Getting a pistol for my wife. She is not new to guns but does need more work with them. This gun will be for concealed carry and a quick grab home gun if she can't get to the shotgun. There are a few parameters I'd like you to try to stay within:
1. Looking for one of these cartridges, in my order of preference
1. 9mm
2. .38 special (She's owned one of these before)
3. .380 Auto
4. 9x18mm Makarov
2. Looking to stay under $500
3. her hands are SMALL. My Glock 19 is too large. She can hold it and put her finger on the trigger but, length of pull is just too long for her to pull with any accuracy, even with the 3.5lb trigger.
-
Have you considered a revolver? Much simpler.
-
Hammerless lady smith 38 cal.

.38 special is on the list. She's owned one before. She's not gun illiterate and knows how to work a semi-auto, just hard to find one small enough. That's why I'm asking for help. A Walther PPK is an option I guess. Just hoping there's a smaller 9mm out there that I haven't thought of

Hammerless lady smith 38 cal.
That's what she had before. S&W Model 642. Had the pink grip and everything

You might find some ideas here: http://www.best9mm.com/380acp.html

My wife.didn't like the 642. Too light for +p rounds or even standard .38s. I have it as a BUG and shes much happier with the heavier (but still small) 640. She just shoots and carries .38s even though it will take .357s.
Best wishes for your search.

Kel Tec P3AT.. I have one and I love it. Its flawless and accurate, and I have a belt clip on it like a pocket knife for IWB carry. fits in a pocket too, and the trigger pull isnt that heavy but does take some getting used to.
Alot of people think theyre too good for a Kel Tec though, so you could go with the Ruger rip off of the P3AT, the Ruger LCP. basically the same thing just costs a little more and a little better finish.

Hungarian FEG in 9 mak or 380. Not expensive and they will still work even if not squeezed in a vice hold. Small grip size, same as a pp/ ppk without paying for the name. Double action only auto's are flooding the female geared defense market, but the trigger pull is usually excessive. The 3" ladysmiths are usually smooth and a little easier to hit with than the 2"ers. Model 38's with the shrouded hammer are better than the centennial concealed hammer style. Again, excessive trigger pull makes the things hard to hit with for many ladies. No reason to make things more difficult than they has to be. Kel tec 3at has a skinny trigger and rough frame. Ruger LCP has a slide lock for ez handling and a wider trigger, but they are both equipped with really excessive length of pull and weight on the trigger pull. I own them all. Feg in 9 mak stings a little, but shoots .380 also.

Kahr CM 9
S&W Bodyguard
-
Yeah, forgot about the Kahr. They are spendy but have a very thin grip radius and super smooth trigger pulls. I used to have a steel framed 9 and upgraded to PM-45. Over $500

serious, if its for personal defence in SHTF someone is coming thru my window/door and her adrenline is amped thru the roof you'll want something simple - a revolver fits this bill as a backup to a shotgun.
everyone wants to run and get some auto, but revolers still have a place in personal defence and exceed autos in many areas - including simplicity
-
Kahr CM 9
Thats what I bought my wife and put a laser on it for just a little extra help ;)
-
PS I like it too :chuckle: :chuckle: packs real nice! she now looking for another pistol for her...me...her...me :chuckle:
-
My son's girlfriend just got one of these for concealed carry. It's a Beretta Tomcat .32. Much easier than her .45. Nice little gun. My daughter is thinking about picking one up. Comes in black with blued or black with stainless. Runs about $350-$460 depending on model and where you see them. Neat way to unload the chamber.
Here's a video which explains it better than I could......

