My buddy shot a doe a couple years back in the archery season, on our way to retrieve it he slipped and dislocated his shoulder. We went down to the hospital, then went back up the hill about three hours later to get his deer. We found it half eaten. A bear had eaten it, both hind quarters and half way up the backstrap was gone! We know that is was a bear because of the size of it droppings, or should be say cow pies. The diameter on the turds was bigger than a beer can!!!!!!!! This bear ended up being 425 pounds, the only reason that I know is we shot it that night. A nice Cinnamon colored bear. I would say you are looking at about a 140 - 200 pound animal.

What size round is that?  A .50BMG or a .17?  I would guess around 100 lbs.

I don't have a guess on the size of the bear..............but I'd guess that the cartridge is a 30-06?

im not saying its not a bear or that what you seeing isnt bear scat, but yotes eat berrys too. i always thought i was seeing tons of small bear scat until a few years ago, it can be a little deciving

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been my experience that bear scat is not a consistent indicator of bear size.  I've seen some HUGE piles left by small bears...and I've seen some puny droppings left by tanks.

The size of scat depends more so upon what the bear is eating, how much it's eating, and how frequently it defecates - not to mention the sheer size of the bear's @sshole.

But like I said...correct me if I'm wrong.

Good point.  He should check for hair.

It isn't really the size of the piles, but rather the diameter of the scat if you were to take a cross section.  It is not a reliable indicator of bear size in itself, but is true often enough that big poop equals big bear.

Sorry I wasn't more clear.  I was actually referring to the diameter, and my experience is still the same.

Think of humans and scat diameter.  It might give you a broad differentiation between a child and an adult, but differentiation within groups is pretty much unpredictable.  More often than not, just because the size of the body increases, the diameter of the anus remains the same once the person (or bear) reaches adulthood.  And even then, the anus is expandable, producing different size scat at different times depending, again, what is eaten, how much, and how often the person (bear) defecates.

What you have said is entirely true, and for the very reasons you listed, is why big scat is often (not always) related to a big bear.  Big bears need to eat a lot of food, and typically this results in big scat.  Can this differentiate between a 150 and 250 lb bear, no.  Can it differentiate between a sub adult and a mature bear, yes usually, in my experience.  Throwing out that wild ass guess earlier probably ruined my credibility, it was meant more in fun than in seriousness.

I believe that size matters. That said, I can't believe I'm sitting here waiting for a picture of bear *censored*e to pull up so I can study it. Hunting season needs to get hear fast. I'm getting way to bored.  :P

Dink bear.  Up on POW (prince of wales, AK) you will see purple piles that appear to have been extruded from a coke can.  Mind blowing bung holes on big bears!!  Small diameter = small bear.
