All bears and all 3 videos are from the Mt. Baker Wilderness.
-
:yike:Holy crap Shanevg! Awesome. What were the measurments for the bear, 12th from the bottom? Looks like a pig of a skull on that beast.
-
I'm assuming you're talking about the one laying on his back. He scored just over 20 if I recall correctly.
The one with the blood on the rock is actually a very misleading bear. She scored maybe 16" but her tooth age came back at 19 years old! :yike:
-
WOW! Nice bears! Holy s**t you kill alot!
-
That's a heck of a pile of bears! Congrats, Shane!
-
Thanks Hirshey. Youre quite the little tank under all that back pack, crawling cross the creek! Im not sure if I could even do that!
:chuckle: Well thanks, I tried... it was about 8 miles each direction, and we made it out the same day I harvested him so I consider that successful. I liked that Eberlestock but am excited to try out a Kuiu pack during scouting and see if it works a little nicer for my small frame. I am beginning to think that any pack will give you hot spots with that much weight on them, though.
-
shanevg that was really good and fun to watch good job.

Also, I voted for you (Shane) and your friend on the Cabela's hunt give-away thing.. when will you hear about that?

Thanks Hirshey!

Please vote again, you can vote once per day through the end of the month. I assume we will find out shortly thereafter. :)
-
I just voted for you guys too. I'll keep doing it. It looks like to me, that you are both dedicated hunters, and push each other to hunt harder. Your video's are enjoyable to watch too. Good luck, and keep posting videos. Maybe some more high country Blacktails. :)

Thanks! We do have fun pushing eachother to the limit. Our goal this year is a nice alpine blacktail with our bows.

Headhunter that's a great Oregon buck.
Hirshey good job on yours looks like you did it right. How did the rest of your shed season go after I bumped into you on the hill?

Thanks, sir! The season is still going... I'll be out this weekend for one last go at the muleys, then its down full time in the blues. Unfortunately a lot of my spots this season got scooped by people on snowmobiles. :( Even a ridgeline I usually do really well on in the area I bumped into you (which you know shouldn't have snowmobiles) had tracks almost down to the road from the top. I'm sitting at around 10 horns.. which, isn't really that great for 10+ days of trekking. My mom, however, is slaying it! :) She even has one of the sides of an animal I took some photos of...

Thanks: cant wait for this year i got a score to settle with a couple of real giants that gave me the slip last year up high.

Pic was from 2010. Definately got some excercise on this one. Got him late afternoon and had a long pack to basecamp in the dark by headlamp and stumbled into camp just before midnight. I figure if I'm tired and sore at the end of the hunt it's a good hunt.
-
2010 in the BOB Marshall Wilderness. 28 miles to base camp and another 7 miles to spike camp with horses of course.
killed the buck on the 18th of sept and the bull on the 24th of sept.
-
that bull is NICE!
-
Hey Elkpack,
nice buck, that country looks real familiar, looks like the middle fork country. The first two are from 09, and the last one is from 07.

WHAT A GREAT THREAD. I am very much enjoying the photos!

Ya, the guy with the orange shirt, blood on the rock. Wow..only a 16! I cant believe it! Gorgeous bear regardless though. Thanks~
-
John you are a beast!
-
you got shots to add bone?
Just about every critter I have ever killed has been in the backcountry, from Moose, to deer to elk to bear.

I'll tell you that bear was built like a monster. We thought she was a huge boar when we first saw her. She was super boxy and like I said really old. 18 if I recall correctly.

OK I have a guestion, Is there anyone that treks up toward the high units during the opening of regular season and looks for holding areas or the pockets of deer if the weather has started hitting up high?
-
Mine was a general rifle hunt Tommy H.
-
Mine was a general rifle hunt Tommy H.
 I always wondered about that. nice buck
-
400, the only thing better than the high hunt in september is the same hunt in october. You just have to be WAY more prepared for nasty weather. The bucks will timber up when that snow blows in, so it's a different game.
Some great bucks on here!
-
wifes elk
-
A muzzy elk? Am I seeing that correctly?
Congrats! :IBCOOL: Love seeing that!
-
a couple more- Mule deer in the Cascades and Elk in NE.
-
yeah- she is quite the muzzleloader hunter!! This elk was not really in the backcountry, she got him 300 yards from our house. We live in the boonies, but not quite the backcountry! :)
-
great thread, and thanks for the motivation to get my butt out there and into the gym.....
-
Congrats on some fabulous animals! Love the scar on the bridge of that buck's snout!
-
This thread is awesome!
Here is one from MT last year
-
Have a pro with you or what. Thats about perfect Alwine.
I wish I could have had someone with me to take a pic of my buck 25-30 feet in the air in the top of a tree, with me standing on the overhang above it looking down. I think it would have been the neatest field photo of all.
-
pretty good pic Alwine.....
-
nice buck and pic!!!

