(usually with their arrow)  then send you down the road.

I will let only one guy touch my bow.  That's KC at the sportsmans in federal way.  That kid is good.  I don't know how he is with people that aren't real savy in archery, but he sure did good by me and my buddies.  I live up by mt rainier.  So I have to drive a long ways to get to his store.  Obviously I drive by several other shops along the way that won't get my business.

The only shop that I haven't tried that I might is Dougs shop on shaw road.  I work with his shop techs son.  I might give him a shot.  Being much closer.  It would be nice to have a back up plan.  I have talked with Jamie from Olympic and he sounds like he would be a good guy to let work on a bow.  I personally haven't been there, but one buddy bought a bow there last year and his work looked pretty good.  His bow shoots great as well.

I'm not going to say that some of the other shops around the area could of hired a guy that cares about the customer, but I just haven't seen it yet.

If you guys run across a shop that is worth a darn.  Please share.

Just saw the Cabela's being reported on the news here in Spokane and they said they plan to open November 9th and one part of the coverage was about their indoor range and shop.

Isn't there a shop down around Des Moines... maybe on Pacific Highway,  that has a good reputation?  Don't even know if it's there anymore.

There's a shop near Spokane (in Deer Park) that supposed to be pretty good.  I for the life of me can't remember the name.  I have some buddies who live on the N. side of Spokane that swear by the place though.

While there is some truth to this I also know that the some of the best bow hunters in Spokane and N. Idaho think very highly of these guys.  If you're a total neophyte going in there in mid August and wan to shoot the *censored* about all the bows under 300 bucks they probably are going to be less than welcoming.   However, what they lack in personal care they generally make of for in expertise, selection, services offered, and amenities.... like an indoor range, outdoor range, and full 3D course.

I've tried several bow shops over the years and finding one that really puts some effort into quality workman ship has been tough. I finally took it into my own hands, I bought a press and did a ton of reading.  It really isn't to tough to do your own work and you know what your going to get.  It also adds another aspect to the sport.  I will never go back to a shop for work again. I would recommend you give it a shot, it is kind of rewarding when you do all your own work and seal the deal during huning season.

I do however miss the BS sessions at the local shops but when it comes to quality work most of my experience with the owners has been just that BS.

I go to riverside archery in mount vernon.

Gary and his wife at Riverside Archery are Fantastic People! I highly respect them and I send a lot of people to them!  :rockin:

Most of my equipment comes directly from Manufacturers. :) I field test for quite a few companies. :) I have my own archery shop in my yard that is fully equipped to work on virtually any bow made, including crossbows.  :o
