looking for info.ive hunted the okanogan for years thinking about  switching up and hunting unit 186.most of the unit is public land are there any places to park a trailer?   is it mostly spot and stock?the cheif joe wildlife area takes up most of the unit is it access by foot only?i hope so im not looking for your secret spot just any info would help. w/ the price of fuel i was hoping to get some info before deciding to drive over there and doing some scouting could probably only get over there once for a couple of days before the opener. thanks kram

It's been a while since I was down there last, but at that time it was all walk in. There was room for some trailers also. If I remember right there was a road or two headed up the hill, not sure how far they go though. In case you have not been there it is very steep walking.

I'll say it:

it is very steep walking.   :chuckle:

Seriously, I have always wanted to hunt that unit but never have. Drove through there one time a few years ago, and yes it is just a little on the steep side.   :yike:

All I can say is I could not beleive how many people are down there! Alot on quads and motorcycles, horses and hiking in. Good luck! I quit hunting down there, just to many people.

Bucklucky is right. Most of the public access will likely have more people than you are use to in Okanogan belive it or not. Lots of deer though. If you are willing to pack in away from the roads 4-5 miles you get away from crowds.

If you want something different, give the Blues a try. Take the mountain road from Pomeroy. There is tons of public land, and not that many people.  I don't see a bunch of deer though. But beutiful scenery.

Also give the NE a try. This is where you will find bigger WT. Also it's open to any WT buck.

lots of hunters if you mean road hunters, we hunted that unit 2 years in a row on public land and never saw a hunter ever where we were. We hiked up from the grande ronde river, super steep, advice bring a pack and stay once on top and in.Lots of bucks, saw a couple decent ones, nothing jaw dropping

I've done a lot of hiking in there for sheep.  What Shane said is 100 percent on.  Stay in there once you are in.  There are some decent bucks but I've never seen anything over 165"  If you can get someone to drop you off along the Snake River then you can get away from some crowds.  Good luck.
