Title: Best .223 round for coyote hunting?
Post by: Doublelunger on February 03, 2012, 12:33:34 AM: I recently bought a Rock River Arms LAR-15 Coyote Carbine. I was wondering what the best round for laying down some coyote's might be. There are a million different rounds out there and I don't know where to start. Any suggestions would help.

Post by: predatorpro on February 03, 2012, 03:54:28 AM: i have always been a big fan of noslers ballistic tips for 22 caliber rifles, i shoot a 50 grain nosler in my 22-250 and one of my friends shoots a 40 gr out of his 223 and its deadly accurate in the 1:9 twist, i have shot the hornady vmax and sierras but went straight back to the nosler!

Post by: Wanttohuntmore on February 03, 2012, 05:00:49 AM: I've used 40gr vmax with mixed results, now using 52gr hollowpoints but haven't had any "recipients" yet. Am really thinking about using the 65gr Sierra gamekings.... That would probably fly pretty darn good in the wind, and have some energy out there a ways.

vmax in 1-9turn twist AR and they work great.

Hands down for dead right there, Nosler ballistic tips are all I use.

Was the first day I shot my ar just sighted in and was messing around and decided to.take a drive.

Post by: Doublelunger on February 03, 2012, 11:05:44 AM: thanks for the suggestions guys. My gun has a 20" barrel with a 1:9 twist. I've just got a 3x9 on it right now and its sighted in with 55 grain cheap stuff (mostly federal). I plan on putting the 12 power Nikon M-223 scope on it soon. So i guess I'm looking to get out to 300 yards hopefully. Ive always had good luck with the Hornady in other calibers, so maybe I'll lean that direction. The Nossler is sounded petty good too. Im still open for suggestions though....Thanks again.

Load one and stick with it,unless you want to shoot camp Perry. As far as Coyotes are concerned think shot placement. Save a lot of aspirin.

I think 60gr is a good compromise between varmint weight and ability to buck some wind.
It's still a .223.

Post by: hillbilli on February 03, 2012, 06:06:04 PM: most have my coyotes have been killed with .308, so i dont have as much experience with the .223 in the hunting woods. I would say any of the sp or hp rounds, or ballistic tip would work.. based on what I've seen with the issue fmj rounds, I wouldnt use them unless you are shooting up close. past 200yds they tend to produce a neat clean .22 hole..

Post by: AWS on February 04, 2012, 07:00:35 PM: In the 223 I like the 50gr NBT, in the 22-204 the 40gr NBT at 3900fps seems to drop them on the spot with no pelt damage and the 22-250 and 5.6x50R Mag I go with the Speer 52gr Flatebase HP. I find that the lighter V-Max have a tendency to splash at higher speeds. Most of my coyote hunting is for pelts so damage is as important to me as DRT.
