Title: Getting My First Puppy!
Post by: gallion_t on February 09, 2012, 10:14:07 PM
Well its official. I just reserved my first puppy as an adult. Ive been begging for one for years. no joke my mom still has the letter I wrote to Santa in second grade asking for a puppy. Anyways I just reserved and AKC female black lab from a father that has natural pointing tendency's. Hopefully mine naturally points too.

Having never really trained a dog before i was hoping someone could recommend a good training book or general tips. My main goal is upland hunting along with general obedience. Thanks in advance for the tips.

Great Dogs!!! I grew up with labs and now have have my own 3 year old. We dont hunt her but she is great!!!! We did go though 2 training classes with her when she was a pup, which worked great! But the training classes are all about training you to train your dog!! Good luck! Here is our Lola.

My biggest tip has to be... Make time for your puppy!!! The more time you spend with them the faster and more they learn!

Great dogs. I owned 2 choc. labs and trained them both with a book called Gun Dog. The author looks like einstein.  :chuckle: Get the book, read it and do what it says and you will not be dissappointed.

i have 3 dogs, and you can definately tell which one had the most work put in as a pup, it pays huge dividends later when you invest a lot of time with them as a pup

I bought my first lab for hunting 17 years ago and i wish I had done it sooner. She now is to ld to hunt. Cant hear and bad toe joints but she is still a great dog.

get him out in public all you can and let everyone pet him. He will turn into a real charmer.
Train ten minute s at a time couple times a day.
