Governor’s Moose Tag
Donated by:  Washington State

This Moose permit is good for September 1 – December 31, 2012 for use in any GMU open to Moose hunting except those GMU’s that are closed by the Fish & Game commission. Bag Limit is ONE ADDITIONAL ANY BULL MOOSE. You may use any legal weapon of your choice and hunt during any open season within the date and boundary parameters.

BONUS FEATURE:  Bearpaw Outfitters is the most experienced moose hunting guide in Washington. All of Washington's Shiras Moose hunting units are located in Northeast Washington, right where Bearpaw Outfitters have conducted hunts for over 30 years. Past hunters have taken some very nice moose and success is almost always 100% because Bearpaw Outfitters live in the local area, they know the moose areas extremely well, and they are always scouting throughout the year.  Dale Denny has generously offered to guide the buyer of the Governor’s Moose Tag free of charge. Buyer is not obligated to use Bearpaw’s professional guide services.

Thats totally cool Dale... thank you! It ought to bring the tag price up a bit. Any guesses as to what it will go for?? If the muley tag went for $25K... will this get more? It should in my opinion...

Question though... are you "donating" a 7 day hunt? Or "help" all season long? If I (which I wont) bought this tag for big money, say 25k plus, I'd be holding out for the biggest dam shiras moose possible...he'd HAVE to go 160+.... ok...well, he wouldnt "have to" if he had a certain look... but that "look" would probably get him over 160!

Last year we had Jim Shockey at the Spokane SCI Banquet. It was the best banquet I have ever been to. The Shockey's are as nice of people as you will ever meet in the industry and he puts on an outstanding presentation.

If you ever wanted to attend an SCI Banquet, go to this one on Feb 25th:  http://www.scinw.com/2012banquet.html

How mucb could one expect to pay for that hunt? 100$ to maybe 500$.

It's hard to say what it will bring but I expect over $10,000. I have heard of it bringing less than $10,000 a few years back so with this economy maybe someone will get a real good deal. I heard the whitetail tag only brought about $3500, that was a steal for that tag.

There were some dandy moose seen last fall that I think are still around. Alwine had a monster moose spotted, so did Archery Outfitters, and when we were moose hunting we saw 3 bulls that I am sure were book moose, we had chances at two of them but couldn't quite close the deal, the third jumped in the road on our way out after we had already killed a moose an hour earlier, he was right in front of my rig, all I can say is that he was enormous, probably 11 or 12 pts per side and 55ish wide, looked like an alaskan moose....  :yike:

I'm guessing the upper teens: $15K to $20K.  The goat permit auctions for around $8K to $10K, and a moose is more desirable in my opinion.

$10,000 is not that bad for a Gov goat tag. How much would it cost to hunt Canada or Alaska ( plus travel cost and tags) for a 7 day hunt?

Wish I had money for a Gov moose tag. I tagged along in a moose hunt a couple years ago and it was awesome. Something special when hunting moose during the rut and the bulls would rather kick your a$$ then run away from you.

All the hunts that went last weekend where good deals I thought  :dunno:

Friday night they pretty much had to give away hunts, seems like most things went at half price. BC Mule deer hunt for like 1200, trip to South Africa 800 etc.....

Many of the hunts that went for low prices had hidden costs: "must bring a full-price paying second hunter", "does not include trophy fees, air transport, etc. etc."

I sensed that the crowd was on to those tricks pretty well this year.

Yeah I agree with your point, but the ones I used as examples had no "hidden costs".

The trip they couldnt even give away was the one to Spain....it had a trophey fee of 8500 :yike:

That's the nature of hunts in Spain.  They can be spendy in more ways than one.  You've got to look REALLY close at the details of a Spain hunt "donation".

I can't begin to tell you how many donations receive from around the world that look interesting until you get to the fine print.  It is an unenviable task weeding through hundreds to try to come up with a few good hunt donations that will make the chapter money, and more importantly, make the paying membership happy.

We've come up with some really nice hunts for our this year's live auction.  Bring your checkbook!

If you were looking for a hunt in Spain, that one was a great deal.  The $8300 trophy fee is the same as any of the other Spanish outfitters are charging for Beceite Ibex.  The donation covered the daily fees for the guide plus lodging for the hunter and a guest.  For overseas hunts it is typical to see daily fees plus trophy fees because you can shoot more than one animal on the hunt.

I am always shocked by what people pay for those sheep tags.

The hunter must pay the Trophy Fees for a minimum of two trophies.  The hunt can be extended beyond 5 days and extra species.

INCLUDED: All meals, accommodations and transportation to, from and during the hunt; Professional hunter services, trophy field preparation and shipping to local taxidermist, drinks, hotels during the hunt, etc.

NOT INCLUDED: Trophy fees, hotels and meals in Madrid, License and Insurance at $250 per hunting area, Taxidermy and Shipping Costs, VET Certificate and Export Permit at $150 per trophy, VAT Tax of 18% on final invoice. Right: the "$1000" Spanish hunt ends up $15K to $20K by the time you pay trophy fees, permit fees, airfare, some lodging, tips, VAT, etc. Not that it's necessarily a bad deal.  It's just that when you consider the full cost, it's not a $1000 hunt.

One of the S.A. outfitters had a hunt last year that auctioned for $2000.  It included six animals.  The same hunt this year included "$500 towards trophy fees".  The cost of trophy fees for the six animals that were included in the 2011 package would come to $4900.  In other words, to get the same hunt in 2012 would cost $4400 plus whatever auction price you paid.

Wrong.  To many of us that is very true, but there are also many that have the money and don't have/want  the time to research and do it on their own that happily pay to have a whitetail hunt lined up.  Not my approach, but others see it differently. :twocents:

Don't you get until Dec 31 with any weapon? Those last 45 days in any unit with any weapon for whitetail would be killer. :twocents:

Here's a pretty nice moose we missed at 175 yards in the last couple days of the 2011 season, the hunter ended up shooting a bull on the last day that was smaller than a dozen others we had passed during the hunt but still was very happy. Occasionally misses happen, just part of hunting.

Sorry for the poor photo, it's through a spotter at long range and then cropped.

I would love to have that tag and if the economy gets going again, I may try to bid on it someday.

I expect it will go for 12,000 to 15,000, unless there are a couple guys who really want it, then it might bring 15,000 to 20,000.

It all depends like said. People with a lot of money getting into a bidding war can really drive the price up. Most of those people are not affected like the avg joe. We will all know soon enough. I know the goat tag will not sell for less then 7k without someones name on it 8)

Right but you can also get a world class elk hunt for $20k and yet the gov elk tag brings $50k so there must be other motivators.

16k? I think thats a good amount of money. Like mentioned, you can get a hell of a good guided hunt in Alaska or Yukon for that, and probably throw in a couple other animals too (caribou, wolf, wolverine...etc.) Personally, I'd rather have the WA tag than the guided AK hunt, but there are some that would go the other way for sure. Having the whole season to kill a WA shiras would be

If this economy ever turns around before wolves impact our moose too heavily, we will see 20,000+ for this tag, there are some reallly good moose in the NE.

With wolves hitting UT, WY, MT, and ID moose pretty hard, WA currrently has some of the best Shiras moose hunting left.  When you consider that the governor's elk tag can easily go for $50K, $20K to have a shot at a record book moose is a pretty good bargain.

It was well under 20 and you should get a shot at a book bull for sure.

A book bull should be no problem with just about any moose tag if you possess a little self control and put some effort into it.    Its probably the easiest book animal to get in this state.   That being said, there are some real giants out there as well.

I would take that tag anyday. Not sure I would be able to do the tag justice. No way I would be able to spend the time in the field to make it worth it. I would take the moose tag over the sheep tag. Plus it's cheeper.  :chuckle:

Good luck to whoever bought it.

You can but a land owner tag in CO for a lot less than what our tag goes for.  CO has bigger moose than we do to.
