Title: Savage 111 Long Range Hunter
Post by: buckfvr on March 09, 2012, 03:17:37 PM
Anyone know the true barrel conture, and nominal dimension at the muzzle ? Also, I've herd both ways, but is the barrel length of 26 inches include the brake, or is it a genuine 26in tube with a brake on the end ??? I have looked over their web page a zillion times, so not looking to be steered there.

I have the 111 LRH in 6.5x284 Norma

I cannot answer the contour or nominal dimension question.. but as for the length... with the brake closed, it is 26" ...with it open, it is 25 1/2".

Great rifle! Still learning what load is PRIME for it.. but so far I am getting rough MOA numbers with 130 Berger VLDs and IMR 7828 SSC.

I think you will only find the contour and dimensions by calling Savage up on the phone.

If you you read any of the studies done by Charlie sisk (famous smith) or frank green (famous barrel maker) you will find thatvbarrel length is not much in velocity determination. The diff between 28" and 20" was around 150fps.

Are you experiencing a different point of impact with  the brake closed versus open ?  I have read some not so good reviews over on Long Range Hunting , and was just curious of barrel length because the 116fhss with the 24" barrels would be of the same sporter magnum contour which I believe is the same on the 111LRH.  If not , the next heavier contour they list , is the varmint contour, which I think is on the model 110 Predator Hunter Max 1.

I am thinking the 7mm Rem mag shooting Hornadays' 154gr Interbonds....picks up a bit over the 130gr in 6.5 .

Are you thinking for long range target,  or hunting ?  I am thinking hunting  ( mainly deer ), but I want a 500 yard shot to be slam dunk given the right conditions...not a hail mary.

As far as velocity difference between 28 and 20" tubes.....other factors enter that equation like caliber, propellant, twist required for specific weight projectile...etc.  As in where my thoughts are 7mm mag.....with a 20" tube, there would be unacceptable muzzle flash, where as a 24 or 26" tube would not be nearly as bad.  Thats more what Im looking at.

Well, to be honest, I have yet to shoot it with the brake open! I usually shoot a 300 RUM and 300 WSM.. by comparison the Norma is VERY tame so I have no need right now to open it up. AND.. I have not dived into it as much as I would like to to really learn what it likes.

My goal in getting this rifle in THIS caliber, 6.5x284 Norma, was to have a deer/antelope rifle... since I already have plenty of 30 cals at home that is what I got it for. That and its become super popular for long range as the BC's that these bullets offer is pretty spectacular.

It sounds like to me that you are looking for an all around long range gun for bigger and smaller game. My advice as you mentioned is to go with the 7mm.. you can go all the way up to 180 grain bullets and down to 100 grain bullets too.

If I go the way of the 6.5, I was looking at the Predator Hunter Max...no brake, actual 24 in varmint contour fluted barrel, thinking this may be a better barrel overall than the one on the 111LRH.   Karsten cheeck pads are available for internet purchase, and that would get the 110 better in accommodating a larger objective scope.  Just doing alot of thinking.....

If you have any interest in a Greg tannel of gre-tan rifles built 6.5-06 700 barreled action, I have one in the shop I would sell for $650 low round count and a seekins 20moa bedded base in black cerakote. It will shoot into the .3's every day......just to complicate things.
