Title: Blacktail Special Permit Tag
Post by: kglacken on March 07, 2012, 11:43:53 AM: I know some people might not want to reveal the tags they put in for, but I was wondering what are some good quality blacktail tags? I have a few points and am willing to do some scouting too but I would like some ideas too. I would love to draw the extended tag for the skook, but other than that i dont know where to look. Any advice would be great!

But with an OC tag you can hunt the late season. I have hunted blacktails here and there. The one thing I have always found with them is this.

Find the nastiest, brushiest hell hole you can find. These mature blacktails are smart and have played the game many times over.

In my mind you don't need a special permit, you need to hunt harder and go in farther than most people do.

Spent summers scouting almost every weekend, setting tree stands, trail cams, spent countless hours in my stands, through sun snow rain. Ive biked behind locked gates. Busted my a$$ through the brush. I hunted both archery seasons last year, modern season, and I got a shot at one decent buck, but passed hoping I would get a chance at a better buck. I have done my homework, its frustrating but I havent and wont quit hunting the areas around my home, but I was just wondering what tags generally produce better genetics and better chances at a buck. One of the problems around here is pressure, and if I could draw a tag for an area with less pressure, the odds would only increase.

The tags that start nov 1st and end around the 21st are ok as you get more time to hunt the rut but they are nothing compared to the late mulie and whitetail hunts. Having the blacktail tags as a quality tag is a joke, but if I had 1-2 points I may try to put in for one close to home.

The biggest bucks I see every year are during the first week of November. Also, there are a lot more hunters out in the woods screwing things up for you during the permit dates.

Correct.
The "quality" portion for BT hunts is due to a longer season and fewer hunters according to F&W.

Post by: Tbar on March 07, 2012, 11:02:28 PM: Sauk is ok gr shed is a real good draw. The last week of October is as good as any permit other than the shed. After about .5 miles into the timber you are usually alone especially midweek.

I think they're all good, but I'd apply for the ones that you are most familiar with or are able to scout the most.

Post by: trophyhunt on March 07, 2012, 11:39:32 PM: If you had a kapowsin pass I'd put in for the mashel, you will only get a couple days though because they close the place down for the elk hunters that draw the permit. You take a chance with little time but it could be a great hunt, if I get lucky enough to draw the elk tag I'm putting my 8 deer points for that tag. Then I can hunt elk and deer in there at the same time.