Here is a backcountry buck he is a dink but he was living up high.

Just remember any deer is a good deer in the back country!!
-
pretty good pic Alwine.....
Thanks,
This is what we were actually up there for.
My buck was just a bonus!
-
Great Pic's! Looks like a great time! A Gal at work drew an Enchantments hike permit for the second year in a row. Hope to get a report on any deer/goat activity up there!
Having done a one day thru hike up there, the deer population is not so good, but there are lots of goats running around. I take it you are talking photo taking. As hunting would not be an option up there.
-
  Two thumbs up on the new additions... bullchaser, that's some gorgeous country!
-
Great Pictures everyone.
I have a story relating to this thread. I was approached by a guy at the gym this morning (I don’t know him real well, but he knows I am on the site quite often and hunt the backcountry, he also commented on the post I made a few days ago in the “high hunt permit” thread). He asked if I had seen the Backcountry Trophies post. I informed him that I had looked at it. He then goes on to tell me that he found where Hirshey killed her buck at and where 75johndeere took his camp picture from. He then went on to tell me that he was going to work on thunt’s photo tonight.
I didn’t believe him and asked him where they were at. After a little while he reluctantly told me exactly where both pictures were taken (I already knew where these photos were taken at). Him and his buddies are already planning scouting trips to these locations this summer. I just want to caution people that post pictures with scenery in the background that there are people that are willing take your spot. It was evident after talking with him and asking why he would want to “steal” someone’s spot he is in it for the instant gratification of shooting a buck. He isn’t the type that cares about the hard work and effort that goes into finding these spots (most of us find this the fun part).
Just a caution when posting pictures of your favorite spots. It really is unfortunate. Bye the way I hope he reads this post and reconsiders.
-
Unbelievable. Some people care less about the hunt than they do the kill or the antlers. It's shameful. :(

Very well said!
I have had a bunch of people recognize the peak in the background of the picture I posted.
If it was a spot I was planning on returning to it wouldn't be floating around the internet ;)
I almost died the day we packed my deer and that goat out and I don't plan on going back anytime soon :bdid:

I just want to caution people that post pictures with scenery in the background that there are people that are willing take your spot. It was evident after talking with him and asking why he would want to “steal” someone’s spot he is in it for the instant gratification of shooting a buck. He isn’t the type that cares about the hard work and effort that goes into finding these spots (most of us find this the fun part).
Just a caution when posting pictures of your favorite spots. It really is unfortunate. Bye the way I hope he reads this post and reconsiders.
Thats sad...

Really Really Sad. Pitiful actually
-
How pathetic! :chuckle: Good thing I have the fortune of knowing how difficult my hike was... If he gets in there even for a scouting trip he's doing pretty well. Too bad I'll still beat him to the buck.
I kind of feel bad for guys like that... "Aww, honey... you need a woman to do your scouting for you? Excuse my french but do I have more lady-balls than you?" :hello:

that's the spirit! The things that photos don't show is the pain and determination ;)

i guess i will have to travel and get a good pic with the space needle in the background! :chuckle: They can have that spot!

And people wonder why there are so many good bucks and bulls that will never show up on here, this is why. Too bad.

I don't mean any offense by this but no matter how hard you feel you've worked or how much sweat you put into getting into a basin or far off drainage...there will likely be someone who will work harder.
-
Seeing hirshey under that pack crossing that creek gives me more respect for her than any honey hole stealing juice monkey.
It will be even better to see hirshey and her mans success next year. Some people... :bash: :dunno:
-
I agree with everyone else. I was pretty pissed off after the conversation. It helped fuel the rest of my workout.

That's awesome, Hirshey! And to answer your question, yes you do.