Get a Ruger SP101 in .357 mag. 5 shot revolver, it comes in a hammerless model if she likes that. The gun is dead bullet proof. She can shoot all the .38 specials out of it she wants, but can load it with .357 hollow points to carry. You never have to worry about it jamming, or the magazine not locked into place. (especially if she is carrying it in a bigger purse) It goes BANG every time she pulls the trigger. Plus being a Ruger it is built like a brick Chit house, and will never break.
-
You won't pay $500 for the Kahr. I just ordered a CW 40, spare magazine, shipped and insured for four bills from Buds Gun Shop. The CM 9 is only about $30 more and is smaller.
The S&W Bodyguard is a dynamite little .380.
I agree that revolvers are simple, but then again so is a DAO semi-auto.
-
Kahr CM 9
This
My daughter has very small hands and shoots this very well.
Also it is just big enough to be comfortable to actually practice with.
-
yeah the wifes was 415 then the laser, she has small hands and handles it great
-
I have the S&W body guard good little gun. Ireally enjoy carrying my keltech pf-9 more so though. they step up to 9mm gives a better peice of mind. Caliber: 9mm Luger, Weight unloaded: 12.7 oz. Length5.85, Height4.3 Width: 0.88" Barrel Length: 3.1" Capacity: 7 + 1, Trigger Pull: 5 lbs You will have a number of malfunctions the first 100 rounds, it has a break in period were the polymer will wear down to fit. after that its flawless. plus you can buy them all day long for $260. So if there was any incedence and the firearm was taken for evedence, theres barely a loss
-
Ruger LC9 smaller than most smart phones, easy for a female to conceal, more bang than a .380. Fairly inexpensive. And I think you can get it in pink! :chuckle:
-
Based on looks, online reviews, and price, since we can only see them online, we are going to Cabelas today to put these guns in her hands and see how they feel. This is our order of preference so far:
Bersa Thunder .380
Sig p238
Sig p290
Ruger LC9 9mm
Kahr cm/pm9 9mm
Taurus millennium pro 9mm
Beretta Nano 9mm
-
Cabela's has some good prices, but be prepared to wait a Long time in line on a Saturday!
-
keep in mind unless you reload for it, 9mm will be cheaper for practice ammo than any of the others.. 9mm practice ammo I pay 9.99 a box for.. for the .380 it is about 18$.. big difference.
-
Double J if it were me I would take her to a range and let her try shooting a few different pistols. each makers fit is different and each length makes a difference....I so far do not like 45's period, they all have too much recoil and I know I'd get flinchy, that said I loved my 357 revolver but disliked the sight. I have rather long fingers so I find a larger grip isnt as big an issue for me but overall weight and balance is.
If you really want her to shoot this gun and enjoy it and become proficient it would be best if she helps pick it out, guns are like bra's or shoes it really is sort of tough to buy for someone else......ordering dinner for her is one thing gun selection for the best outcome needs her involved.
Try I think its called bullseye in Tacoma they have a ladies day and lots of pistols to try out
-
The Kahr that was recommended is what I also would have recommended. The are small and easily concealable. The one I shot felt too small for me, so I could see how it would be good for a small handed person.
The other guns that I've fired that are good for small hands (autos) have been Walther PPK and the FN FiveSeven. The Five Seven cartridge might be difficult to get, but is actually a well performing round. (Yes, aware it's not on the list)
-
I would set 9mm as your minimum size on the pistol personally. .380 as stated before is almost twice the price as 9mm and with the 9 you get more bang for your buck! Remember concealability on a female as well. A lot harder than a man to hide. :twocents:
-
Just got back from Cabelas. Surprising Saturday. we only waited at the gun counter for about 10 minutes. Got a very patient and knowledgeable clerk. She held about 20 different guns from all makers possible I think. She has settled on either the Taurus Millenium Pro in 9mm or possibly a .40 if she can handle it. It was about the 6th ish gun she held and immediately said "Oh, that's perfect. Much better than the others". Then she compared every gun after that to it and none measured up, well except the Kimber compact but, that's just not an option right now. Now I gotta get her to the range to pick a caliber and then find a deal on one.
-
I agree with Kahr CM9.
.380 and 9x18 are too limited on ammo choices, pricing.
Kahr is an excellent choice.
Buy a Hogue sleeve for it and it's very controllable.
-
I have a Millenium Pro in 9mm and I really like it. It fits my hand well and it's easy to shoot and control. I haven't had any problems with it.
-
Glad she found one she likes... but a taurus really! Don't want you to feel as if I'm kicking dirt in your face but the price is right for a reason :twocents:

Haven't read a bad review yet. And she had her choice of guns basically from the styles she held. Only 3-4 out of the 20ish she held were out of the price parameters and that's the one she liked. Now I gotta find one to have her shoot it.
-
I run several taurus handguns they have been good to me. One has got me out of several jams
-
Now she says she likes the feel in her hand of the Kahr P9 but likes the features and magazine capacity of the Taurus. Nothing quite like picking a gun is there?
-
 happy wife = happy life!
-
Did she look at the xdm? Man they are sweet guns
-
Springfield XD Subcompact, my wife has one in 40S&W and loves it, perfect size and still shoots really good. I think you could pick one up for $525 in 9mm
-
XDM was too wide
-
My wife has tiny hands and the subcompact glocks with the backstrap (or whatever that piece is called) removed fits her like a glove. Gives me glock knuckle though so I make her suffer through it :chuckle: I need to get her her own as well. This is a good thread.
-
Obviously she has to like it, but the Kahr Cm-9 is way cheaper than the Pm's. I have never owned the less expensive Cm series though. I know the Pm's don't jam up no matter how loose they are gripped and they have exc. trigger for a DAO auto. Smooth! and as short as you would want on something with no external safety. Plus the low bore axis keeps the muzzle jump doen, even in my Pm 45 with the medium length grip. 9x19 para/luger is a great round, but .40 is already +P hotness, while popular as heck, go shoot one at night and then stick with the 9mm. Just a suggestion, most trouble comes after dark, and a lot of .40 loads can be blinding out of a short barrel. Single stack Glock in condition III carry? Thanks for the update!
-
Do you think she would actually carry a full size everyday? just a thought
-
Do you think she would actually carry a full size everyday? just a thought
She will not. Looking for a 3.5" ish barrel. 5" total length is gonna be about the max. She took everyday carry into consideration and she picked her few choices, the Ruger LC9 being the third. Gotta go shoot them now.
-
Bought my wife a .40 S&W. She absolutely loves it.
-
She sat down last night and read review after review, cross referenced that with the info she gathered and remembered from holding them at the store, and made an Excel spreadsheet comparing the sizes, magazine capacity, notes, and personal feelings and, after the 2+ hours she put into it, this is her preference list:
1. Taurus Millennium Pro PT111 9mm
2. Kahr CW9/CM9 9mm
3. Ruger LC9 9mm
Next weekend, we are going to the shooting range in Puyallup and let her shoot half a box through each one to find her favorite.
Thank you everyone for all of your input.
-
A lot of people talk them down but those taurus are nice! I had a pt140 and I likeed it a lot!
-
I read about 2 dozen reviews and about 100 posts on other forums. (0% loved them and of the 10% that hated them, they were Gen 1 models from 2007/08. They are selling Gen 3 models now so I'd assume the bugs have been worked out.
Wish I knew someone that had one she could shoot. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate gun ranges where you rent the guns. Guys that work there are ALWAYS jerks that know more than you, even if they don't, and when you walk in and say, "I'd like to rent such and such a gun to see how it shoots." they ALWAYS say, "You would like this gun much better. It only costs twice as much but, you can't put a price on your life. etc. etc. etc". And HOLY CRAP if you ever disagree with them. I'd just like to take her to some woods and let her pull the trigger a few times.
-
Sorry bud, wish I could help! Did she handle the s&w sigma at all?
-
Sorry bud, wish I could help! Did she handle the s&w sigma at all?
No, but the dimensions, operation, and maintenance are almost identical to my Glock 19 so she has basically handled it.
-
Mary's Pistols in Tacoma may have suggestions as to where a rental Kahr may be availible in the south end. Well worth calling her. I've never had good luck with a taurus in any caliber, but she would cut you a deal on one. Agree 100% on your impression of gun shop people, they are different there. Be patient, small shop.....Great selection of used! and new pistols, personal, and personable nearly unbeatable service. She caters to women in general and kind wives in particular. Be prepared to wait up to an hour inside to be served.
-
If I was going to suggest a defense handgun for anyone, it would be a revolver. Give her a full size wheel gun and load it with .38 special.
-
5 or 6 rounds versus 14-17?
-
Top of post, please, small hands, G-19 is too big. 5 shot SS S&W .38spl, but then again it's not my money. I got my X a .22 mag NAA mini revolver and a .22mag derringer. I am just kidding around about the next part, but it does bear considering, as fickle as fate may be! Figured I'd have a better chace of survival with 7 .22's in me than 17 9mm's or 8 .45's or 6 .38's. Remember I was Just Kidding about the last part.
-
Bear spray she wont be afraid to use it and I think I'd rather get shot :)

Unless it's a windy day. been there and that sucks
-
I just know my wife and she would hesitate to pull the trigger of a pistol, her mace can on the other hand stand back.
-
My wife was violently raped 11.5 years ago. That hesitation won't be there. Hell, half the time, I think she's looking for a reason. :chuckle:
-
Double J, I didn't see it in any of the previous posts, but my girlfriend also has tiny hands so we have been trying to find something to fit her as well. She really likes the ruger SR9C, and to be honest I like it as well. It is small enough to fit her hand yet still comfortable in mine. Some places may have it for a little over 500 but it shouldn't be much. Just thought I would offer up some info for ya. I'm sure you guys will make the best choice for her.
