just to clear things up i dont ever intend to bait bear! so anyway i was driving home and saw the game warden so i stopped to ask him some questions such as what is considered baiting for bear? do have to shoot a bear on bait for it to be bear baiting ? ii was asking these questions so that i dont get in trouble when i put out deer blocks and apples for deer and elk . he did not answer any of my questions and he seemed rude . he told me just not to put anything out at all !i thought the game warden was supposed to help us ???so any way its a little frustraing . i have been trying to clrify this law with no avail . i was wondering if anybody can help me try to clarify or is the law just not clear.
-

Help? lol
Did you happen to get a name?
-
Sounds like the GW was having a really bad day.
-
Usually when someone gets rude or standoff-ish, it is because they do not know the answer.
-
He probably thought you were trying to find a way around the law. :bash:
-
He sounds like a jerk. He should have been happy to discuss the topic with you and help you out. :bash:
-
i do know his name and so do the guys i hunt with they have been dealing with him for years and i guess he is a real you know what . i wont say his name . evedentally he has been with the department for a long long time and i really dont want to get on his bad side. the thing is i have yet to meet one of these gents that is helpful in any way. maybe one of you all know one that i can talk to .
-
oh and i was very honest with him stating my intents with baiting deer and elk
-
Call the WDFW information line. Ask to talk to somebody about the regs. They have always helped me and been kind. I have not stumped them with a question yet. Just make sure to take their name and the date just in case a warden has an issue with what they told you.

Ask them if it is legal to wear elk cover scent while predator calling for bear. ;)
-
File a complaint on him, and push it.
He is a public servant, and if he can't handle his job....He shouldn't have it-Period.
I have also never had any problems with Fish and Game answering any questions of mine, and know the local Warden in these parts. I've had no problem with any Wardens.

Spoke to a gamey last week and if your legally baiting for one animal and a bear or turkey comes to the bait you cannot shoot it or you are baiting even though it's coincedental.
Also the age old question about scents. It is illegal to use any attractant whether it be food or scent for bear. I have used scents in the past and never thought twice about it. :hunt2: oops!
-
While I hate running into @$$ cops, lets try to give him a little slack. He's out there all alone and may have just dealt with a crowd of drunk hunters. He may have just had to respond to a trespassing call. I don't know what the job is like but I'm guessing it might be difficult from being the tough cowboy ranger we want them to be on the poachers, and then flip a light switch and go back to being officer friendly to us sportsmen. I'm not defending any rudeness on his part, but lets remember that it does take a tough person to be out in the woods when they're job is to confront people who have a gun.
The only encounter I have had with WDFW GWs was when two pulled up in a truck and checked my tags. They were very courteous but part of that may have been due to the fact that they confronted me, not the other way around.

But did you ask about elk scent?

I've always emailed the fish and game department and they've always been very helpful. Good Luck!

His attitude might have been because you were driving by and stopped while he was presumably doing something or just finished. I used to be a cop, and that's a real stressful situation for a cop in the field by himself. He doesn't know what your intentions are. My experience with fish and game cops has always been positive.

yea i sure he was done for the day and on the way home, he prob just wanted to get over with, after working 8 hours i don't wan to talk about work....

Willie,
If Old Spice attracted bears, it would be a crime to shoot a bear that was attracted to it, given the current language of the law.

That is the way I understand it as well, but I have been told both that it was and wasn't legal by F&G so I am always curious as to what the F&G agents have to say.
-
:)I am with Billy and Krusty have been told both. Also I asked about night hunting coyotes and got several answers. I have yet to get a straight answer from a GW in the field or by calling the offices. On the night hunting yotes question I set down and called every office listed in the game hunting rules.
However I have not been treated rudely by any GW, EXCEPT one in the Montesano office.
I read about a case where a Lady Lawyer argued that: a guy cooking in camp could smell like food, a guy camped out for several days could smell and that a woman during her time could put off an odor, she asked are they baiting? the story goes that she won the case, but I do not know that for sure.
I know that I will not use any food source scent, I use cedar, fir tree or something like that, no berries, animal, if I use it at all.

I have always done this as well and they have always been very courteous and have always been able to help me on regulations that I do not understand.

You were in king county? jerk game warden? Im guessing his initials were B.R. But just a guess....lol
-
As a NBEF/WDFW Hunter Ed instructor, I can tell you that if it's NOT explicitly stated as "unlawful" in the regulations, it is presumed legal. All WDFW should be willing to help you get your questions answered. They serve YOU, the public. If they don't know the answer they should do what they can to point you in the right direction to get an answer. I know a few great wildlife enforcement agents who are very helpful and don't assume you are guilty just because you ask a question that might seem too close to the line.
With the growing popularity of trail camera activity these days, the WDFW and other states better be prepared to get the facts before charging a law abiding citizen with a wildlife crime. And the WDFW better get a press release prepared and published about the use of bait with regards to predators and fur-bearing animals. If they aren't proactive about this, then you can't be charged with a crime not clearly stated as such in the WDFW regulations.
Case closed.
-
It's probably just another of the many grey areas that aren't specifically described so there isn't a specific answer. That's not the warders fault. You can go through the regs and find many. It's really frustrating to get several answers. As far as B.R. being a jerk, I have dealt with him many times and although he comes across as gruff he has always been helpful. That's a job I wouldn't want. Imagine the jerks he has to deal with.

guess Im gonna have to lose the bacon earings and bologna thong :yike:

Just having breakfast and interrupted by a bear....
-
You boys better be glad that I didnt see the Thong offer before he retracted it!
Ive got pics of me in a ham thong just for the hell of it ;)

I've read a post from BTKR about the whole sent+calling=bait thing. If anyone gets a definative answer please put up a topic about it. You would think that if there weren't an official stance on defining "bait" that some one would come up with one.
-
Difinitively it's any scent or food put out to attract game. Some of it is cut and dry, and some of it falls in that grey area. I think its up to the courts to decide what is what.

Cut and dry. No food. No scent.
-
...but what if I used my girlfriend's rasberry scented body soap before a hunt?
; )

-
so..we cant hang used maxi pads from tree stands? is that what I am learning here????
-
You shouldn't hang used pads anywhere, for any reason. That's nasty.
-
I could bring my wife hunting its not baiting..or the alternative.......
by the way.... I am sooooooo joking..but funny to me !!!!!
-
I've heard of guys using frozen tampons for attracting deer in MN. It ain't right...on so many levels.

The *censored* owner of rainier archery sells all kinds of bear baits, he told me it was legal to bait up to 72hrs before the season. :dunno:

:chuckle: Yeah, And he'll be the first one to turn you in for points! :yike:
No , Nothing a woman uses nor the woman herself will not attract a wild animal in to shooting range...get your mind out of the gutter, thats so old school!. :chuckle: :chuckle:
