it should get fun as soon as all the special permits are done.  always get the guys asking for help in areas they've never hunted but drew a bull tag and ask for help because they don't have time to scout.

Might as well get this going.....

So if I draw a certain bear tag I won't have the time to scout much... If at all... I was wondering if somebody could scout their honey hole... I'd prefer at least a couple people to give me the best odds as well as hurry this up... I have things to do you know... Then give me a call when they have a boar of my liking pinned down.... Quality pics would also be a big plus of the boar for aiding me if it's worth the drive....   Thanks in advance everybody!!!!    :chuckle:

The average doesn't really mean a lot though, especially when there are relatively few permits in comparison to the number of applicants.

If you look at the data from last year's draw, you'll see that of those applicants with 3 points, only 4 out of 47 drew Monroe, and 8 out of 58 drew Skagit.

It wasn't much better for those with 4 points:  5 out of 13 drew Monroe and 2 out of 16 drew Skagit.

Title: Re: Spring bear draw results
Post by: stickbuck on March 13, 2012, 03:34:54 PM
I figured I would do my best to add fuel to this thread to keep it going. My buddy showed me the calculation he uses to figure out his odds. I know it is a year behind since these are the only harvest numbers and hunter stats available, but here goes. Since the Monroe unit is the easiest to describe, I will show the math for that one in case there are a few people out there that don't know how to do it. The math is fairly simple but can take a few minutes to add up. First, you need to add up all the applicants by their points. For example, there were 2 applicants with five points. I square their five points and multiply it by the 2 applicants. As seen below, I did that for all of the point categories.

Hunters with 5 points: 5 points squared multiplied by 2 applicants gives me 50.
Hunters with 4 points: 4 points squared multiplied by 6 applicants gives me 96.
Hunters with 3 points: 3 points squared multiplied by 36 applicants gives me 324.
Hunters with 2 points: 2 points squared multiplied by 107 applicants gives me 428.
Hunters with 1 points: 1 points squared multiplied by 222 applicants gives me 222.

I then add up all those numbers on the far right which gives me a number of 1120. I then square my 2 points and divide the squared number of 4 into 1120 and then divide 25(permits for that unit) into that number and that gives me my odds of drawing that permit. Not pretty, but a 1 in 11.2 chance of getting drawn if the permit applicants are similar. I know those applicant numbers won't be the same, but they should be close enough. I hope that was easy to understand.

Title: Re: Spring bear draw results
Post by: stickbuck on March 13, 2012, 04:17:44 PM
For my calculation listed below, I used the point numbers from the 2010 harvest reports. When I use the 2011 point distribution by hunt choice, I come up with a 1 in 14 shot. Wow, that is depressing!!! Not to deviate from the topic, but at least it is better than my 1 in 397 shot of drawing a moose tag.  :chuckle:
Title: Re: Spring bear draw results
Post by: Ridgerunner on March 13, 2012, 04:31:21 PM
calculating odds will just give a guy a general idea of what approximate odds are, I don't think you can really predict with 100% certainty, however it is nice to know relative odds.

True this is a bear thread but a lot of people have mentioned that they will go ling fishing if not drawn, so it's ok. I have been trying to get a trip scheduled to Neah Bay for quite some time. I have a boat also, so whoever doesn't get drawn and wants to go to Neah Bay ling/seabass fishing, let's do it! Oh who am I to discriminate, even if you get drawn you can go. Let's go 14 pages!

Although it wasn't Spring bear, I had to pass on a nice sow and a good sized cub last year also. I was going to fill both tags and conditions were perfect until the sow turned and took a few steps back and a little squealer jumped up on a log....  :yike: blew my plans for a double whammy right out of the water. I decided to let all 3 go. I know the Hood they live in and I will visit again this year.

That's what I was thinking it jogged the brain when I saw that picture. My dad was bear hunting in Canada and he had a nice mid sized, pretty as can be sow that would wait for him to get out of the tree and try and grab him. He shot to scare her off 2 times. The first morning and the first night. He asked the guide and he said she had her cubs get ate by a boar and she was on a war path. My dad did not want to shoot her but on the 2nd morning he just got into the tree and she decided she was going to climb up and get him. Not a wise choice for her! He stuck the barrel down the tree and she got to about 1' away and he ripped her right off the tree :bash: Some are just plain dangerous! My dad was in great shape and was fast. What could of happened with someone else not so quick walking into the stand. He had 2 tags anyways and shot a toad on the 3rd day.

The WDFW budget and staff have been cut.  It's the excuse for the drawing taking so long.  They hope that delaying the drawing will make you upset enough to allow them to raise taxes and fees and permits and stamps and licenses.  Olympia uses this strategy with all the departments that people care about.  It will be interesting to hear their explanation (if they give one).

Why should they provide an explanation? It says right in the regulations that results for spring bear will be available online "by the end of March".

So they still have a full two weeks to get the results posted. No explanation required unless results come out in April.

Bob, you and I both know how the state works. Starts at one desk...sits for two weeks....moves to the next desk....sits for two weeks..........

A bunch of pages ago we were talking about ling cod fishing and a Neah Bay trip. I am booked on the Slammer in Westport Sunday May 27 with my girlfriend and a couple of other friends. Last I checked there were still 15 open spots. You are all welcome to join us weather you draw a tag or not. If you draw, you can brag about your success. If not you can piss and moan about how unfair the draw system is. Either way I'll share my bear sausage with you. Let's fill up the boat with Hunt wa members. We can plan a Neah Bay trip while we're out there.

