Yeah man, it's pretty fun at a NASCAR race. I have been to Pheonix 3 times. There is nothing on the planet as loud as 40 some cars at the start with open headers. I want to go to Daytona or Talledega next.

Be a lot more interesting if they would take a few right turns every now and then, my old man watches it religiously.  Hope you have fun and the weather cooperates.

Actually I don't even like the races NASCAR does on the road courses.  I like the side by side, banging on each other races.  Road courses with their right and left turns are usually single file with passing only taking place in a couple of turns, not my favorite type of race.  ;)

That has got to be the best track to watch a race.  Lots of bumpin and grinding.  (no not that kind)

I've been to Bristol, Richmond, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Fontana, Martinsville, Dover, Loudon, Texas, Talladega, Daytona.

Bristol is by far the best place to watch a race from the stands because you are so close and on top of everything.

Talladega and Dayton are by far the worst because you can't see alot, you get way better view of the races watching TV.  But they are both a great "experience".

I was lucky enough in 06 to get to go to Daytona for the AMA 200 motorcycle race. I was the gas man on the pit crew. We qulified and started 73rd. After 2 1/2 hours we finished 16th. It is quite an experience to roll through the tunnel at Daytona and go into the infield. To be on pit row was cool also. I have never been to a short track for NASCAR. It's like racing in a salad bowl.

Damn lucky *censored* Machias.  That is a track on my bucket list.  Been too Sears Point 2001 and 2002 and Vegas in 2002.  The only reason I went to Sear Point both years was because I got free tickets and I lived near the track.  My daughter, son-in-law and grand daughter are stationed down in Texas so hoping to get to see one of the two races there and of course visit them

Best race at Bristol ever- When they covered it in dirt and race the World of Outlaws on it! They were turning lap times almost 10 seconds faster than NASCAR. On dirt!  8)

I have never seen a NASCAR race, oval racing is pretty boring.
I did work timing/scoring for USAC when they used to run the Indy 500.  I was there for rookie orientation (like a hall of fame list of coaches), time trials and race day.
Nothing like being able to touch the hot cars.
I still prefer road racing and have been lucky enough to be course worker for lots of amateur (SCCA, Skip Barber) and pro races and some of the most beautiful tracks in the country.
At the old Brooklyn, Michigan track the fencing hung out over the racing surface and youcould literally look straight down at the cars when they were on the outside line.
Over 200mph and 5 feet below your face.
Awesome.

I don't watch for the crashes.  Indy cars are no fun to watch now that is boring.  Road courses you can only pass in certain areas and it is all pretty much single file.  They don't race side by side they even have to have a push to pass.  If you have never watched a NASCAR race watch this weekend or goto a race.

Spent 10 years overseas.  There's two kinds of racing....Formula 1 and Rally.  There were a few others that had quite a bit of coverage too.  Semi truck racing, off road hill climb obstacle course, motorcycle and motorcycle hill climbing.

Used to watch quite a bit of racing because it was one of the few things that you didn't need to speak the language to understand what was going on.

If I had to pick one between F1, Rally and NASCAR it would be Rally racing.

If I'm not doing anything and NASCAR is on I'll watch it.  I may get up and take care of some quick chores and come back to it or flip the channel for a bit.  But I won't sit and watch from pre to post race.

If you want to see some good Sprint Car racing I would head down to Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon for either ASCS or Outlaws...Hands down the best track closest to Washington. Knoxville, IA is second to none for Nationals but its a bit of a drive...haha

We've ran Cottage Grove a few time as well as a few other tracks in Oregon (Madras, won the A-main there), WA, ID, and Alberta, Canada.

I used to chase/spectate rallys in the mid eighties when the Gruppe B (killer B's) were still running.
Great stuff.

hate to bring up an old thread but was looking around & found this.
Was it every thing its supposed to be? Could you hear afterwords ?
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: Machias on May 15, 2012, 07:48:10 PM
It was great, but half the stands were empty.  They are reconfiguring the track for the Aug night race.  Should be more crashes, they think that will bring the fans back.  Used to you could not get a ticket for Bristol, but the past few years attendance has been steadily declining.  I really enjoyed it.  Had to run up top at the first caution and buy ear plugs.  It literally hurt!!  :)  I'll be back there in Aug so I'll probably go to that race as well.
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: gaddy on May 15, 2012, 08:15:39 PM
awsome, never been there. saw an interview where the owner is hoping after the reconfiguration & raceing gets back to the way it used to be that it will fill up again.

