Ok guys its official my info was sent away to the State yesterday by SCI. I did in fact purchase the WA State Governors Goat tag and am very excited for this up and coming season. I am chomping at the bit for the regulations to come out so I can see the restructure of the Mt. Baker hunt and find out if they added any more additional tags in other units. I have always dreamed of purchasing the Governors Goat tag but its been out of my reach financially until this year. At the SCI convention at the Bellevue Meydenbaur center I purchased a $100 poker card out of a fresh deck and low and behold they draw my Joker, and I won $5K instantly$$$$$$ BIG MONEY BABY!!!!! Catch was I had to spend it there which was only fair. I then at that very moment knew that I was going home with the Goat tag unless it went for over $10K, then I would put the money towards a Dall Sheep hunt with one of the Guides there. The Bidding began, my number hit that $10K mark and it must have been the phone bidders maximum bid as well because thats were it ended! I did not get to sleep until almost 3:30am that morning after driving home, I was so excited... Three weeks prior to the SCI Show I decided to change my lifestyle and become a healthy person and get in shape for this upcoming hunting season, so I needless to say this has really keep the motivation going now. As of today I am down 16lbs and got about another 20 to hit my goal and hope to be there by May. I have a personal goal for this tag, and if I dont succed I will have fun trying at least. Two things I know for sure are that my two good friends Alpinehunter and BChaser will be there along the journey with me  Oh ya if anybody was curious I am also known as BillyGoatHunter on here also, which if the Mods want they can destroy that profile. Sorry for stringing you all along it was just to much fun to go along with all the great comments on the other thread. Thanks for all the positive input from many friends on here!!! Ill keep you guys all informed on how the scouting is going... Oh ya and not a chance I would be caught with old Doyle Moss.... Unless hes got a Chopper :chuckle:

Cranked out about 5 miles this morning out on the street. It felt good, and now where headed out the door to go up towards baker on hike into a waterfall with the kids!! Started at 209lbs in Mid Jan. down to 191.7 this morning!!! Goal is to get to 175lbs or less by May and then shed some more while scouting this summer!!

Why aren't you working 'round the clock like the rest of us trying to get the plant up and running so fuel prices can come back down! Sheesh! :chuckle:

I was gonna ask the same thing. I guess since he is hunting in his backyard he is not too concerned about fuel costs. Or maybe he plans on jogging to the Mt.
-
I swear I just saw him running past my house :chuckle: :chuckle: :dunno: man he is quick :o
-
Congrats again James! Glad you finally let the cat out of the bag, that other thread was just getting ridiculous! :chuckle:
I'm looking forward to helping you out here and there with the tag. I'll definitely keep you updated on what i see in the unit! You definitely have potential for a monster but just enjoy the hunt as a whole as well! I know you will.
I plan on being a lot of help to you until that mid-June timeframe when I find out that I drew my Mt. Baker tag! :IBCOOL:
-
That is awesome! good luck man.

-
Stair reps up and down the coker would do you better and every vertical ladder you can climb ,I did a 5 mile loop around the block for 3 months to get ready ,included the hill on slater road and the hill on the lake terrell.........it wasn't enough.Did Tomohoi and american border peak via twin lakes.........................ugggggggh

Another mandatory fatique day off from work, so I whipped out 4.2 out in the rain this morning, starting to feel pretty good! Ordered a couple Ultralite tents to see which one I like the best and send the other back. First one to show up so far is the MSR Carbon Reflex 2 which tips the scale just under 3lbs. Threw it together last night in the house and it seems like a well built tent with use of strong materials. If the rain stops I will take it outside and stake it out and take pictures and put a review together for you guys. I am waiting on my MontBell Cresent 2 which I think is gonna be the one that gets used this year, we shall see..... I also picked up a 20-60x65mm Swaro spotter to sit atop my vanquard carbon fiber tripod so I hopefully will not have to get as close to the goats now to size them up. The goal between now and May is to have all my Ultralight gear together and under 35lbs total, and get my body weight down to 175lbs. Keep you all posted, thanks for all the encouragement so far!!!
-
This going to be great. Good luck and keep us posted along the way.
-
Devotion to the hunt! Love it man!
-
Did you check out the Nemo tents?
-
Gotta love the Swarovski. My dad and I both have them and we love them. Dad bought his at joes close out for like 1200.
-
Like I was telling you the other night I would check out the GoLite Shangri-la 5.

