Title: How the boys measure up! PART II youth turkey
Post by: HORSEPOWER on March 23, 2012, 05:28:02 PM
Here is a pic of my two boys and their good buddy.  They were all successful last year opening weekend spring turkey.  You can only imagine the bets going on! :chuckle:  They sure did a lot of measuring!

I've got 3 boys and that looks fun.  I never hunted as a kid and I'm having a great time hunting with them.

Logan and I will be at Camp on April 5-8 for youth turkey and then the normal old farts come in the next weekend for a week.  LOL  We will stop in and see you and the boys.  Might steal a few eggs.. :)  I was gonna clean up the place a bit and cut some wood too.  Did everything make it through winter OK?

Wow, Good day!  It started out with 2 inches of snow on the ground, frozen solid.  It sounded like you were walking on bubble wrap!  We were really noisy.  The turkeys were roosted closer than we thought and they busted us, but Pa (Dad) made some calls and they started running to us.  We were out in the open with hardly any sagebrush and only a few trees around, just standing there- I mean they REALLY busted us!  So Pa put the decoy up on his head and kept calling.  It was pretty funny but it worked good!  There were 3 Toms in the group and every time one got in the lead another would jump on it.  One Tom came within 20 yards of me but I didn't take a shot because I was waiting for my brother to get a shot at the same time.  That didn't work out so well  :(.

Down in the canyon our buddy was hunting and got his nice Jake within a half an hour at about 7 yards!  Him and his dad were in their custom blind they built.

This afternoon Owen and I went back out.  I went back out in the same place and didn't have any luck.  Owen went out were his buddy hunts and got a nice Tom.

I'll try it again Sunday!

Yelp, The mailman filled us in a little.  We were going to try to make it to Chicken Camp today to see you and Logan.  Maybe Sunday.  Good luck!

Here is a couple of Mom's pictures.

Very good job boys .... Horsepower did you try any new type calling ? or did you just go with the usual ? I just talked with 2 of my good friends and they did well too !! but they told me that the birds were heavily flocked up and seen one flock with over 200 birds in it !!  What type of groups did you run into ?

Wow, that's a lot of birds!  The groups we have been seeing around here are the usual 7-15 birds.  We very rarely have turkeys come around the house but last Friday we had a group of 9 hens hanging around.  We were harrowing the field behind the house and the tractor even had to stop for them :chuckle:.

BOWHUNTER45- Thanks for the good info.  Yes they changed thier game up a litttle and those old toms did respond pretty good!  I didn't get anywhere in time to get the call that you recommended but I had a similar one.  The primos should be here this week.  Oh ya, and so will the new 3-D bear target :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: ! Haven't told the hubby  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: !

Well, Owen's bird had an 8 1/16" beard and 7/8" spurs.  Cole put on miles today with Pa and no luck.  Now they can't wait until gerneral season starts  so they can get back out there.  Spring break is over now and baseball starts Monday!

Tell the boys congrats!  I knew they were probably hunting them thar birds..I put 6 miles on Logans legs..and we know that is 6 miles more than the mailmans type of hunt.. :chuckle:.  Heard and saw lots of birds..Camp looks good.  Got out there and did some cleaning too and wood cut.  I got a line on some birds..might have to go talk to Cody's Dad.  We came close on Sunday by old chicken camp two toms but wouldn't commit themselves..i guess they are smarter than I thought!   :)  Tell Owen Great turkey! Tell Cole..good luck and that I heard there are a few birds at the neighbors too..I got calls from three different people heading east who saw them from the highway 35-50 birds.  I will be getting Logan out again soon..he is itch'n to pull the trigger. :)