I hope so.  I'm moving to VA in the next couple of months, I looked at all the tracks within a few hours drive.  I'll be attending each one....yehaw!  :)
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: Russ McDonald on May 16, 2012, 11:34:52 AM
It is stupid that fans are watching for the crashes on not the good racing.  I think Bristol is much better then it used to be.  Fans not showing up is the economy not how the racing is.  Plus you get much better coverage on TV then being there.  You just don't have the commercials when you are there.
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: Machias on May 16, 2012, 12:36:22 PM
I gotta tell you most of the fans have been staying away because of the new style, they took a survey and it was overwhelming the amount of folks who hated the new style.
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: Russ McDonald on May 16, 2012, 12:42:46 PM
I enjoy racing...what those fans are wanting it the fights in the pits....the other tracks are having it now.  I guess there is just not a happy medium.  That is what Burton Smith is hoping for.
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: gaddy on May 16, 2012, 12:51:41 PM
rubbins racein. Most true fans dont go or watch just for the wrecks but they are a biproduct of heavy cars traveling at a high rate of speed, inches apart with each driver trying to beat the other for an extended period of time. one brain fart or malfunction & SMASH-CRASH-BOOM. Ahh, the excitement.
& yes you get more coverage on tv but you miss out on the noise, the smells, crowds ect..

I can't really put my finger on one isolated thing that keeps me away. Just a combination of changes that made the whole atmosphere of NASCAR too clean. I lost interest shortly after Winston was dropped as the cup sponsor. Not that Winston sponsorship had anything to do with my loss of interest, that was just the time frame when the changes started to make me less interested. I think the new sleek, clean, refined image of NASCAR as a whole keeps me away.

Regarding the crashes and fighting. No I do not want to see fighting and multi car pileups at every race. OK, maybe every other race.  :chuckle:  What I would rather see is more than a sticker on the grill separating the vehicle "manufacturers". Maybe NASCAR should look at what their own acronym stands for and put a little more stock cars in stock car racing. I would pay good money to go see a NASCAR race between cars pulled off the assembly line with the only improvements being those regarding safety. Not only has NASCAR's regulations and purpose built cars made racing less interesting, it has taken away a great deal of competitiveness between the automotive manufacturers and their production line sports cars. Can you imagine the improvements in production cars today if they would have been racing side by side for the past 30 years?

Sorry Machias, with all the talk about how NASCAR is screwing the pooch, I forgot to say I hope you had a great time at Bristol.  :hello:  My favorite track of all time.
Title: Re: NASCAR
Post by: Russ McDonald on May 16, 2012, 01:59:51 PM
Here is the reason why they went to similar cars.  When the cars had distiction between manufactures one manufacture would whine that the other manufacture had an advantage and NASCAR had to change the rules.  For example Ford would have a areo advantage over Chevy so NASCAR would make a change for the areo package on Chevy to help.  The rumor has it that since the Nation Wide series went to a more manufacture distiction in their cars that the cup series may go to that too.  I always figured that is one manufacture had an advantage over another manufacture the crews need to figure out to make their cars better.  That is what they pay the engineers and crew chiefs the big money.  All these changes really started after Dale Sr. died in the crash at Daytona too.

I still have Bristol on my bucket list.

The way it used to be is win on Sunday and sell on Monday.  I will always be a fan I just enjoy watching racing at least stock car.  If it is open wheel it has to be on dirt.  I grew up in north east Minnesota watching my dad and uncle race on a dirt track there.  They raced against guys like Dick Trickle and Red Farmer.  Anyone go to any local tracks here.  I want to go to the Monroe track and Skagit.

cool pic's

Look forward to having some Nascar talk with you guys

I've just been watching it for the last 10 years. So I'm fairly new to the sport.

Also enjoy going to the dirt tracks at Grays Harbor and Skagit and watching the sprints run.

Who's your racer(s)

I pull for Kasey Kahne since he is a local guy and Tony Stewart & Kyle Bush.
