Title: Calling bears
Post by: jeff100 on July 27, 2008, 09:18:46 PM: Back in the days of old, I hunted bears over my baits. Twas a time to behold. But such is no more. I'm going to give calling a shot. I have several calls, but the call I'm most interested in trying out next week is a bear cub squall. Anyone ever used a call like this and have any comments they could make?

Also, any tips on calling in general, would be appreciated. I've watched a few videos though, I'm just gonna get out there, and get it done. I'm hoping, this technique will give me an opportunity to see multiple bears, as I hope to have a few to look over before pulling the trigger hopefully on a bruiser in a good color phase.

I spent the day today at the range dialing in my .30-06 and my newly peep sighted Savage Mod 99 in .308. The Savage is gonna be my 'brush' gun, the scoped '06 for the east side. Shot a lot today evaluating reloads for the 06 and have a sore shoulder, but man...I'm stoked...

Post by: tlbradford on July 28, 2008, 10:24:49 AM: I like the cub squall better than any other for calling and seeing bears, however, there is a downside. You will call in a lot more sows than boars. The sows will usually come in without their cubs in tow because they send them up a tree first. Just be careful on what you are pulling the trigger on.

Post by: bearmanric on July 28, 2008, 10:47:52 AM: i like a good Raspy call. i kinda do the cub squall and deer mixed in. i just use my chest lung's put emotion into the call. i also use a Foxpro. have the new open country will be here tomorrow or wed. i will be using fawn, deer elk, and bear sound's on it. i like walnut call's great for sound's. just getting ready to put this english walnut bear call for sale. have fun this weekend. i will aint nothing like being in the wood's. Post by: Machias on July 28, 2008, 12:17:21 PM: I'm with Rick, I like a good loud raspy call. Put a watch out in front of you, because calling pretty much non stop for 45 min to an hour is exhaustive and 20 min in you'll think you've been calling for an hour. Good luck and let us know how you do.

We get a bunch of folks all out in the woods blowing on predator calls and it won't be no time at all and they will not come to a call. Just like guys calling before the season for elk and turkeys, they have no idea the damage they're doing and can't figure out why during the season nothing will come in.

Yeah, that's true enough. But there's sooo many bears. Plus it depends on how many people try this a couple of times and get discouraged when they don't have a bear come in after an hour or two of calling and give up.

I remember when I started baiting bears years ago. I put out my first couple of baits and expected the bears to come marching in. They eventually did, but it took a few weeks and it was a heck of a lot of work before my first bait was hit...

We'll see what happens with the bear calling...

Post by: Machias on July 28, 2008, 03:56:01 PM: I know what you mean I hauled a bunch of stuff into the woods and it was a loooong time before I got a hit. The they started coming in regular and I got deployed to the desert the following week. Next season baiting was outlawed :bash:

I agree. I have often wondered how many people don't set up right, don't call long enough or just plain spook the bears while calling and how it will affect them in the future.