I knew there was a reason I didnt post that picture right after the season. Its a shame but reality I guess.
-
I am sure I am over reacting, That just makes me mad. Gut wrenching almost. I know it happens. I am sure I am oversensitive as I just worked like 36 hours straight but.......
its the biggest threat to this site.......leaches, worms, maggots, lurkers. People with no integrity.
Makes me want to pull every pic I have ever posted. Sharing with friends is what I like to do. I should know the world is full of parasites. Plagarizing someone elses hard work. Welfare cases. No better than a meth maggot stealing someones sterling silver picture frame to try to achieve that next high.
:(

My sentiments, also.. it is unfortunate that some people that are afraid of a little hard work and scouting can ruin others' ability to share their stories and photos with those that just enjoy sharing in the adventure.

What a lowlife :bash:
-
Man i was just getting into this thread. I say close up some of the history and you close the loop hole. the goof ball probably couldnt get their if he wanted to.
-
Thats unfortunate, Thats why a person has to be selective on their posted pics.
-
There is a lot of low lifes out there that do that kind of crap. That is why I try to get pics of just the animal and the ground. They will never be able to find the spots then. Save the pretty ones for your trophy room and don't post them.
I am suprised you posted that jason I don't think he will like you much anymore after he reads this thread. Good for you  If you know his user name send me a pm if he is a member

PM sent.
Not to worried about him, maybe he will get the point that I truly didn't care for his bushleague tactics.

It's unfortunate this type of behavior exists, although it's nothing new. I witnessed the same thing in a very good deer hunting locale in MT about 13 years ago. A guy put an article in Eastman's with a very prominent landmark in the background, and within a couple of years hunting pressure there went up dramatically.
It's a shame that we have to be careful what photos we share. Never have landmarks in the background, ever. I rarely ever share scenery shots on the internet, unless I just don't care about someone else knowing where it is.
Why some people behave this way is beyond me. I don't hunt for competition with others. The last thing I want to do is race someone to the top of the mountain.

That is the kind of behavior I could expect in a front-country setting... the idea of seeking people OUT in the backcountry is beyond me, however.. especially when the hike is grueling and over 8 miles. :chuckle: Unfortunate but a good lesson, I guess.

This is an awesome topic with some great photos.
Thanks JPhelps for posting your comments. Let's all consider that a positive learning experience, I hope everyone remembers to crop out distinguishable landmarks from their photos.
Hirshey, it's obvious to me the guy must not be much of a hunter if he has to go online trying to identify your spots to go hunting. My best guess is that even if he is on the same mountain as you, that you will probably spot any deer first and be headed out the trail with another fine trophy while that guy is still trying to spot deer.
There's a lot more to being a successful hunter than finding out where someone's honey hole is at, I am guessing the guy must not possess the skills to find deer consistently if he is searching for others hunting spots. :twocents:
-
I have had people try to follow me up as well :bash: Not that hard to loose people in the areas I hunt :chuckle:

I totally agree!
-
The good thing is, the folks that would stoop to this level are usually not smart enough to understand why the spot is good in the first place. If they were, they'd have their own already. So, if you do have to move on, keep it on the down low. Without someone holding their hand and telling them where to go and where to look they won't be able to find these spots.
-
I will add a photo of a decent buck from last fall in Idaho. We packed this single unguided hunter into a drop camp in the bottom of the large drainage. To best hunt this area alone, you need to climb the ridge on one side and glass across to the other side. Once you locate a good buck then you need to come off the ridge and carefully hunt up the other side into the area where your buck is living. It's tall steep country, even though we packed this guy into camp on horses I know he worked for his animal. Not a huge buck but it was his best ever and he was a happy camper.
Now my point, I have packed in groups of 2 to 6 hunters into this same drainage. The good hunters usually at least see some good bucks and many kill good bucks, the guys who are not too good of hunters usually complain that there are not many deer and the country is too steep as we are packing them out.
The guys who see game will likely come back again for another hunt with us, the guys who thought I put them in a poor location I usually never hear from again. :twocents:
Just remember to crop out recognizable features of any pics you post. :twocents:

If he is a member here and mods get a positive ID I would hope these lowlife tactics would get his card pulled. Lets not let this scum ruin a great thread.

Hirshey, sounds like your making a few people out there jelouse of your achievements, just shake it off, over the years ive had plenty of that kind of stuff happen. Theres allways going to be that kind of so called hunter out there looking for a short cut. Theres no substitute for hard scouting and miles traveled.

Thats a great pic Bone !!!

Thanks HeadHunter. That's very kind.
Bone, that's just what the doctor ordered! :) Nice photo and beautiful deer!

Tell me about it! Everytime I think I have you pined down......... The damn plane takes off :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Everyone these are some great animals and even greater accomplishments  I hope to join your elite group this fall. As for the (what bone said) get a little adventurous and except failure! you will feel better about it in the long run! I think :dunno:
-
Glad to see the thread back on track... :) Great Buck Hirshey you guys sure get it done!
Its sad that some folks just dont get it. Hell... the scenery is at least half the reason to hunt in deep, it angers me that folks who want to STEAL ruin my ability to share some of the splendor that is the backcountry or enjoy the sights of others through their photos... what a crock!!!
Ahhh well.... Heres a few of mine and hunting pards all archery.... You'll notice in a couple pics there are some landmarks.... They are either gone now or in areas that its not a big secret where the
PHOTO :chuckle: was taken.
-
I suck at computers.... Cant figure out how to put script in to "narrate" the pics... A couple more...
-
Those are fantastic photos! Definitely getting this thread back to its intent... Congrats!

Blackvelvet ..... :o I see gravel road in one of those pictures :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: could not of been that far in the back country :drool I AM JUST MESSING WITH YOU MAN :yeah: I COULD NOT RESIST IT ONCE I READ YOUR POST ABOVE .....Awesome trophies
-
And just for the LURKERS.... :chuckle: Both are BackCountry bucks... one late season BT strapped out whole to a packframe ( wont ever try that again!!) and the other an early archery Muley. Due to camera failures with both I was unable to get field shots :( That sucked but I guess the memories will have to do  BTW.... if your NOT a lurker but just like to figure out where pics were taken have at..... Just make sure when your doing your scouting to knock on the front door for a beer :chuckle:

I knew that was gonna come up!! :chuckle: Thats what I ws refering to with the land marks... Heres a pic of the "road" below... huge sections of land were locked up after the 2007 slides... Everything has since been repaired :( It was good while it lasted

This is the only animal I've killed with a bow and the only thing I've killed in a wilderness area. Obviously, it's about the smallest spike one could ever hope of seeing, but it's still a wilderness bow kill.
Love this thread by the way. There are some great bucks in this thread. Very cool stuff.

I bet that thing is eating very well. congrads

Congrats to all on some nice trophies and great adventures. Enjoying the thread. Thought I would add a few more misc shots from backcountry wilderness deer hunts. The elk pics are not from a designated wilderness but 4+ miles in on foot so I'll stretch the definition a bit.

Very Nice!!

Great pictures/animals boys  No one ever wants to take that extra minute to get a picture after you have been humping out a heavy load, but those pictures will be some of the most cherished.

I don't want to hijack the thread at all, but want to mention a group in the West called Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. I belong to it and think they're doing some great things for backcountry hunting and fishing opportunities and protection. Take a look if you're interested. PM me if you think you might want to come to a meeting to see what it's all about.
http://www.backcountryhunters.org/
You can barely see it in this pic, but there is a little 3 pt on my pack frame... Muzzleloader hunt ~4 miles in, in the kettle range. Nice scenery- but we struggled finding many quality deer on that hunt.

Very nice, good work on the archery bulls!

My favorite backcountry location was revealed in Eastmans too :bash: Effing guys thought they were professionals and decided to write in to eastmans. It was obvious by their story that their success was pure luck too :bash:
Why dont we post this guys user name? I saw you sent a PM with the name, but just post it so everyone knows who this leech is!

I don't know if he is a member or a guest.

One could always post some scenery pics from one location that is recognizable, then post some "success" pics from another. HMMMM...... Ideas are flowing now. :chuckle: Wild goose chase anyone?

I just want to caution people that post pictures with scenery in the background that there are people that are willing take your spot. He isn’t the type that cares about the hard work and effort that goes into finding these spots (most of us find this the fun part).
Just a caution when posting pictures of your favorite spots. It really is unfortunate. Bye the way I hope he reads this post and reconsiders.
All the more reason I make the posts I do about this very same thing happening. Nothing to do about being negative or taking away from the thread, but with all the technology these days, it's way too easy for somebody "steal" a spot. No laws against it, and it's pure patheticness, but it's the sad truth.
-
That truly sucks. Taking somebody elses hard work and trying to go with it. Another reason why I don't share my harvests and love the same thing as everybody else that posted in this thread, back country hunting. Get off the road a little and enjoy.
-
Besides it's common internet knowledge where MtnMuley's hot spots are anyhow. :chuckle:
-
Jason what gym?? Thorbecks? Just curious how this guy found out so much. Just by a land mark? Had he been to the area before? Kinda *censored*ty of him to do that.
-
Not something I really thought about much until the last couple of years. I now crop my pics (including my avatar) to cut out identifiable landmarks.
-

I would think he had beeni n there before or he could have zeroed it in via various photos on the web via hikers and other photo sites :dunno: hell for all we know he's not even close! Just a BSer! I've met one or two of them before ;)
-
Travis,
Yeah. I don't know if he had been there before or not. I'm assuming not since he was going scouting. I've never really talked to the guy before about hunting (I guess that's what I get for wearing my Primetime shirt to the gym).
A little Google earth time and a distinguishable landmark can give a spot away.
-
Probably full of chit. I wish I could kill a buck in the same spot every yr. I was just curious if I may know this clown. We should photo shop some pics with monster bucks and defiant land marks in the back ground and send him on some adventures ;)
-
Great Pic's!
Last year she saw a TON of goats on a 5 day hike. She saw the majority of goats after completeing Aasgard Pass. Even saw a couple on Little Annapurna. You probably did not have time to get up to L.A. on such a quick hike. Maybe someday a goat hunting permit will be available in the Enchantments, but for now I will do my shooting with a camera when I get my hiking permit.

THANKS! It almost doesn't qualify for this thread, but it was about as far from the road as you can get in this country. It was also between 9000, and 10,000 feet, and even for me, the air was a bit thin.

Hirshey, I would consider that hunting smarter, not necassarily harder and I do agree with you. Great pictures all!
I'll break the mold and post a scenary picture. A really easy spot to poach a honey hole if you are so inclined, have at it...somewhere around 20-25 miles from the air strip :chuckle:

Yep, thats my hunting partner. 9 Miles in by portaboat and boots. Almost killed him, it almost killed me. Wheres the fun at shooting a moose close to the road.

Yep, I believe its on both our walls. I have the pic taped to my monitor at work as well. That trip had more memories than most I have done.

I want to see the pic of that buck hung up in the tree again, bone. That was a cool shot.

Here's a backcountry buck with just the right amount of background and scenery.

The new pose is going to make a lot of back country (just off the road) animals a lots easier to post up ;)
-
That buck was further from the road than most individuals are willing to walk in a day...
I'm still not posting any with distant scenery. ;)

My backcountry trophies are not measured in bone but in horseback riding hours. This trip we rode about 30 hours total and are looking forward to this year's trip with 4 of my sisters! Really love this thread! Great photos! Please don't stop showing the scenery pictures on account of a few jerks. I love the pictures.
Right around 7500 ft or so on my horse.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi757.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx215%2Fsteen_photos%2FIMG0651.jpg&hash=337af39054c0c1299e7abcc06c5200c6ac8f7b6a)

Nope; there are still two moose sheds sitting across the San Poil river south of Republic I never got back to... :( See? There are some responsible government employees out there.. not using govt. resources for personal gain! Not saying I wasn't tempted to drive the work rig down there after hours.. :)
-
Hopefully it wasn't too far south or you would be getting a good size ticket for picking them up. ;)

Nah, Forest Service-administered land... too far to walk after a full day in the woods, though.

What a lowlife :bash:
can you tell us what handle he went by jason?? did he tell you what it was. im sure everyone here wants to know.

2011 modern firearm at around 6500'. My wifes first buck and my buck shot two days apart in basically the same location. I packed out both (about 4 miles each trip) and my wife carried the head each time (though she offered to pack the meat!).......great trip.

packed in 3.5 not wildernes but no roads and no hunters

My dad and I backpacked into a unit in Idaho. He shot this bull, which is his best. He turns 65 at the end of the month. I am proud of him, as this is his second backcountry hunt. He trained hard all summer, and was paid off for his hard work. Happy birthday dad!

hear is some backcountry bears the first pic is from 2010 it was a 20 yard bow kill, i had toilet paper in my mouth while i was pulling my drawers down to drop a load off, i look to my right and see several elk feeding up the meadow, then all the sudden they got real tense and hear comes the bear through the timber i think he was going aaftert the elk which had a few calfs in the herd. anyways the bear came into the lane i had anticipated my cow to step into, one arrow both lungs dead bear. then i finally dropped my load for sure! the black one pic is a rifle kill when i was 18. 5 yard head shot i may have dropped a load thier too. hope u enjoy. hurray for sore legs, dry food, miles of hiking and epic scenery. go backcountry!

