Title: Arrow, vane and glue Combos?
Post by: RIVERRAT on March 04, 2012, 06:02:02 PM
I am trying new combinations of arrows (maxima hunter), vanes (flex fletch), glue (flex bond) and just picked up a new Bitzenburger helical jig.  What combos are others using?   I really like the flex fletch and may try the ACC pro hunters but I am not really impressed with the glue.   I lost a few vanes today when I 10 ringed some old bails at my local walk through and they went vane deep.    Maybe I should just be using some old arrows for this type of shooting and using my good arrows only on 3D and hunting.  Thoughts?

I run the vanetec hp's. A 2" high profile vane like the blazer. I did not like the blazers because of the bases being flat. I guess they fixed it but I won't switch back any time soon. I run a high color wrap orange and white for the most part. I also shoot goldtip xt's 5575's with my 4 fletch setup. Crank up the offset and let them fly

Easton fmj's with blazer vanes with a helical and i am using loctite gel super glue. Works better than goat tuff and is way cheaper, IMO.

I use AAC max bond glue and vanes, for both my target and hunting set up. I have never had one come off yet and you dont need to prep the vane like you do with flex fletch

I use Gorilla Impact Super Glue.  I've also used Loctite Super Glue Gel.  Both work well.

Your issue might be the Flex Fletch vanes.  My buddy uses them and there are some very particular steps he says you have to follow to get them to bond well.

Has anyone used  Flex Tite Platinum on Blazers and Easton Axis?

I've been using the Bohning Fletch Tite and Blazers on Beman ICS Hunters with no problems. Using a Bohning Blazer Helical Jig also.

Also, to more specifically answer your question on glue, I have used Fletch Tite Platinum.  I had no problems with it, other than it takes a while to set.  I can fletch arrows much faster with my Bitz using the Gorilla Glue.

If you're trying to put some helical/offset on your Blazers with the Platinum, I'd leave it in the jig for about 5-10 minutes to make sure it's getting a good set.

Maxima 350, blazer vanes, G-5 Blue Glue, Bohning Blazer Jig.  I have to add (hopefully) lighted nocks as my arrows are under 400 grains right now   >:(

Again try Max Bond glue, you only need to clean the shafts NOT the vanes. the glue is set in 15-20 secounds. You can shoot the arrows in 10 min

Tried just about all the glues out there.  Goat Tuff is good, but it tends to not like variables in weather.  Saunders NPV has been the most consistant performer.  Maxima shafts are a little tricky to get good bonding.  Best bet is a high quality laquer thinner first (Absolutely not paint thinner or acetone as they leave too much residue).  Or my favorite is to apply something like a carbon Blazer 4" wrap.

Flex Fletch vanes are a great vane, but you have to really wipe the base down well before fletching.  And, they really don't much care for the instant adhesives.  Use the same high quality laquer thinner as you would for the shafts.  Place the vane in your Bitz clamp and rub until you see some color witness on the thinner soaked white towel.  Buggers will never come off then!

If you are using Goat Tuff or other Cyanoacrylate glue you must rinse off the thinner really good and let it dry for a good long time.  Simple Green might be a better cleaner if using these type of glues, but again rinse, rinse & rinse again.

The only vane I never worry about cleaning has been AAE.  They have a Blazer copy that is outstanding as is the Max Hunter.  I've switched exclusively to AAE as have most of the competitive shooters I know.

RadSav nice choice, just add the Max Bond gile and you have the best combo out there.

Anybody tried fobs?

If you like "different" just for the sake of being different ok.  But if you are hoping for a better performing arrow? Save your money.

fob's are o.k they do not gain anything. Plus they are kinda a pain. Do not try to crawl threw brush with them. They are designed to pop off the back of the arrow :chuckle:
