Post by: AKBowman on February 19, 2012, 12:59:13 PM
Anyone do any good out there the last few years? Seems to be a lot of good huntable land, birds should be there I would think.

Cant wait until late April!

Wuts up AKbowman, how'd last years hunting season treat you? I had a buddy out there last year. He didn't get a bird. But came damn close. The Tom was 30yrds out peeking from behind a boulder then vanished. But he said he had birds gobbling.

I know it very well now. Birds are there find them. Hunters are very rude and Federal game wardens walk in on my stands even tho they know me. Three for four over the years. Will carry camera this year. call in several coyotes each year. I had a neighbor last year see a reddish wolf at starvation flats watched it for a while had a collor. Rick

Thats the kind of info I was looking for! Want to make sure they are in that "general" area. Now I put in my work to find a sweet little spot.

Thanks again.

The area can really get better later too.  I know some birds must move into areas later. The NWR is pretty large and many areas in early spring have snow and are at higher elevations.  Looking at maps is key.

We went later last year . May. Never saw another hunter and had birds every day wxcept the two raining ones. They are way spooky by than. but the roads were clear. Went early one year and there was so much snow you could not get around very well. Watch the weather over there and be fexible.

NO birds there, but if you decide to drive through, stop in and say hi, we just like the scenic views....  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Was up there over Memorial Day last year mostly trying to find deer, but if we happened upon a gobbler then blammo.

But, we never saw one. Going back up this Memorial Day and will likely hit it a bit harder this year.

Took my first turkey off the PO - 20 llbs, 8-1/2 in beard, 3/4 spurs.  Was in multiple birds (and hunters) every day. Was my favorite place to hunt until I discovered private land.  Do occassional "visit" for nostalgic purposes ....  :chuckle:
