Apparently the governor goat tag holder is a manner of Hunt-WA. I would be more than happy to help you out with the hunt an with spotting goats. Send me a PM if interested. It's always good to have a pair of eyes helping you scout!
-
already working on that shane!

Great offer, hope its still there when I draw my goat tag this year, lol.
-
Ridge, that picture of you? ya'll already got a sheep. Dang. Get in line behind us old guys still trying to draw our first oil tag :yike: Besides, I got stuff on Shane and I can blackmail him into helping me.

.
Yeah, but I'll help out for free! :)
-
I'll help any other tag holder as much as possible as long as none of my hunting buddies myself aren't holding the same tag.
I do have a dedicated governors tag savings account that is growing. It's going to be me with the tag some time soon!

i wish the best for you man .... I would love to shoot a goat but it is not at the top of my list...... Obviously you know where the goats are :yeah: how did you find out he was on HW ?
-
There is another thread about the moose tag that has the info in it.
-
It was exciting sitting next to the guy while he bid his last bid to the limit he had imposed. One more bid and he was going sheep hunting in Alaska!
-
A governor goat tag would top a sheep hunt in Ak for me anyday!
-
One thing I know is he's gonna have a blast!
-
Even better if he can make the book.
-
One thing I know is he's gonna have a blast!
I sure hope he knows the difference between a Nanny & a Billy. 8) :chuckle:
-
The guy only road hunts so he'll never get out of the truck. :chuckle:
-
Wonder if he knows any good taxidermists ? :chuckle: :chuckle:
-

Yeah. A lot of guys really need to get educated before they go goat hunting for the first time. That's why this guy needs to get in touch with me. I have a bunch of PowerPoint presentations that can go along with the WDFW VHs that tag holders receive to really quiz your knowledge. :chuckle:
-
Wow. I did some detective work and think i figured it out :chuckle:
Congrats to him. Hope we hear the storys.
-
He is definately quite accomplished, capable and will do very well with this tag...
-
So who got the tag ??
-
I think he should just "out" himself and start a thread of the whole experience up to the kill. No way i'm "outing" him though.
-

How much is a "governors" tag?

I second that motion. :chuckle:
-
How much is a "governors" tag?
It's an auction tag, so it all depends on the bidder. Historically it has ranged from $6500 to $13000. I think this year it went for $10k.
-
I heard it went for $5000 this year...
-
I heard it went for $5000 this year...
$5000 would be a steal for that tag!!!!

I sure hope he knows the difference between a Nanny & a Billy. 8) :chuckle:
Do you think he cares? lol Bet it gets mounted either way. :IBCOOL:
-
5k for a Gov tag is a STEAL! how in the hell did it go that low? :o I call BS!
-
What a great tag to have regardless of what was paid for it.
-
You guys kill me with the drama :chuckle: :chuckle: I am sure he is loving every minute of it :dunno: :chuckle: lets all guess what he paid then we can have a winner drawing ....
I start out at about 13 grand !!! ;)
-
$10,100
-
It has already been said by one of the guys that puts on the show that it went for right at 10k. So whats up with all the guesses?
-
Gotta keep her live Carp .... :chuckle:
-
No got to keep it REAL  The tag was bought for right at 10k end of story. Some of you guys know all the details but the purchase price was still right at 10k
-
The tag sold for $10k. That is a fact. The phone bidder must have had a max limit of $10k and stopped bidding when it reached that point.
-
All I know is if I could by the tag my limit would be $5000, just saying :dunno:
-
So actually I bought the tag for $10,500 . Cant wait for the hunt to start!!Gona wait till December 26th to start hunting as thats when they have the longest hair :chuckle:

You little...lucky puke!
Two quality bull tags in a couple of years and now this? You must be overcharging!
-
Good call Charlie. 4 days oughta be enough time. That would be one helluva cape. I had heard that it was Doyle Moss that bought the tag on behalf of one of his high end clients. Must know of a big billly lurking somewhere. :chuckle:
-
Doyle's high end client was me.
What can I say.
-
Its getting awful deep in here! I think i'm gona drown! Will the real Slim Shady Please stand up? Ya i'm talking to you! :o

This thread is hilarious!
It's all this "rich man" stigma when it comes to Governor's tags that keep stories and buyers from posting on this forum. The reality is that with the governor goat tag, it is actually relatively affordable when you compare it to going on a guided goat hunt when you add in transportation costs, tag fees, etc. Plus, all the proceeds go directly to mountain goat conservation in the state. Personally I'd buy a governor goat tag over a guided goat hunt any day!
There certainly isn't any reason for the tag holder to be ashamed of having this tag. Anyone who gives I'm crap can eat their own...
:yeah: ;)

You are exactly right, we need to get past this :crap: so people will post their trophy hunting stories and photos. I was thinking of starting another group just for the hunters who want to show off their trophies without getting bashed by the jealous narrow minded ?. Anyone bashes and they are out of the group, that would make for a much more enjoyable environment.
-
I agree that is why some don't post, but how do you define bashing? Telling the truth is often considered bashing.
-

I guess you simply have to trust in someone to make that call or you do it as a group.
-
If your mother or granny killed their trophy, what would you respond to them if it wasnt a trophy in your eyes? If your honesty would come full out and you would tell them, their trophy sucks, is to small, they shouldnt have shot it, dont even sign up to be apart of the group. It's really not that freaking hard to say nice things.

That is not what I am saying and for the record I am just trying to pose a question.
What if something unethical happened during the hunt and a member decides to "out" the issue? Is it considered bashing to tell the truth?
-
They hunt their way, you hunt yours, If its within the law keep ethics to yourself. I'm sure your ethics are different than everyone else. Its a trophy photo room. If its in that room dont comment if you feel you are going to 'bash', if its in the general forum, comment all you want.
-
There is a difference between bashing and telling the truth. If somebosy posts an elk pix and says it scores 400, and it is clearly not and gets called out, that is not bashing and I hope we dont ban that type of discussion.
-

I firmly disagree. If you feel it is ok(not specifying you, 92xj...just saying) to put down, downplay, belittle, etc a guy's trophy whether it is a 400" bull or a 200" bull, or put down, downplay, belittle, etc a guy's hunt....whether he hiked 10 miles from the road or 10 feet from the road to kill his trophy, then a guy should keep his piehole shut and not comment on it whereever it is posted. As long as the hunter's trophy is aquired via legal, ethical means, then I don't feel it is right for anyone to belittle anyone's trophy or hunt. I hear a lot about these hunts that don't get posted on here. It's a shame they don't post pics and stories because there's some dang cool stuff that would be on here for everyone to see but because of the smack talking thats happened in the past, the guys don't post anything.
I personally am flat amazed that Dan Agnew's bulls end up on here year after year with all the chit talking he sees on here, but I am glad they do because they are incredible animals and that man has done a TON for wildlife conservation across the west. I think we should thank the guy and others like him. That or come up with another way to generate all the money that comes from these auction tags and governors tags. Maybe we should raise the prices on licenses or special permits or something like that...
I know some incredible animals that got killed in Washington last year, and in other states. It's too bad the hunters didn't share the stories but I can't blame them. Hopefully we can get past that crap talk at some point and maybe some of these folks will come back and share. Maybe we'll hear who has this goat tag and maybe we won't.
-
Well I have grown or changed quite a bit in regards to this topic in the last couple years. I was 100% dead set against these tags from the beginning. I had all sorts of reasons or beliefs. Quoted in Eastmans about what I really thought about them. Then mostly do to hearing other peoples thoughts on it or getting input that I wasn't generally unaware of, met some folks involved, I have changed my thought process. Grew up a little so to speak. Maybe the rest of Huntwa has as well.
I am with Bob though and probably haven't quite matured in regards to people that over exaggerate. I do like to keep it real. Thats probably a character flaw.
There is a lot of hype with these tags. WIth that comes a lot of the negative, but an aweful lot of positive as well.
-
Jackelope pretty much nailed it...
If I had the governor tag I probably wouldn't want to post on here because of those individuals who insist on bashing. A good example of bashing is when the "holier than thou" guys start slamming somebody for having the money to buy a governor tag or for not hunting exactly by the methods they feel are a "Real Hunter's" methods. I would like to see these "holier than thou" guys when they are 80 or if they get some degenerative disease, and then bash them for their "unsportsmanlike" hunting methods. ;)
Sometimes we need to look beyond our own personnal standards and realize that other people may like to do things differently. As long as people are not breaking the law, more power to them.
When I mention a board for "no bashing" I am thinking of a place free from the derogitory and inflammatory comments on this forum by those who cannot see past their own self-rightousness.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Self-righteousness
"Holier-than-thou" redirects here. For other uses, see Holier-than-thou (disambiguation).
Self-righteousness (also called sanctimoniousness, sententiousness, a holier-than-thou attitudes[1]) is a feeling of (usually) smug moral superiority[2] derived from a sense that one's beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person.
I will get off my soapbox now, sorry for the rant! :sry:

Just want to say congrats to the hunt-wa member who got the goat tag. :). Hope he has a fun and safe goat hunt and hope to hear the story at the end of the season. I hope some day to draw my own goat tag. Hope we can get past the drama and unite as hunters and not be so divided

It got a tad sideways when talking about GOV tags in general. Not this specific tag. I am pretty sure that this tag holder will do the tag justice and I am also sure that the site will have his back.
Congrats to the tag holder.