Since they don't want to draw the spring bear permits I might as well try to side track this thread...What are they charging for fishing trip?

Way to jump on board trophyhunt. $120 for 2 lings and 10 sea bass. It's a good time and yes, it provides a distraction from the drawing! :chuckle:

If anyone has an extra set of gear, I might just go fishing. Since I moved back up here from California I have focused more on hunting than fishing so I don't really know what all I would need to be successful around here.

I just called the Kapowsin Forest office.  They said that they get a list of the spring bear draw from the State and they sell 2 month permits just for spring bear for $100.  That's a significant break from the $350.00 for the general access permit.  She said that it is usually 2 weeks from the draw before they get the list.

How typical is it to draw your 2-3 choice over the first?

It all depends on your choices and what order you put them in. If you put them in order from hardest to draw, to easiest, then you'd be more likely to draw your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice.

All 4 were equal, so I guess all were the same.  I drew my 4th choice.  The only unit I have not stepped a foot in.  It's going to be challenging but fun.  I'm for sure looking forward to it.  Sure is a lot different than South Carolina where I am used to hunting.

Thanks! Good luck to you as well!!! You know me I will do a good write up for the hunt. I only got to hunt a little bit last year before I tagged my dandy bear. I will be looking for a color or big black again

You going to hire a guide again?

Nope never hired a guide for any bear hunts yet  Going to spend so time with my friend again. I helped him he has helped me and we have become good friends. He just got to pack out the bear with me last year. I hunted alone, he had to work :chuckle:

Same for us.  The wife and I both had 4 points and put in seperately to try to avoid this, but we both drew Kapowsin tags.

Congrats. You will not get flamed for that. If your first post was wanting info you would get flamed :chuckle: You are just fine!

Pretty cool! Looks like so far 5 of the 20 tags for that unit are going to members :IBCOOL: I got skagit again for the 2ND year in a row! Very low chances of having that happen but the bear gods love me!!!

Can't wait!!! I got to load up some ammo for the black widow :IBCOOL: Should be a much better year. Most ate tags there last year because of the weather. Hope to get me a ling this year as well!!!! Weather was bad last year and the boat was not working so we did not chase them last year.

make sure you know where the camping spots are before you spend 300 bucks on that.  i have checked out most of them and if you live within 40 miles or so of the gate or dont plan on camping alot other than bear season i would pass it up. from what i have seen its just gravel lots and they really are not very deep in there  :twocents:

I shot mine with my sako 300 win mag last year. I have shot all my bears with that gun. I think the black widow "my 34owby" will come out and play this year. I will take my bow as well. That country is tuff for bowhunting from what I have been in it!

It's still hunting last year only 6 of the 20 people who drew tags shot a bear and reported it! It is still a hunt. Last year the weather was very poor. I saw only 2 bears in 2 days I spent in that area.

No idea on that. I am not from the area and do not know of the main line. There is a few members on here that live up there that might be able to tell you.

I called and spoke to someone at the office after the season was over. I think there was 5 or 6 of us members that had tags last year and I was the only one to shoot one there. So I do not find it hard to think that only 6 of the 20 killed bears.

I have been up there for the nooksack hunt do you know if they give out access to the main line, for this hunt or is it still walk in.

The WDFW will contact you and you get a key from the dnr. You have to pick it up in person in sedro Woolley and give like a 100 deposit which is not cashed if you turn in the key. I drew last year and went quite a few times. Didn't see hardly any sign until the last 10 days. Saw a lot of sign the last week and the last day went in the morning and got into places that were terrorized by bears. Went back home, fell asleep and barely made it back before dark. Never saw one until my drive out in the dark the last day of the season. I now hate all of you who drew and am now giving you the silent treatment.

Nada.  Last time I drew any special hunt tag was 2003, I figure the bad luck must be coming to a end soon.  Until then Idaho continues to get my non-resident fee.

I drew North Skagit!  First time drawing a tag! I guess it time to start scouting....I don't know this area.  Made it my first choice as it is closer to home. I live in Kent.  Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

UGHHHHHHHH  Lots of scouting once you get the map of the area,  you get the key from the DNR in Sedro, $100 deposit.

I appreciate any help that you can give me but am a little curious on why there is no pictures on your page??? I notice that you are on here everyday and are always posting or commenting on hunting topics. Did you kill a bear last year? What about elk and deer? Now it is a waiting game to see if the roads clear of snow before the end of the season.
When I drew Wenaha, I could not get there due to roads closed because of snow.
Check the trail going in from the south. It is the first to open.

I got drawn for spring bear in 2000 for the Blue Creek unit as did my brother. He took a big boar but I did not fill my tag despite hunting hard. I drew Wenaha in 2001 and took my biggest bear to date, a 13 year old boar. I drew Blue Creek in 2005 and took a 12 year old boar. I drew Dayton in 2007 and took a 7 year old boar. I drew Dayton in 2010 but did not fill my tag. Now I am again going to be hunting Dayton this spring. I do not know why but I have had great luck drawing spring bear. Please do not hate me  :chuckle:

When I was drawn for Monroe, I had to go pick up the packets in Sedro wooley (drop off my refundable 100 dollar check), along with the key to the gates from WDFW. Then, I had to swing by the loggin companies and pick up the combo to the locks. Not sure if they have changed it or not.  :dunno:
