Title: What to wear in Sept?
Post by: Antlershed on July 23, 2008, 12:26:52 PM
I thought there was a discussion about this before but I couldn't find it. So, what are you guys wearing for the early archery season? I have some Rivers West stuff, but I'm not going to wear it in September. I realize that it could be cold, hot, raining, or just about anything else over here on the westside, but what is some lighter clothing that works well for you?

I'm usually cold in the early morning.  I have a RW jacket that I wore some times because I stay still for hours.  In the afternoon, heat gear for top and regular 6 pocket pant.

I take clothes for any type of weather, but I usually go with long sleve T and cotton six-pocket pants. If it's questionable, I'll go to my Revolution Fleece pant's and a Micro-tex button shirt. Always carry a light weight rain parka in the backback.

I usually use some under armor with micro tex pants from cabelas. Polyester shirts or pants seem to work well, I think it is blended with different material. I also bring a light weight jacket or vest along. No need for rain gear for me, being that I hunt the eastside, but I am assuming you will be hunting the westside. I tried a pair of rivers west pants and would never use them again for a early or late hunt. They are way to warm for me. Just get some clothing that breathes well and wicks sweat away from you body.

Since it is usally 80 plus degrees on opening day in Maryland I wear light weight camo, but I always have my raingear in the truck just in case.

pair of well worn brown carhartts, long sleeve cotton shirt. camo or no camo makes no diff to me. in sept on the wetside,, rain isnt too much of a bother to me, if it happens.. id rather get soaked and stay cool, then swelter inside of a rain coat.. no matter what season, always keep a columbia wool jacket in my badlands

I wear standard denium top and bottoms camo of course, but I bring a warm pullover cause in the morning its cold.  I hike in with just my t-shirt and pants of course, then when I get settle in and stop sweating I put the warmer stuff on.  As the day warms up, I take off whats necessary.

i wear a set of columbia mesh camo pant and button shirt. usually a tshirt or tank under the button shirt and just plain boxers under the pants. i can be a little chilly in the mornings but by midmorning its very nice and if there is a breeze its really nice. and the breeze takes care of sweat nicely too as the mesh breathes really nice.

How do you guys like that Micro-tex in the warm weather and do you have the Mico-tex lite or just the regular? I've been looking at getting that stuff, just wasn't too sure about it. Thanks.

I think the only time I will wear my RW stuff is if I am going to sit in a stand all day when it is cold.

Where I hunt (east side) it is 32 degrees at first light and 75 degrees by 3 pm, so needless to say I layer. I start with good long johns, sweat pants, cotton hunting pants (quiet), Top is long sleeve hunting shirt, sweat shirt, light jacket. Then I take clothes off all day, by 3 pm my pack is full. No fancy clothes, just functional. Non are scent free, I looked at those at sportsmans & shirt / pants were over $100 each. Crazy.

LOVE the Micro-tex, but it is warm. Haven't tried the 'lite' version yet but will chaeck them out next time I hit Cabela's.  Very comfy, strong, quiet and fade resistant stuff.

Layers. Always poly/synthetic or nylon, no cotton.

Duh.., Sept hunts can range from smokin hot to down right cold. I always pack enough layers in my gear to cover just about anything. I am done with cotton, even in warm weather.

Micro-tec works really well!!! I use the six pocket pants and button shirt in Outfitter Camo. I also use Sitka Gear in ASAT Camo. Another Cabelas product I would HIGHLY recommend is Wooltimate with Wind Shear . I have the button Henly(now they make the zippered Henly) I use it as a jacket. I even use it in the late hunt Nov-Dec in WA. I also have the Wooltimate Windsheer Jacket. It is unbelievable how well the Wind Shear works. The Wooltimate is my Go To Gear!!! The only problem with it is it doesn't breath and the Henly doesn't have pockets for your hand's the Jacket does. The Henly fits tight and has a chest pocket (the Jacket also has a chest pocket)for a small range finder. For Archery Hunting it works excellent. Good Luck

I have a mossyoak loin cloth I wear.

No really I have some light weight scent lock clother I wear with a Camo T-Shirt. I will throw on a hooded sweatshirt if its cool in the morning  and throw it in the pack once it warms up. Usually during early season even if it is cool out I wont worry too much about the sweatshirt. Usually hiking anyway so I'm always too warm.

I wear either a bunch of scent blocker clothing in the SLT layers and/or in combination with a bunch of lightweight Under Armour clothing to wick away the moisture and keep me cool.

Dayglow orange banana hammock and matching tube top.  I like to top off the whole ensemble with a nice pair of pink Vans slip-on's with black socks and a bright pink (or purple depending on my mood) fanny pack.

I do cotton  long pants and sleeves over Underarmor boxer briefs and T-shirt.  In the pack are a wool watch cap, wool gloves, a Filson wool vest and Frog Toggs rain suit; less than 5lbs total, and not too bulky.  I also carry enough fire starter to start a fire under ANY conditions.  Most of my hypothermic experiences have been early season, in the morning - not during cold conditions.  I'm not complacent about mild, early season weather.

I definitely do not hunt were some of you guys hunt.  Have yet to see the loin cloth or banana hammock but there is always a first.

Over the years I have learned that the layering is the way to go.  Base layer a synthetic  moisture wicking with preferably a silver thread scent control, and outer layers light weight or fleece depending on temp.  I also go to the extra effort and wash clothes in scent eliminating detergents then store in off season in a plastic bags that you can force the air out and seals with a Ziploc on one end then it has a valve setup on the other end.

Here is a list of clothes I would have with for a multiple day spike camp hunt in wilderness area:
1. Wicking polypro type socks under Smart Wool sock.  Wear one set extra set in pack.
2. One set of silk weight long underwear in pack
3. light weight or as light as possible camo pants, extra pair in pack.
4. Wicking t-shirt with scent control silver thread material, extra t-shirt in pack.
5. Button up type long sleeve camo shirt with silver thread scent control material.
6. Set of breathable camo rain gear.  Used a set of Gander Mountain Guide gear last year seemed to work good.  However, I have not been able find a rain gear that breathes enough for me even gore-tex.
7. Fleece camo vest.
8. Fleece camo stocking cap.
9. camo cap
10. camo gloves.

I tried some of the Cabelas's brand mesh type light weight camo last year and it didn't seem to hold up walking through brush and timber day after day.  One of my hunting partners purchased a pair of the Rocky Atomic Scent IQ ten pocket pants and said they worked great on a late season hunt on the west side.  I am planning on trying those out this year.

As for me, I like Under Armor Heat Gear, and Micro-tex for the rest.   I bring a water resistant fleece for the possible showers.  And gaitors and a light Columbia rain jacket in the pack.  Dont forget the therma rest seat cushion. Keeps me from loosing so much heat to the ground when sitting.

Anytime someone starts talking about their fanny pack,or getting their fanny packed, whatever... all I can think of is the movie Deliverance! Sorry. Thats all I can envision. Can you say "squeal like a pig!?"

I wear Kings camo stuff. Everything matches, I usually start with the vest on and then peel off as needed.