These are three blacktail bucks that i got here in western Washington. They were taken on steep ground where there were no man made trails, and by the time I got them out, I had "dear" meat!

Those are nice animal. A real trophies for sure. Congrats.

The combined weight of these three deer, field dressed, was 670 pounds. The biggest one was the lower buck which was 250.
-
What caliber is the BLR? Must be an older one? :dunno:
-
Its a 308, Japanse made. I bought it new in 1977. Best 3 shot group was a half inch at 125 yards.
-
Love the old ones.

Yep, the older ones have character. A lot of folks don't like the shiney finish on the Brownings. I carried it so much over the years that not only is the finish gone, but the checkering is worn at the wrist and forearm from rubbing against my wool coat. It has been a great rifle.
-
It's too bad that they are made out of aluminum now. They are perfect for a first rifle in the short action other than they can get a little cold with the balance point being the box magazine, that steel can get cold!
I guess I could give you fifty dollars for it. :chuckle:

I 've got a suggestion. Buy a really good pair of gloves for the $50, then you won't feel the cold so much! :chuckle:
You are right though, the balance point was a bit awkward, which is why I cradled it in the crook of my arm and wore through the plastic finish.

couple of hard earned backcountry animals in last few of years in WA, MT,ID
-
I have only scored one backcountry buck. By far my nicest and has ruined me for regular season. The high hunt is what I live for now, if forced to wait for regular season I typically shoot the first legal buck I see for meat. My goal of shooting a 24"+ buck in wa was almost completed this year but low light, heavy smoke, and being my own spotter collaborated to failure on a 26" flat racked 4pt this season. Opting on a closer hole that last year also ruined my plans as idiots poured in and ran the bottoms, chasing off everything.. Next year I'll just endure the 7 miles of up again. Awesome pics everyone!! I am truly enjoying this thread!
Sorry for the crappy pic, but it was dark by the time we got to him..

2011 High Buck, Pasayten, as he lay. First Muley (grew up hunting wet side). Quartered with ribs and burger meat 174lbs on the hook. Measured 30.5" outside spread and IIRC scored mid 160s green but I never bothered checking again or having it professionally scored.

2010 Caribou, N. Slope Brooks Range, AK. Flew in ~40 miles (straight line) from the Haul Road and then rafted back out 60 miles to our truck. I got antsy knowing that we were fairly far north towards the tail end of the migration and dropped the first bull I saw, small rack but large body for his age, estimated 350-400lbs on the hoof. My partner dropped two larger bulls that dumbly elected to come within 1000 yards of us (with the wind to our advantage) while we were cleaning my animal.

Wow, looking back through these pics has me chomping at the bit to get back into the hills. I started a new job in July so have only been able to hunt weekends and have been unsuccessful so far this year. My uncle took a forkie blacktail but I know where there's a couple mashers hiding in the same area so I'm hoping to get one of them this weekend.
-
Max both hunts look awesome
-
That boys and girls is a first post right there. Awesome
-
Here is a couple of backcountry bucks. There is nothing better than coming out heavier than you went in.
-
Thanks guys! Not gonna lie, pretty proud of myself on those two hunts but it is great to look through this thread and remember that I've been skunked so far this year to keep myself humble :) I've been teaching my girlfriend to hunt this year and in trying to show her best practices in everything I have amazed myself in how many little things I had gotten lazy about and how much I have left to learn. Hopefully I will be able to take some time off from work next year and really put in some good days other than the weekends. (And hopefully everything won't be burning half way into October again!)
One more shot from the Brooks Range. Had a small herd of ~20 animals cross the river just behind us as the sun was setting on our last evening. Pretty magical.

E to add: Yeah, very nice bucks Jason. My back is a little jealous of those pack animals though . Definitely agreed on coming out heavier than you went in being one of the best things ever ...it just takes a couple days to feel it some times :D

What river did you float? Looks like Ivshak or Echooka country.....
Congrats on the critters.
-
Wow, good eye. We did indeed float out the Ivishak to the Sag. And in fact were planning to hunt N/NE out of our camp towards the Echooka before breaking camp and hunting along the float out, but ended up finding our critters all within 1.75 miles of our first camp. My hunting partner for this trip (actually one of my dad's hunting partners from when he lived in AK in the 70s and 80s) has done this particular trip 2 or 3 times and assistant guided in that general area during the 70s. He's always been successful but sometimes not till the last day just as they were approaching the 5 mile corridor. From his descriptions though we were pretty lucky to get on that many animals that quickly, it probably had to do with it being a bit of a warmer year than typical.

Is 4 miles in considered back country? My 2012 bull
-
That bull is definitely a trophy either way. I say if you packed a big bull elk out four miles, it's "backcountry enough" that's like a deer 16 miles into the hills.
-
Thanks man. It was a hard hike that's for sure. Hiked in at 5:30am, shot the bull at 12:30pm, got him gutted and cut up and left him at 5:30pm, got back to the camper at 11pm. Hiked back in at 8 am with a horse and got back out at 8:30pm. Very thankful for family!
-
love looking at that bull!

in the area you were! Going down is like stealing ;)
-
Is that a Wa bull Maverick?
-
does 150 miles from any civilization count as "back country"???
-
Is that a Wa bull Maverick?
yeah it was a blues bull. Going down maybe like stealing but the spots with snow and falling Down a lot sure sucked. Then the rest of the hike OS all up hill!
-
Is 4 miles in considered back country? My 2012 bull
Maverick, that isn't a trophy that is Godzilla, the original monster.
4 miles of packing. Hibernate well this winter!
-
Haha I can't do that, its still hunting season. Gotta whack some yotes, ducks, geese, pheasants and find some sheds!

Nice work everyone!
Eyeguard and I had a backcountry hunt in Idaho... ended up pretty successful. Even helped another hunter we met up there into a nice deer. :)

Sorry, I don't know why the photos came through so small... :dunno: Oh well. Eyeguard's is a nontypical 5x5 and mine is a solid 4x4 with eyeguards as is the other gentleman's.
-
Very nice bucks and pics  Looks like a great trip! congratz!
-
Some more nice animals there Hirshey. Awesome job!

Dear Hirshey,
I know this may be awkward but I would like to offer my son as a betrothal to you. Granted, I don't know if I spelled that right, he is only 6 right now, is into Lego's more than girls, and you appear to be currently spoken for. However, if you are willing to wait say.....12 years or so.....I think you both would make a great pair. Think it over, sleep on it, let me know.

Just remember, father-in-laws can look but they can't touch...it just gets creepy :chuckle:
-
I only want what is best for my son.

:chuckle: :chuckle:

I've been getting around to creating a write-up for that trip... I've just been terribly busy seeing as we pretty much fell right into roosevelt muzzleloader season upon our return. :) Thanks for all the kind words; you are all too nice! The pack is indeed a Kuiu Icon... its a fantastic pack but I recommend keeping the proper bolt tightening equipment in a dedicated pocket because the waistbelt attachment seems terribly prone to unscrewing. As for the boy, while I am currently single, I'll take him hunting any day but no promises of future romance. :chuckle:
-
I'll let him know you are at least open to the idea.
I'll look forward to the write up.....I'd be hard pressed to hunt the same areas and keep up with you.
-
My son is 3 months old. I've attached a crappy cell phone picture....... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Crappy cell pic......check.
Nice bear....check.
Future bear killer.....check.

Im single, just throwing it out there :chuckle:

:) you guys are too funny! Either that or very kind.. Perhaps a combination of both.

Or maybe they are just lonely? :chuckle:

You all want a girl that would whoop you up down the hills? And shoot bigger bucks? She's already got my butt beat on muleys. That's an intimidating women right there! :chuckle: but a damn good looking one ;)

flirting will get you no where!!

hirshey what made you switch from eberlestock to kuiu.
-
hirshey what made you switch from eberlestock to kuiu.
I really like eberlestock in terms of quality, features and customer service but they just dont adjust down in size to fit my petite frame. The shoulder straps are set too wide so I ended up having to hold them while hiking. I had a friend who was more suited size-wise for that pack so I gave it up. The kuiu is MUCH more adjustable to my size and hikes like a dream even with heavy loads. The carbon fiber frame broke hauling out eyeguards spring bear and kuiu was quick to replace it. I've been pleased with all their gear thus far. I still own an eberlestock day pack I just can't comfortably haul heav loads with their extended day bags.
-
I'm taken!
My stable is full as well. :chuckle:
Gosh I'm happy to stay single and keep out of a stable! I know I've been out of the dating scene for a while but that sounds like rough accommodations.
I prefer bivvy camps or houses.. ;)
-
Yea its hard to beat a good Bivy camp but I have yet to see one made for 2!!
-
Thanks for the info
-
If you aren't in the stable then you're missing out!
-
Thanks for the info
No problem.. Medium to large build with broad shoulders and the eberlestock packs are glorious.. Sadly thats not my body type. :)

Some very nice animals on here
-
yeah maybe we should get back to the critters and leave poor hirshey alone, she seems to have enough trouble with the pointy eared 4 legged critters as is, last thing she needs is the 2 legged trying to hunt her down!
Not a monster but it was my 1st and the hardest i worked to get a deer yet.

Nice...very nice.
Besides...regarding Ms. Hirshey....she is already betrothed to my 6 year old son so back off!!!!
-
Just Sasquatch .... I'm no good at hunting anything else.

Nice. I never realized that BF was neither a male nor a female creature... :chuckle:
Did you rug him out, or just do a shoulder mount?
-
Just a shoulder mount. Crazy thing happened, I was about to expose him to the world to prove his existence; however, he just disappeared out of my house one morning. My thoughts are it was either the illuminati or alien abduction. I must go and make a new tin foil hat, as not to expose myself to danger for this response....
-
Sorry, will not post any more stupid responses. Don't want to take away from this awesome post.. Keep the "real" pictures coming!
-
I was stumbling through the archives and came across this thread. Is there a reason why it died? Would anyone oppose resurrecting the thread? Seems like a cool topic and I enjoyed reading through the past posts and all the great pics.
-
Took this one in Colorado. Roughly 8 miles deep into a designated roadless area.
-
Awesome bull!
-
Nice work!
-
I took this bull the season before the bull in my last post. Also taken in the same roadless area. My hunting comrade and I would take a man-made trail for 2.5 miles, then we would bushwack away from the trail using game trails. Our spike camp was 6.5 miles deep and then we would hunt out from there.
-
And of course, you will always run into the big one when you don't have a tag. This buck is from the Colorado high country and was living around the 11,500 ft mark.
-
Another Colorado high country buck.
-
That is a sweet pic and buck. Hard to tell on my cell phone, was the photo taken in fog?
-
No taken through my spotting scope with the sun directly behind the buck. Made a great silhouette.
-
Here's one. I was lucky enough to be hunting with my dad when he pulled the trigger on this one.
-
By the size of his body you would think his rack would much larger, nice one.
-
Way way back country AK hunt. Most amazing trip of my life! I shot a caribou, and nice moose and I through in a picture of a HUGE wolf my buddy shot. He said, "make sure you get my peta hat in the picture". That wolf was so scary huge! I also came across this big bear walking up by the river one afternoon.. I was shocked at how fast he ran away when he caught my scent. This was by far the hardest hunting trip I've ever been on (2weeks out) we flew 3 hours out, rafted 60 miles and flew back out.. In all the 4 of us took 3 bull moose, 6 caribou and the wolf. ( my buddies live in AK and invited me on this Amazing trip) ..
-
Very nice Tbob!!

Dream hunt right there Tbob, nice.

2010, opening morning in the Strawberry Wilderness of Oregon.
Nice buck. DIY? Did you see a good amount of bucks in there?
-
Miles, yes it was DIY. Only a couple small bucks on the hoof but did see a few other dandies come out from other guys that packed in. Shot my buck opening morning and only spent the first couple days hunting the wilderness before moving onto our other spots. My dad and I have hunted and spent a considerable amount of time over in the Murderer's Creek Unit/Strawberries and have seen some very nice bucks in and outside of the wilderness. I've been fortunate to take two other 4 pts. in that country but outside of the Wilderness.

I'll be up there in a couple years for a dall sheep/grizzly combo hunt. Great Dall and beautiful country.

Tagged this old girl last weekend. Thread is posted on here.
-
The last 3 years we have hunted a lot harder in the pasayten wilderness. we have definitely had some missed opportunities at some way bigger bucks but that's how hunting goes. I have attached my father and I 2012 wilderness bucks, my father and brothers 2013 bucks, and my 2014 high buck hunt deer and my dads 2014 regular season wilderness buck. they have all come out of the same area and we saw a total of 17 bucks last year. My dad missed twice at a easily 190" deer from how he describes it at 36 yards. I am super excited for September to get here.
-
Nice bucks, congrats!

Great bucks. Congrats. The big three with eye guards is very cool
