Title: 10mm 1911?
Post by: sled on March 03, 2012, 02:27:04 PM
Anyone own, shot, or have any experience with a 10mm 1911?  I am thinking about buying one.  Really like the kimber, but would like any feedback about any of them.

All I've heard is if your gonna buy a 10mm buy a glock. I've heard the 10 is really hard on 1911 types. Then again that's what I've "heard". That said I love my g20.

I have a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm and love it! Has some mods done to it by far my most favorite. For targets I reload 180gr solids on 5.5 grains of bullseye.

All most word for word what I was going to say.
The 10MM is rough on the 1911. As long as you don't plan on shooting it much with full power loads, it will work. The G-20 is the way to go, as I too have done.

I also have a G29, like it more than the 20.

Do not buy a Colt Double Eagle 10mm. I saw one for a decent price and I am very glad I researched it before I made a decision.

Look for a Colt Delta Elite or a S&W 10xx series. From what I have read the 10mm 1911's are in need of a serious buffer and that is the big problem.

I love my G20SF that I just got, but if I had a ton of money to drop on a 1911 I would get an STI Perfect 10!

If you have the scratch Nighthawk Custom makes a sweet long slide 1911 in 10mm.

It's funny that everyone likes the Glock 10mm better than the 1911s. I sold my G20 and G29 to get a 1911 in 10mm. I will give the Glock an edge when it comes to flawless feeding, but that comes with a price. The very open feed ramp on the 10mm Glocks is also what makes them tear up the brass. 1911s can be a little pickier about bullet profile, but in exchange you get better case head support.

All you need to do is put in the appropriate recoil spring and the 10mm is no harder on a gun than any other caliber. The only problem I see with the 10mm 1911 is the cost. If you can find a deal on a Kimber Eclipse or a Dan Wesson, I say go for it!! Selling my Dan Wesson CCBT was the biggest mistake I ever made. :bash:

And your point is that the Glock goes bang every time while the 1911 may not? That's not a point at all. Glock brass may not be pristine? That's not one of my criteria for a pistol.

Wow! Interesting info on this thread.  Glad I stumbled across it.

I own both the G20 & the Colt.  Wish I could afford a Kimber or Nighthawk!! But I should be content w/what I got.  The 10mm is way to spendy for me to go to the range often.  Cheapest range ammo is about $ .65/rd.

I am partial to 1911 (just my stubborness) but have shot the Glock much more.  The G20 is stock except for the trigger job (typical).  I do like the larger round capacity when I'm carrying it for personal protection when bear hunt'in (main reason I got a 10mm).  I realize there are more potent handguns in revolvers but like the compactness of the pistol.  When I'm on my mtn bike I prefer the 1911 in a tanker holster-besides if a bear is trying to chew on me, it would probably be all over in 7 rds one way or the other eh?  :(

OH, almost forgot, yeah the 1911 collector I bought the Colt Delta from warned me of slide cracking on the earlier 1911 10MMs said it had been corrected on "later" models....sorry I'm not more specific.  Don't shoot mine much as it seldom goes to the range like the Glock (should learn to reload!).

I think you are in the clear Sideswipe. Any self respecting bear isn't gonna want to chew on somebody as lean and full of gristle as you. They are gonna want something with a little more fat on their bones such as myslef. Hence my saying......always bear hunt with somebody fatter and slower (and don't give 'em a gun).

The 1911 is not unreliable. Its simply a matter of shooting quality ammo instead of cheap bulk ammo. The poor case support on a Glock is a safety. Concern to me. I've had a variety of factory 10mm ammo blow out the case head in a Glock. The Glock Kaboom is a real issue worth considering.

Colt had some pretty good spring a barrell problems. Like takeing off the grips and watching them fly. When they developed the series 90 it answered all the problems. Though they couldn't shake the bad reveiws. The series 90 double eagles are great shooters and some worth big $$$$$$

I own and shoot Delta Elite and Glock 29. The Colt has a heavier than stock spring. They both buck with heavy loads. My 2nd Delta, got rid of my G-20 as it was too huge to carry. I would say get a 1911 Dan Wesson 10mm. But that's me.
