Title: Oak Creek
Post by: Figure8 on February 18, 2012, 09:43:50 AM
So how far West does everyone think that the elk in Oak Creek travel? I'm sure some of those elk come a pretty good distance.

Certainly from the other side of the crest.  They have proven it with certain collared critters.

I saw a collared cow #206 swim across Fryingpan lake with some other elk in late July of 2004 and in January of 2006 saw #206 at Oak Creek. Maybe there are more than one #206 who knows.

I know of a collared bull that was arrowed 25 miles as the crow flys from oke creek. It was the biggest bull coming into the feeding station for 4 years before he met an arrow at 30 yds.

I asked this qestion once to a bio who manages the white river and he told me some have been recorded  to travel to oak creek. One bull a couple years ago was even recorded to have traveled all the way to the columbia via the firing range.

We were at Oak Creek Sunday, a few elk, lots of bulls for the total number of elk in there. There were some dandys! My family and FF4607's went out on the surplus 6x6 for the 30min tour. It was fun! Guess the Sunday before we were there a bull broke a cows neck and killed her. Interesting.

wonder what all the greenies thought of that? better than seeing wolves come in and kill a few in my opinion.

Also heard a comment on late born calves being blamed on Global Warming. This made me laugh and puke burp at the same time. :chuckle: :chuckle: Where were these people raised!?!?

I was there on Sat. I thought they said the wind had elk very skidish and that something spooked them and that the bull killed the cow when they were running away. Trampled over her. Not sure if I heard correctly. I did meet a couple fellow H-W members at the sheep feeding station. Duckdave was one, don't remember other two.

I was there Saturday too about 1 till 3. I also overheard about the cow and I heard they take it outta sight behind the barns and lets the eagles have it. It was very windy and coming over White pass was bad at times with the wind blowing the snow off the burms on the side of the road, complete white out. But atleast 500 elk there and probaly 100 from Packwood to Randle, Also saw 2 cows at the Ohop grange on hwy 7.