Not a chance! This guy is a working slob like the rest of us. No deep pockets. Just went and pulled the trigger on what could be the hunt of his life. Definately not your typical gov. tag buyer. He knows what he's got and he's going to kick some ars on this hunt! He'll do HW proud! :yeah: :yeah: :yeah: :chuckle:

I would sure hope that Hunt-WA would have this tag holders back. He sounds like a really stand up guy and from what I've heard - not the classic Governor tag holder.
I'll tell you what though, when I purchase this tag I'll keep you all informed!
-
89 posts and still no name to go with the tag. :chuckle:

Well its funny as I have heard the same thing now, that the guy does have the Moose tag as well but cant confirm it just pure rumor I guess. Gosh I wish I wasnt such a working slob and could have a Goat and Moose tag

Very Nice...

Hmmm Bearhunter. I seem to recall seeing some very similar pictures in 2010 when another tag holder drew a Mt Baker goat tag. In fact I think the raffle tag holder shot a collared billy in the rocks above the meadow behind you that scored 51+ inches.
Also there is about 40 feet of snow at that elevation right now so I know those weren't from this weekend!

I hear there's a BIG finders fee this year because the guys got deep pockets and wants a monster nanny!
-
I've heard thru good sources that the Tag holder has hired the Mossback boys to help guide him on his Goat hunt. :yike:Damn this tag holder must have some serious cash if he's hired Mossback. :peep:
-
I just thought I would throw it out there that I have spent quite a bit of time following goats around the cascades. It is obvious to me that ShaneVG has the baker area nailed, but if anyone would like some help further south I would love to be an extra set of eyes on another goat hunt.
-
So where are all these volunteers when I want to do a photo trip?
-
MAN you guys are not helping out the guides at all !!!! :yike:
-
So where are all these volunteers when I want to do a photo trip?
I'll take up anytime. Just let me know when.
As far as big nannies go I have a picture of a 12-13" nanny in the cliffs behind Bearhunter in his picture there. I'll try to post pics tonight when I get home from work.
-
COOL!
-
So where are all these volunteers when I want to do a photo trip?
I would be willing to try and work in a trip to Goat Rocks this year.
-
As promised, here are those giant nanny pics from just behind Bearhunter in the pics he posted.

57 inches even the new pending World Record. Officially scored but waiting for the awards banquet to be panel judged.

Also goes to show that with Goats as well as some other things in this life, an inch makes a world of difference...

57 inches even the new pending World Record. Officially scored but waiting for the awards banquet to be panel judged.

No mass at the bases or all the way up. Billy's will typically carry there mass to the top, also to much gap between horn basses, and a teenager with her...
Th curve to the antlers too I think, no?
Learning as I go here.
A great place to start is by reading this:
http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Education/pdf/HunterEducation/MountainGoatGenderIDGuideWEBRev09102010.pdf
Two things i look at. First of all mass. A big billy starts out very massive (with the bases of the horn being bigger than the diameter of the eye) and carries that mass a long ways along the horn. This goat is a good example.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FMountain%2520goats%2FIMG_4322cropMedium.jpg&hash=70f563571f555137a6757423c9da572cc9c2333f)
A billy also tends to have his horns curve much more uniformly, almost creating a quarter circle with his horns. You can see that well in this young billy:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FMountain%2520goats%2F263583_10100486682531208_10735616_57265944_3020424_n.jpg&hash=8484b6779c8bde329a82126f1b8507c49da45a65)
Here is another young billy that really shows the mass (bigger than diameter of eye) even though he is probably only a year, maybe two old and shows the curve of the horn.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FMountain%2520goats%2F300559_10100530938412068_10735616_58087616_6752000_n.jpg&hash=d37010d431937302820d489df3b3a6f2dbc8060f)
Nannies on the other hand have much narrower horns and don't have much mass at all and don't carry the mass far at all.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FNanny.jpg&hash=2effd7d50a1daf4807548e096f9d8c2ea7333551)
They also tend to be straighter horned with more of a hook at the end as opposed to the uniform quarter circle of a billy.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FMountain%2520goats%2F263114_10100486689437368_10735616_57266174_8032785_n.jpg&hash=4653bc87503aedb5c2597690c14beae636437503)
Here is another nanny just for more comparison:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi244.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg17%2Fshanevg%2FMountain%2520goats%2F262238_10100486667391548_10735616_57265540_7820912_n.jpg&hash=867f17564e0fee9988b836e0c48a9f3aefd9d49a)
Of course you always have your tell tale give aways. Squatting to pee means nanny, standing and stretching hind legs out means billy. When billies are close to rutting they have big bulbs that swell up right behind the base of their horns. Billies tend to have dark dirty spots on their rumps. Nannies tend to stick to larger herds while billlies are more loners. I know Bearhunter said that the fact that the nanny was hanging out with a teenager goat probably means nanny but I have seen a lot of lone billies hanging out with a 1.5 year old billy - they seem to be kind of showing them the ropes. By mid October if you find a big herd with a lone goat following 300 yards behind them, there is a very high chance that lone goat is a billy as they tend to follow the herd around waiting for them to start rutting (which normally happens in November.)
Hope that helps!
-
Don't a lot of the billes get like black spots around the bases of there horns from a gland as well?
-
Don't a lot of the billes get like black spots around the bases of there horns from a gland as well?
Yeah those show up as the rut gets closer in November.

Nice goat shots. The glad is always there, just gets darker as the rut nears/during the rut. You can see the glad in the billy in the first pic you posted.
-
I guess one would just say they are always there, but it becomes more prominent coming into and during the rut.
-
does this tag allow him to hunt anywhere in washington? does this also use his one time draw that was implemented in the late 80's? is it good thru december ? sounnds very interesting just curious one more how big of a goat is he looking for? [billy]
-
The tag holder can hunt any goat unit with more than 1 tag. It has no bearing on the once in a lifetime stuff. This is not a special permit type permit. The OIL's are for special permits only. Raffles, auction tags, incentive tags, etc don't apply to the OIL stuff.

:yeah:

Baker without question :dunno: :chuckle:

I wish the true owner of this Tag would step forward!
I can only keep secrets in for so long! :chuckle:

Thanks for the clarification. Are those the only units that have more than 1 tag or was I incorrect and there are only certain units he can hunt?
-
You were right. I was just making it easier for everyone. :chuckle:
-
Are you sure about the 1 permit restriction? That's not how I read the WAC. :dunno:
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=232-28-283
16) MOUNTAIN GOAT RAFFLE PERMIT

Hunt Area: Any open goat unit with two or more permits during the respective license year.
Wouldn't that also translate to any unit with more than 1 tag?

You were right. I was just making it easier for everyone. :chuckle:
I like adding a challenge.
:chuckle:
-
Now that you put it that way.. where's the "DOH!" smiley.
Well, I tried. Glad you guys are paying attention.
-
I got a text shortly after midnight on the night the tag holder won the tag... I offered to do some bivy trips. I am looking forward to the stories and adventures! Thanks for that text by the way lol :chuckle:

:chuckle:
-
You guys crack me up :chuckle: You both are correct units with 2 or more tags can only be hunted, so as of 2011 regs, only one of the baker units (Lincoln) can be hunted. I talked with a local biologist last week and there are some changes coming down the pipe for this season, some restructuring so we shall see how this years regulations pan out.... for the tag holder that it :sry:
-
Hey Bearhunter... what you know about goat hunting? What area would you pick .... ? man there has to be some big boys in the Baker area... are you familiar with that unit .... Man that guy who has the tag needs to speak up ... these guys are killing themselves .... :dunno:
-
I think we should start a Poll with the most likely names and see what everybody thinks.
-
Yeah someone should do something .... I think it is that ALWINE ARCHER :dunno: :chuckle:

Ok guys enough hiding out Im hear, and its official I have the Governors Goat tag and can hardly wait to get up on the hill!!!! All the rumors are true I do have Doyle Moss on the mountain as we speak searching for that State Record Nanny for me. I have been going threw all my gear and upgraded my rifle from iron sights to a great tasco fixed 2X scope so I can reach out and touch something now. Thinking about getting one of those canvas tents and wood stoves and having it dropped by chopper up on the Black Buttes. Also gonna buying some of those Mud Terrain type tires so that we can get in deep with the Subaru and not have to hike as far. Conditioning is going well, Cut back from a 12 pack of Kokanee to a 6 pack of Busch Lite per day. Doyle says thou that not to worry to much cause if we just get a chopper and theres no hikers up on the mountain we may just be able to shoot one from the air and then fly it out on the hook, that would be off the HOOK YO!!! Almost forgot.... guess what?????? Everyone will be able to watch cause ALWINE is gonna have live streaming footage linked to HUNTWA for all to watch!! Who needs luck when ya got at least a dozen state records running around the mountain and Doyle sleeping with them!!!!