can you only hunt mt.baker
-
I am pretty sure he can hunt any unit that has atleast 2 tags in the special permit draw.
-

Which by last year would eliminate 3 out of the 4 Baker areas.
-
Black Buttes of Baker if the regs stay the same.... I was told they are probably changing though... The biggest Billys are up in the deepest nastiest cliffy buttes of the Black Buttes as well. Who knows if they go to two units then I may get to hunt all the way around the mountain! Definetly gonna spend some time in Goat Rocks and North Chelan as well.....
-
We did a 7 day boat in goat hunt north chelan. Most amazing hunt ever, and I didn't even hold the tag. Many awesome journeys await! Good luck!

I just hope they don't royally screw you and take away any unit with 2 or more tags. That is honestly one of my biggest problems with the governor tag. As the bidder, you should have the right to know what you are bidding on before you can bid. If he Lincoln Peak tag gets pulled from you, it significantly decreases the value of the tag. :twocents:
-
After all the hype on the other thread, I thought that a serious "Bigtime" hunter bought the tag. :tung:
-
Somebody kinds like Jimmy Bigtime himself :chuckle: Dan you going to the MDF banquet next month? We will be there we have a couple tables one with seats left if you would like to sit near me

I have to check, I think I'm supposed to be at the "First man of Lymans" table, I'll be in touch.
How often do you get to hang with the Gov goat tag holder? :party1:
-
So it looks like chowder ridge north lake chelan or goat rocks I was hoping they opened up Lincoln peak for you

Ya, they took away 4 of the 7 Mt. Baker goat tags.... Lincoln Peak was the only unit with multiple tags in the past now its Chowder. I havent spent anytime in Chowder but definetly will this summer become very familiar with the unit. I quess by only having 3 units to hunt it will get my head from spinning trying to fiqure out were I should go. Shanevg told me all access to the Chowder Ridge unit closes Nov.1st and is very hard to access with the gates being shut. Now that I know for sure were I get to hunt Ill have to wait tell mid summer for the Dang snow to melt :bash:
-
Can't wait to follow this thread :) Good luck on your hunt of a lifetime! Sounds like you are on your way to getting into GOAT shape.

Still going to be a great hunt.

Wow... I think Chowder ridge is going to be a busy place this Fall. Nothing like a little competition to add to the stress factor. I hope I get to be the competition.

I think he will shoot a Nanny :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :sry:

I was being half sarcastic but I will tell you that there are 97 B&C entries that are nannies (50 of them making the all-time book). Thus, it's easy to speculate that many more have been killed that would make the book, yet were not entered. So killing a nanny is not really a joke if it's big enough. I would bet a good amount of money that the majority of the nannies entered in B&C are over 10" and many of them being 11" plus. (I wish I was subscribed and could look) When my dad killed his 9.25" goat in BC in 1999, his guide instructed him to shoot a nanny that he guessed at 11.5" and would make B&C easily. Well, unfortunately he missed the nanny.

I have pictures of two different nannies in the Baker area that are 12+ inches including the one Jakelope posted. I also have a billy that is pushing 12. There are some big goats up there. That is for sure.

Have you been out scouting yet? Snow is starting to melt but I would imagine you still need to take the snow shoes with.

I know James was hoping to get out this week. Still pretty tough to access his unit but the goats can be found.
I was out last weekend and found this yearling. Snow is definitely starting to melt.

On another note, here are the big nannies people have been referring to:
This is one of them:

Fiqured Id try and keep everyone entertained with a little Goat hunting update! Besides working 6 and 7 days a week for the last 3 months, I have been researching and buying new gear, getting in shape, losing 32 pounds, and finally getting out to do a little Goat Scouting a few days ago with the family. Watched about 2 dozen different Goats from quit a distance threw my Swaro spotter, thanks to Luke Moffat on Rokslide.com for the sale of that! Everything I have done with my few days off this year has evolved around Goat hunting preparation, including family time. Here are some pictures of the start of my Quest to kill a top 5 Billy in the State of WA this season! Every week or two I will try and post up pics and video of the progress from gear to scouting to the kill, Enjoy!!
To be successful, I fiqured it was time to change my lifestyle by working out daily, eating frequent and healthier foods and shedding 30lbs of unwanted body fat. I feel so much healthier already and got another 15lbs to go!

My goal is to kill one with my Bow, so I picked up a used Mt. Goat 3d target and have been practicing from steep angles and long shots, heres a picture of my boys helping dad with his archery skills.

I was in need of a new backcountry tent this season as my Eureka has seen its last Thunder storm in the Wyoming Backcountry and didnt hold up to well. So after much research I decided between the MontBell Cresent II and the MSR Carbon Reflex 2. I bought both, set them up and disected them and finally came to a conclusion that the MSR would be my tent of choice this season, so back to backcounty gear went the Montbell. The MSR is a little roomier and better vestibule space for my pack and boots, as well as being about 1/2 pound lighter, weighing in at 2lbs 8oz, with fly and stakes. Watch Steap and cheap as they have been on there for $225 lately which is hell of a deal for a $500 tent.

Late winter on a day off I felt the need to be up in the Mountains near the Goats, so I packed up the family and headed for Mt. Baker for a day of sleding and glassing on a beautiful day. Got my cardio in as well pulling the kids up the mountain with there sleds!

Finally enough snow has melted off that a couple days ago on my day off we packed up and headed up to the mountain to get a view of some of the Goats in the unit. Had to drag the kids in the snow with there sleds about a mile but we made it and was able to glass up about 2 dozen Goats with the New Spotter. One was a collared Goat not sure if it was a Billy or Nanny, was to far off. Heres some pics of the country the goats were in and that I will be hunting in.

There was around two dozen goats in the snowless area in the picture and a couple more up above that in the snow.

Right on! Scouting is such a fun part of having a tag!

Pretty cool man. Getting the whole family involved is a bonus. Keep at it.

A better score than the tag....a good wife. Sounds like she's a keeper to say the least! Great job with the pre-season stuff...inspirational and cool too see.

Wow what an awesome thread this will be. Congrats on the tag and best of luck on the hunt. I look forward to more updates.

Like I was telling you the other night I would check out the GoLite Shangri-la 5.
I have the GoLite Shangri-la 5, a stove jack (soon to be installed) and a small stove on order from Kifaru. It is going to be a real sweet set up for the late fall hunts.
The MSR is a real good tent for the weight.
-
Here's a goat from this spring for you to ogle at! It's a giant yearling!!! :IBCOOL:
Thanks to my lovely wife for the background commentary! :)
-
Hunt hard while it's blue sky. Once the rain starts and the cloud level drops it's hard to see goats. Buddy of mine learned that the hard way and ate his tag. We both got drawn and I did take a nice 9 and 7/8 inch billy in the second week. By the third week it was socked in and goat hunting and spotting more precisely was tough. We hunted the rest of the season for his goat to no avail. Look for the yellow tinged billes those are the toads you are looking for. Good luck to you.

I'll be there right w ya buddy just drew my first and only goat tag for Washington state

Artman hopefully u can get some time to come up... Help ya get in shape for ur elk tag
-
Nimrod, no worries you probably wont even see me as I drew a Hangman B Moose tag and will probably focus my efforts on that :chuckle: Besides everyone knows the big Billys are in the Goat Rocks, Hence the name :dunno: No in all seriousness, good luck and well probably cross paths. Kinda bummed out, Im having to lay off the workout program for a bit, as I tore a muscle or seperated a rib or two about a week ago, not really a fun thing, pretty painful still... hoping it heals quick like!
-
I hate you James!
-
Good luck too u as we'll it should be a great hunt and I hope we all havest a nice billy,I mean there is only 3 ppl going to be up there mabe 4 got to be at least two 13 inch Billy's up there right :chuckle: hopefully u heal fast that's a bummer, I have been been avoiding the simples of tasks and all the fun games I'm use too just to avoid a minor injury that could cripple my season. U Hurd who drew the raffle goat permit
-
No I havent heard who drew the Raffle tag... But it could potentially be more than 4 in there if you factor in all the tags the Natives get... I do not understand why they would drop 2 units for the area and allow such a potentially high harvest rate in one unit and not spread it out as there are plenty of Goats all the way around the Mountain, but then again I am no biologist either...
-
:bdid:D :bash:
-
Who did?
-
Letting the natives have tags too lol
-
Deadline to buy raffle tickets isn't until july 13th. Congrats on the purchases/draws by the way guys. Looking forward to some stories.
-
Nimrod, I heard somebody like your brother had a Chowder tag as well?
-
Its my sisters, half sisters husband who
Drew also what our the odds of that

Wow looks like we really get to see some goats get smacked this year

If the raffle winner (drawing hasn't happened yet) joins in the hunt I'm sure it will be the last year for the Chowder ridge tag. More than likely will be anyways so make sure you guys get the big ones!

Once I figure out what a big one is :o

I am afraid you're probably right 3nails. The logic behind the Mt. Goat tag allocation absolutely astounds me and makes no sense whatsoever. I hope James and Nimrod get a couple of beauties up there. They are definately there...
-
Thanks blacktailer it should be a fun hunt..
-
Knock on wood but the natives haven't hit the Chowder Ridge herd that hard yet. Seems to be one of the herds with the harder access in the area.
The tag allocation is a bit strange but hunters on all the units last year reported low goat numbers. I know the aerial survey counts were low this year. The biologists say they have set up rules to allow them to close and open units in a reactionary way year to year. As long as they react equally quickly when herd numbers are more visible because of a more normal snow year I am OK with it.
As for the Chowder Ridge unit having so many potential hunters this year - I wouldn't worry too much about it. The Lincoln Peak and Chowder Ridge herds are both easily big enough to sustain 4 hunters in a given year. I think WDFW wants to have at least one Baker unit open for the governor tag and raffle tag and they are trying to take some pressure off the Lincoln Peak herd for a year or two.
Hopefully we have less snow in the hills this fall than last year and the goats return to their more normal habitats this summer/fall so the aerial surveys are back up again this year.

Thanks for the info Shane...

With our very mild spring beginning of summer i think that will be harder shanvg. :twocents:

You might be surprised at how much less snow there is than last year. Not as low as some years but significantly less than last. The real determining factor is the next 4 weeks. We need to get some warm weather soon to get the snow melting again.
We actually had a pretty warm April and first part of May. Our last 3 weeks have been really lame though.

Don't worry. I'll still find plenty of bears!

Weather wasn't the greatest today, but I was able to spot some goats from a distance. 5 new kids in a herd of 20 or so goats is always a good sign! The thunderstorm this afternoon was crazy. I had to turn around 3 different times and take a new route home because of trees across the road and I wasn't carrying a chain saw. I'm glad I wasn't way up a logging road without one! Season keeps getting closer and closer!

Did you see the Goat with the orange tracking colar in that herd?
-
Did you see the Goat with the orange tracking colar in that herd?
No I didn't. Interesting too as I've never seen a goat with a collar in that herd. Which probably means it either migrated into the unit or got collared last year. Maybe blacktailer or 3nails can pitch in if they have ever seen a collared goat in the unit.
-
Never seen any collared goats up there. Seen two collared nannies up on West Church a few years back. Natives seem to keep that herd thinned out pretty well. Nice to see the new kids out and about. Assuming you are videoing where I think you are, that is the spot where Jeremy and I counted 96 goats including a bunch of kids.

Yeah it was the same spot. There could have been a lot more goats there it was just too foggy. These were the only ones below fog line. Yeah I've seen collared goats up on Coleman Pinnacle but never in this unit. That's not to say they couldn't migrate between units though.

Almost time to hit the mountains as the snow is receeding... Cranked out 8 ground pounding miles today and 6.2 yeasterday, putting me at 14.2 for the week gonna try to get in 50 miles by next monday, then hit the hills the following weekend and take some goat pics! Hopefully everyone that drew there tags is working to get in great shape this season, cant hardly wait myself!
-
I've been hitting the sand hill pretty hard trying to get the cardio up...Nothing better then quick sprints up hill in sand to get the lungs burning Been hiking up st Helen's every week.. I might not bring a fun on this hunt just a rope and try to catch one :chuckle:

Throwing some gear together for a 2 day trip this weekend, hope to be able to access in fairly deep on Mt. Baker as we have finally had some warm weather to melt off the record snow pack we had late in the season. Got the new Tines up digiscoping adaptor, and packing the video camera as well with any luck well find a couple dozen goats to check up on! Gonna run with the old trusty Lowe Alpine pack this weekend, cant hardly wait to get my new Timberline T2 loaded up and field tested when it shows up here sometime in August! Post some pics when we get back!

You should have decent weather this weekend as well. A few clouds rolling in but nothing major. I hope the visibility cooperates for you.

Hey Nimrod how did your scouting trip go?

James, you need to attach a 75 lb rock to the pack for the trip out so you get the real life experience.

I hear ya, Im sure its gonna be a challenge like no other, Ill be packing lots of Ibprofen!

By the way. You are going to love the Timberline. I have the first production model made and I have had it since last October. I am also on Kifaru's Prostaff. It's done very well (4/4 on hunts with it) and is amazing at carrying heavy loads. My favorote part is how small it gets in daypack mode. Be sure to watch the videos on YouTube created by Patrick on how to properly wear a Kifaru pack. It's somewhat unique, or at least it was to me.

I have a T1 with the standard lid, Grab-it, Aron Snyder lash kit, 2 small waist belt pounces and both the composite and custom molded aluminum 26" stays. I have a very curved upper back and the extra curve in the molded aluminum stays are perfect for me. The weight difference between both stays is pretty minimal. (see the attached picture) One tip on this pack is don't over pack it. It will "barrel" and this will cause pressure on your mid and upper back. If you pack your pack nicely and take a little extra time, it will be the best thing since sliced bread. The problem I mentioned above is the reason the DT's were created. I love a big pack with nothing lashed to the outside, hence why I wanted 7000+ cu inches of space.
I am just like you. I will be purchasing a MegaTarp w/ annex, small stove and many other goodies soon. I love my Nallo GT 4 but the oppertunity to have a sub 2 lb. shelter for two (I already have my trekking poles with me) is pretty intriguing, not to mention the ability to add instant warmth for below timberline. Some day I really want an 8 man tipi too. :)
Let me know when you get your pack. I remember how hard that wait was for me but it was 100% worth it once I figured out how to get the thing dialed in.

You could always try my T1 with both stays and a decent load and see which one you prefer. Kifaru can always tweak the curve on the aluminums for you too based on what you think was best. I live in Oly but if you are ever down this way, let me know.

I had a great time up there last week besides the skeeters:/ lol got some great pics although all threw a spotting scopeand didn't durn out all that good, I really tried to keep my distance and just abserve, saw 27 goats and some awsome country probley try and get a little closer next time looking forward to my next four off probly stay up there for 3 days or so I'm going to bring some bug dope next time 49 bites total :bash: thanks for sharing ur pics Bear hunter they look great ... The snow is melting fast should probly be able to dive to the trail head next time
-
It's about time for an update. You should have full access now.
-
Yeah sorry for the delay... But did get a chance to camp up there for the last 3 days saw over 80 different goats and the weather was pretty good some fog the first day but cleared up Nicley the rest of my trip was able to find numerious shooter Billy's which I would be happy to harvest I'm not the best in judging goats yet I would have to say there was at least one or two billies that would go b&c and one really nice billy that had broken off his horn which is a shame cause he will never get that length back ... But great trip took tones of pics which I'll have to go download onto my brother computer cause my I phone is not compatable with this site... I'm going to try to get up there again thur-sun to try and navigate my way onto the other side of the unit did not feel comfortable doing it alone it it crazy country and tests the limits... Hopefully the hard scouting and time I spend up there pays off...

I just sent Nimrod a few pics from last Saturday and Sunday that I finally got downloaded. I don't know how to judge them well, but one looked pretty good. It's a pos camera but we was about 40 yards away so good enough to see.

It is almost go time! Are you guys ready?

Never been so nervious in my life I have decided to pack my bow and gun it's extra weight but I couldn't imagin not shooting this animal without my bow I scouted 20 plus days I'm in great shape and know the country fairly
-
I shot one and thought I had more than enough gun in the 7mm Rem mag,if I were to do it again(which I never will, once was more than enough) I would be aquiring a .338 win mag.I can't even imagine shooting one with a bow, your in for a rodeo I do know that much.Your heart will jump through your throat when the thing runs to the edge and commits suicide by vertical drop,Be prepared for a jumper.

jeeez sounds like something to look forward too !!!! I just want to see a big goat go down ! Who care if he is hamburger when you go to pick him up ...Less to pack ... :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Bow,
When I got all giddy about it,I enlisted the help of two local goat guys, both had killed a bunch of them, this was in the days before the once and done draw if you killed something, well between the two of them they had lost 3 goats due to the jumper syndrome, they jump and land on a ledge that is inaccesible from above or below and you've got nothing, they tried for 3 days to get to one with all kinds of climbing gear and it was to no avail,I know another guy who had the same thing happen.Heck mine was a jumper with 3 in the boilerhouse and one in the ankle.

