dave ya need me to tube you out :chuckle:
-
Jn the first picture it looks like there is a stick in the trap along with your hand. What is the reason for this?
-
Cause he didn't want to break his hand lol :chuckle:
-
looks like he's using the stick to get his hand out :tup:With the trap closed with his hand in it probably wouldnt be that easy to open the trap up.
-
I think most people would be in a little bit bigger hurry to get out of the traps. You're just tougher than the average beaver!
-
I'm just curious as to why the stick is there, not trying to start something. Just curious.
-
The stick was to get my hand out of the trap,,,,,, Then I decided to take the picture,,
-
Did you let the traps snap shut or just open them up enough to slide your hand in them. The initial trauma from the trap snapping is what would cause the most trauma.
In no way shape or form am I against trapping I'm just curious.
I have allot of respect for you guys.

Seems kind of fitting that the only guy on here named Hannibal is also the only guy on here posting pics of himself in his own traps.... :dunno: Any chance you posted a pic of yourself dragging a chain from your junk in the Trail Cam section?? :chuckle:

Traps are made to catch animals so we can kill them. Aren't some traps set so that when an animal is caught the trap runs down a one way line so the animal drowns?......Of course you wouldn't want a trap to mangle a hide making it worth less money.... Probably best if they drown too, then you don't have to shoot them or risk damage to the hide by dispatching the critter?

I wonder just how many of us are members of the "330 club"? I can tell you it's a humbling experience walking up to the house with both thumbs in a 330 and asking for help getting out. Fortunately it was my own house and my boys know better than to laugh at me. They tried real hard to keep a straight face.

HaHa now that is funny, Or would be if hadn't happened to me to. Luckily I wasn't far from home when it happened.

Don't want damage to the fur. That's understandable. We had buckets full of traps grandpa used to set around the turkey farm between the hot wire and outter fence. Barn cats were the primary target as I mentioned in the turkey thread.

:chuckle: There is probably a bit of difference between a fox/ coyotes distal tib/fib vs a human finger. Last I checked a human does not have quite the fur a fox/coyote has, hence leaving only flesh and bone to whack. :chuckle: And, of course everyone knows that foot holds dont break bones!

Fototholds are nothing......330's though. Holy crap

foot holds are safe traps, and the same traps used to catch and release fox and other critters for studies..Big ass Lying myth that they are bad traps..

Two of my friends just booked a trip with Babine Lake Outfitters. He's hunted bear with them in the past. We had dinner at my friends house with the guide from Babine after he got packed up at the Sportsman show. They have 100% freeze up. He said many of the animals caught on his trap line are frozen in the morning. They've been hammering the wolves. The more they take, the more show up.

I think trapping should be legal. BUT i would imagine your bones are a little bigger than that of a beaver.

here is how hard the legholds are on animals
-
They only time you find an animal in a trap with a broken bone is when a small animal like a skunk or muskrat gets in a #2 or #3. Never had a beaver with a broken bone, ever, never had a fox or a coyote with a broken bone. Only animals I've ever had with a broken bone was skunks and a muskrats.

Only if they are set up to kill, lots of animals are just fine when caught with a snare. Most domestic dogs caught with a snare are just fine when found because they have already been taught about restraint around their necks.
-
makes sense. He was showing me the 2011-12 winter trap line pictures...awesome to say the least. I didn't ask but, noticed almost all were frozen. Had some pictures of a group ice fishing on the lake with 4 wolves slowly walking in towards them out of curiousity. What the wolves didn't know was that one guy in the party still had his wolf tag......fur and fins on that afternoon... Sort of scary they'd approach a group of people on the lake fishing in a hole.

HAHA- you haven't seen my pups on a lead!! :) How do the snare triggers work? Are they more lethal?

Sorry I can't comment on them. I've never used them, seen them or been around anyone who used them. Snares can be set up to easily hang what ever you catch, but there are plenty of animsla trapped in snares that are not hurt.

This topic made nme remember getting my are in a 330 conibear when I was about 16. I was setting in a runway and after pulling the safety clip off decided to change something, oops, that 330 did not feel good. Scared me more than anything...LOL
But it didn't break any bones and I was able to get it off myself with a little effort.

Snares are just like a noose set in a trail. The forward motion of the animal is what closes them. Whether they are lethal or not largely depends on the snare lock. Some locks when pulled tight will not choke a dog because they relax when the dog stops pulling. Those are refered to as relaxing locks. Some locks come with a spring on them too hold the snare tight so that the animal chokes down quick. Some states have regulations that require the use of what they call cable restraints. Those are a relaxing lock with a few additional rules as to where they can be set to avoid lethal catches. Examples of places a relaxing lock snare being in a lethal location would be setting on a fence or in an entanglement situation.
In addition many states now require breakaway devices so that a larger animal such as a deer will release its self if caught. Some also require deer stops which keep the loop from closing to a small enough loop to hold onto a deers foot.
The wolf snares in ID have a device that keeps elk and deer out by sheering the snare out of the trail if a large animal pushes through.
In addition to these there are power snares with a killing spring on them that is released when an animal pulls on the snare. They are very lethal and have been illegal in WA since I strarted trapping in 69.
I doubt that any of these snares would harm a dog if the owner was present to remove the snare with the possible exception of the power snares.
I see some of the animal rights groups making a big stink about snares especially in MT. They are trying to convince the public they are always lethal and you need to carry a set of cable cutters to save your dog if caught
The whole thing is absurd. If the owner is present all they have to do is back the lock up even with the lethal snares.
Dogs that are trained to lead will not choke in my experience. I've caught a few dogs in my day and the only one I ever killed was a wild dog. Actually two out of the same pack. One in a snare and one in a trap. Believe me these were not friendly dogs. The one, I thought was going to eat me.

I think we need to outlaw Philips screw dits,,,,,,,,, They hurt more then the Biggest trap............

Now your startin to scare the kids, Hannibal.

Back when my folks were teaching hunter education out east one of the instructor used to put his hands in all kinds of traps during the trapping portion to demonstrate that they are not bone breaking torture devices. I've been snapped a few times and the worst thing that happens is you get skin between the trap and the spring and get some gnarly blood blisters. I have also seen raccoons with just a couple little fingers caught in a trap and they weren't broken. I wish I had places to trap and someone out here to show me more about it. I never got seriously into trapping but liked the little I did. Just needed someone to show me the ropes.
-
Humptulips beat me to it again :) I was planning on posting everything about snares he already has, although I doubt I would have been as thorough! I've used snares quite a bit in another state, (not a relaxing lock either) and often had to dispatch coyotes in them. As for traps, I'm in the #330 club, #110 club, and the #2 and #3 foothold clubs. Still have all my digits.

Anyone a member of the Hancock club? Seriously these live traps are more dangerous than any body gripping trap! :chuckle:
-
LOL! Dont get me around one of those when I'm drinking.
Thanks for the laugh Rufus.