Don't worry Nimrod. Not a lot of truly inaccessible ledges in that unit. Especially when I can gain access to a 300 meter rope if need be to help you get it out! We'll get your goat even if it jumps, I promise!
-
...
-
Which unit you got? I had the Ruth Creek and if I remember right after 20 years the other guys with the inaccessable jumpers had Barometer.Mine jumped off the backside of american border peak.

Yeah, back side of American Border woudl be a real pain in the arse. This unit isn't near as rugged and rocky. I wish they'd open up that Ruth Creek hunt again, that'd be a blast!
-
Dan, pretty much just been sitting around gaining weight and not really been motivated... I wish I could just get a refund :dunno:
Really dude? You gotta get after it! Its your dream hunt, get it done!

I'm here to tell you it was FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF'D to the max,I've never been so beat, battered and bruised in my life, the trip down to tomohoi and out was GNARLY,I got poked by his horns so many times everytime I look at the head on the wall I get ticked off all over again...............IT SUCKED!

What's the update is the hunt on yet?
-
I think Bearhunter is a bit distracted by trying to get his career as a huntographer kickstarted. :chuckle:
-
James is in CO chasing elk as we speak! He needs to get back here and fill that goat tag!
-
:yeah: I was thinking the same thing!
-
In Colorado hunting elk with Aron Snyder currently, will be focused on killing my goat in October, Aron will be here then as well to be me with the hunt! We have taken one 170s muley, a cow and now are trying to fill our two bull tags. Got on two bulls this evening over 300... Keep u guys posted, I'm at 12k feet now with bad service here in the backcountry :)

You can see for a hundred miles here above Timberline so it's a huge line of site for cell service. It's still early Bulls are only talking in the evening and they won't hold there ground, sitting here hoping the Elk come back into this basin from last night. 4 days left to hunt after today, time to get to it. Keep you guys posted! Killed a tree eating Porcupine yesterday...

Cow down!

Canyon above were I was close to two Big 6xs...

I think hats just too much hunting for one person. Are you sure you don't want to give me your goat tag?

Thanks for sharing! Get back to it and shoot straight!

Last leg of the trip, wish me luck 3.5 days to find a horny Elk, moving to a new area, finally got some overcast weather no full moon and a good Barometric pressure change things should be good! Check out this record class Moose I got within 10yards of, will post video when I get home :)

You should apply for that moose permit next year. I'd be shocked if you didn't draw! :dunno: :chuckle:

Thats awesome!

 some great meat right there. I have always wanted to hunt elk in CO. I will some day, my dad shot his first elk there. I would love to take one there as well.

Thats a great bull.

:yeah:
James draws anything he applies for! He'd probably draw without even having the 3 preference points necessary to apply because the hunt just happened to be undersubscribed the year he applied!
Great bull moose by the way.
-
5 miles in with blood on the hands and to far to go back to bivy camp... I guess it's sleeping by a fire and pine boughs to night, just heard a Bull were gonna kill in the morning now that all the cow tags are filled:) hope to get some sleep!

Helped pack out the Colorado Raffle moose tag holder Moose today, lots of work as well as lots of fun! So far this year I have helped pack out 4 different animals with my Kifaru T2 and couldn't be happier!
-
That is a nice moose.
Heck you are doing great this year on getting meat in the freezer!
-
That is an absoluletly massive Shiras moose. Do you have any measurements? Width, points per side, length? Well done.

The mornings are feelling alot like fall and I bet the hair is growing on those mountain goats as we speak. Hows that trigger finger doing? :chuckle:

Good luck James . Long hair = a way nicer mount , so if it isnt 12 inches dont fill the tag yet :chuckle: Good luk man , give er hell!!
-
Good luck James! I hope you find a monster! Keep me posted man.
-
Charlie, that is exactly the way Im going into this hunt... If it seems like it will push high into the record books I will attempt with my bow if theres any question wether he's big enough or not, Ill hold out another month, but then I do run the risk of being snowed out, as well but that doesnt look like its gonna happen anytime soon... :dunno:
-
Cant wait to see how this hunt turns out!!
-
Good luck James hope ya find what your looking for.
-
I for one hope you don't tag out this weekend so I can go hunting with you next weekend! :chuckle:
-
Im sure well be spending some time on the Mountain next weekend as well Shane :)
-
I finally got snowed out in '96. East Ross Lk. area (back when Baker had no tags available). All I wanted was a respectable one (you know him when you see him kinda thing). 17 days up there by myself. No cook kit. Mixed nuts (I still hate filberts), loose granola and water. I could've shot an average billy just over the line (he came out 4 evenings in a row) but didn't because it wasn't right (poaching in my book). I hope you get a dandy. The longer you wait the better the hair but you do run a risk. Just saying. Now days it is a OIL tag (I know that you know that). Utilize good, close, fun help and get'er done. Take care, Patrick.
-
good luck to you....

Good luck on your Goat hunt bearhunter

Man, I wish I heard about things as fast as you guys... I passed on a 10" billy on Friday at 28 yards with my bow, then I drew on him a 44 yards and told him he was dead maybe later :chuckle: Seen about 35 goats that day and got completely fogged out the next. Had my bivy sack opened cause it was warm out that night, I woke to a wind storm and rain, by then it was to late as my bag was all wet, but it still keep me dry. Today we seen 68 different goats with a couple of those being 11" nannies. As well as a very nice billy bigger than Fridays billy is all Im gonna say, and he was in a unapproachable postion for today. The plan is to head in Wednesday morning the 7 to 8 miles to were he is at and post up there with bow in hand until he puts himself in a stockable position. So starting Wednesday I will have 2.5 weeks off to get it done before the weather hits! Got lots of great video in the last few days as well.... Stay tuned :)
-
Ooooohhh Buddddyyyy !! Good luck man.
-
I don't know if I could have let a 10"er walk like that! Glad you have more time to put in and hope the weather works out for you.
-
After finding the goat we found today, I am thankfull that we decided to hold out a bit. To be honest with you I would have been pretty bummed to end the hunt on the evening of the first day, I want a hunt and the opportunity to concour the mountain as well.... With a great Billy to show for it in the end :)
-
I can 100% understand that
Sometimes it just happens :chuckle: I can and have been know to get a itchy trigger finger or thumb when shooting a bow :chuckle: Deer seem to be the only thing I can pass and pass and pass on. I am kinda glad you didn't kill him as well. That way you can collect some more videos and photos!!!
-
I sure wish you just hammer something all ready and end my incredible jealousy!!!!
-
I bet vg is happy you didnt pull the trigger.
-
Bearhunter good luck!! Man you in hunting heaven in 2012, lol. Or maybe every year? Awesome stuff!!!!

Another goat tag holder filled his tag over the weekend. I wonder if he will post pics. It may be the one Charlie has.

When are you going to kill a goat ....James ? Patiently waiting :dunno: :tung:

-
When the hair gets longer or he finds a 12 inch billy :chuckle:
My consensus is long hair AND a 12" billy! :chuckle:
-
Tony, there were no other goats taken this weekend on Baker, both the chowder tag holders filled there tags last weekend, unless the Lincoln peak holder tagged out?
-
Really just looking for a big billy, there hair is not bad rite now and is starting to grow. Already after being fogged out 1 day a little nervous how hard weather can make the hunt....
-

Nah, the more hair the shorter it makes the horns look :chuckle: Find a bald one, that sucker will look HUGE! :chuckle:

Thanks everyone, second moose I've packed out this year maybe I'll be at three tommorrow... My buddy Aron Snyder from Colorado just got in tonight so after tommorrow my nose will be to the ground trying to find the right Billy... I go back to work on the 18th and now don't have to worry about my moose tag any longer so I can stay focused! I took her at 255yards with a quick kill to the head so as to not ruin any meat, got it on film as well... Will entertain you guys with that later this winter when time permits.
-
Congrats James, nice job!!
-
On the goat trail, bad news my buddies chopper went down last night in the wilderness, but he made it out 20miles we were supposed to be with him....crazy good luck on our part!

Just got an update from James and Aron. They made it into the spot where they got the glimpse of the "monster billy" last week. The had the whole herd feed out in the open for quite a while and had a long time to study the goats. Turns out the "monster billy" was a 12+ inch nanny with large bases (thus mistaking it for a billy after seeing it for only 5 minutes in the trees.) They are now going to climb out of the hole they are in to a different drainage in the unit and see if they can find any billies up there where there were a couple monsters hanging out earlier this summer. Jame's air matress (I don't know what kind he had) popped and they don't have a repair kit along so sleeping has been really cold. If they don't find anything tonight they are planning on heading back to the truck, grabbing their backup air matress and checking out a different unit.
-
Darn !
-
Thanks for the update!

Another update from James:
Spotted one nanny and kid and a lone billy in the next drainage. Don't know where the big herd is. They are moving one more ridge over to see if they have dropped into that drainage. If not they are planning on heading out tonight to regroup, get a new sleeping pad, and probably move into one of the other units.
-
Unreal good fortune with the weather this year! On normal years it could be socked in with clouds for a week at a time up there.

:yeah:

Heard from James and Aron again tonight. They spotted a possible shooter but after getting closer realized it was another 12+ inch nanny. Only one billy today and they cannot locate many goats at all. Aron is complaining that these WA goats are nothing like CO goats as they go bed down in the trees. He says it's closer to hunting alpine mulies than mountain goats. They are spending the night tonight and then checking a few more drajnages before moving to another side of the mountain.
-
Monster nanny :yike: :chuckle:

That's two different 12+ inch nannies today!!!
-
I know!!! I heard they had a monster spotted. Figured it would be a done deal and that turned out to be the first big nanny. To find 2 that big it is crazy!!! I remember that giant one you have posted pictures of.

Here's the unofficial green score sheet, I double checked after the first talley and everything seemed to match up, hopefully I didn't screw anything up and it holds!!!!

Congrats! Great goat. What a great achievement. Great story. Thanks

The shot was 47yards and I couldnt have been happier with the placement, he piled up at 30 yards. It was all captured on video, I will share when i get caught up around here... Back to reality/work tommorrow :)

I really want to get someone over to score the Goat for me to verify that Im not that far off, I keep feeling like I did something wrong in the measurements... Anyone local good at scoring goats wanna come over and throw a tape on it? Thanks everyone for all the positivie comments! I not really having any luck in convincing the wife in me going deer hunting this next weekend, Ill probably get out thou and take one of the kids... thats the only way Im gonna see the hills again anytime sonn :chuckle:
-
I think Garth over at Fidalgo is an official scorer. He may be SCI though I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
-
Garth, Bruce tedayeske in Custer and myself are all official sci scorers I believe. I think buzzi cook in north bend is the closest b&c scorer and I think I may see him soon
-
I hope that score holds James!!
-
Nice !! 51 , you set out and did what you wanted to do man, congrats!!
On a DYI hunt. No guide. NO Big Bucks spent. Close to home. An accomplishement with bow (or any other weapon), to be proud of forever. Document the story well for your grand kids.

Thanks Willy! Here are some Canadian tourist/hikers that were very interested in seeing some mountains goats and hearing about our past weeks hunts for bear and goats. I even gave them some Bear peperoni sticks and they loved them! They were a lot more friendly than many of the Whatcom county hippies that we ran into on the trail!

North Dakota archery Whitetail bound...
Well only 950 more miles of the 1300 to go! It's gonna be a loonnnngggg night! I'm tasked with picking up another 150lbs of cracked corn before I get there tommorrow for the baits... Morning hunts will be spot and stalk with the afternoons sitting on baits. A little different than the backcountry style I'm used to.... Hope my patients keeps me still :)

Bonsai trip in my wife's VW TDI to save on fuel cost...

-
Will do deerslyr thanks for the invite... I will probably try to get to at least Missoula before stopping but you never know....
-
1 blown stalk on a decent 5 point whitey this morning with the wind in my face and sleet coming down at a chilly 31 degrees... Made my way threw a harvested sunflower crop to watch the deer sneak out of the field into the sunflowers never to be seen again... 1 roadside pheasant down and one missed, now we're headed out with some others to put a big group pheasant hunt together. Also found a nice area were a buck made 4 scraps and horned up several trees, they are starting to come into the rut here, I think the snow is helping!

What an awesome looking goat hunt. I am stoked for the day I pull my goat OIL tag. Hope to get it on bakeas well. I grew up around that mountain still my favorite spot to hike and ski.
