Depends. In the nasty stuff where a shot past 150 yards isn't going to happen, my win 94 30-30 with a peep sight. I plan on having a 7mm rem mag for longer areas, most likely in tikka variety.

I have the same set-up, much lighter than either of my 300 wbys.

I will carry my T/C Encore with the .280Rem barrel on it. I have a nice Burris 3.5-10 scope on it now. It's kind of big but it works. The rifle is tiny with that 24" .280 barrel on it. I think we're right about 7 pounds 2 oz. which is nice. Better than 9.5# all up with the 28" .300 winmag barrel and my leupy.

Custom savage 110 in 7 rm. topped with Vortex 6.5-24, right around 9 pounds with bipods, and a Custom Howa 338 wm topped with a nikon 4.5-14 right around 9 pounds with bipods. The little extra weight really helps with holding the gun still and hec whats a couple pounds in the pack.

If I take the spotting scope, I'll probably grab my son's Marlin XL7 in 270win, or the other son's Tika T3 30-06, as they are a couple pounds lighter than my Ruger. If I don't take the scope, My Ruger 77 is my go-to rifle.

Model 600's in either 243 or 308, or a Tikka in 2506.  Though most of the time I don't notice the weight that much and pack my bigger M700.  Or if I really want to go a long ways, an Encore in 7-08, 15" pistol....

My hunting partner(boyfriend) packs in a muzzleloader and I pack a rifle... :) I think he's got me beat on gun weight without having to worry about a scope. :)

mine is being worked on right now getting the new stock ( Bell & Carlson Alaskan 700 Ti Model)
glassed to my 300 wsm remington.  topped with a 4x14x50 gold ring (also getting worked on by leupolds custom shop for turrets. it has a custom brake installed when he did that he messed up the coating on the barrel  :bash: :bash: the worst part is he did the same to my dads brand new never fired rifle he didnt use a pad on the vise jaw. it was the xcr so i had the whole thing blasted and guncoated and trigger job done. im hoping to come in under 8 pounds with sling but will see the new alaskan models only weigh 25-30 oz. so we will see when its all said and done ill update this with final weight.

I'm lightening up a small ring mauser this week...cutting 5" off the barrel and shortening the forearm a bit to save some weight.  It's a 7.62x53 ARG.  I also have a ruger 77 in 7mm mag- it's the boat paddle stock with a 22" stainless barrel.

Perhaps at some point! I definitely strive to give the animals a fair chance of spotting me... I don't believe any of my deer have been harvested at over 150 yards, and most have been well within 100. I have to admit I like the knock-down power of firearms.. I'm always afraid that with a bow I wouldn't have as good of fortune at lights-out shots; I haven't really had a need yet to improve my tracking skills.  :chuckle:

But I did just pick up a Kimber 84m in .308 with a Leupold vx3 3-9x40. Weighs almost exactly 6 lbs total without sling. Feels like a toy almost it's so light. And I'm surprised and quite happy with the accuracy as well.

probably the lightest rifle I have is my marlin xl7 stainless topped with a leupold 3x9 that I had the custom shop put their fine crosshair reticle in.  My problem is know matter the hunt I always chicken out at the last second and grab old betsy out of the safe, Browning BLR in 30-06 with the same scope as above.  I love that rifle more than my children :chuckle:

If you can afford it go with the Kimber 84m Montana...I can't so I carry the Savage Lightweight hunter in 7mm-08. My 9 year old son carries the new (last year shot show edition) browning micro-midas in 7mm-08 (he is a lefty and this was the only model I could find...hence why I can't afford the kimber...) we both have Leupold glass sitting on top of them (yes, my 9 year old has a $800 rifle and a $400 scope...buy cheap, buy twice...plus again, the darn kid is a lefty...not much selection with quality there).

G-C-R

PS. If your gonna get serious about a backcountry rifle, get into reloading...my 7mm-08 is a tack driver and is pushing the 139 grn Hornay GMX almost 3,000 fps...with a 20" barell

Pre M70 in a Mcmillan edge Compact and a #2 Rock Creek spout with a wee shank chambered in 280AI.

Ain't a fly weight but handles like it should and is plenty light enough for me.

Can't see where a 84M Montana in 308 would suck at anything, as a do all pack rifle.

Have a skinny friend that packs a Weatherby 30-378 Accumark with 6-24 Leupold everywhere and never complains. Especially when the closest range is pushing 600yds.

I typically carry a 325WSM Kimber 8400 Montana with 2.5-8 VX3 at a bit under 8lbs fully loaded with sling.

Gonna likely carry my semi-custom Remington 700 BDL in 280AI this year and with a new stock should have it well under 8lbs depending on what stock I get.

$4000 later! lol i am looking at a christensen 300 winmag for $2500 we will see...keeping my fingers crossed, it would be even better if i could throw a nightforce scope on it!

I wouldn't spend a dime on a christensen rifle. A) carbon wrapped barrels are insulators that dot let your barrel cool down and will unzip like the fly in your jeans if they get hot. B) there are a TON of negative review on Christensens barrels and people not getting them to shoot well. C) for the money you spend for a Christensen rifle, you could have a custom built rifle that's more accurate and exactly what you want/need.

Interesting to hear that, couple guys and I have been looking into lighter rifles for extended trips.  The Christensen rifles were brought up (more of a someday wish to spend that kind of $$ though), but I hadn't heard much about them other than the occasional commercial on T.V., initially sounded like a pretty neat concept to go with carbon fiber.

It shoots great  its very light and it handles the elements very well.

Remington 700 SPS w/ Nikon 3-9x40  or Smith & Wesson 629, 8 3/8" which weighs nearly as much but makes jungle hunting blacktails easier.
Glad to see I'm not the only one dragging an SPS into the back country.

Win. Extreme weather in 30-06 with vx III 2.5x8 in talley ringes or a M70 stainless 338 win. Mag with turned down barrel and cut.to 22" in a HS precision stock and a vx III 2.5x8 in talley rings . Both rigs weigh in at roughly 7.5-7.75 lbs but that good for me. I have done the ultra light thing and the balance between light weight and still being able to get well placed shots and a good sjootable rifle puts them at 7.5 lbs for.myself.

That rifle of autodink's is one hell of a mountain rifle. How did it work again on that giant bull you shot last year Brent?

Here is my setup.

Tikka action with trigger set at 1.25 lbs.
26" Brux #5 fluted barrel.
6.5-06 Ackley improved.
Weighs 9 lbs 8 oz and shoots nice little groups.

Three shots 100 yds.

Thinking of retiring my old workhorse this year.  I have been using a Rem Model 700 7mm Mag since I was big enough to shoot it.  This gun has been through a lot with me.  Its starting to show a lot of wear... cant keep the rust off of the barrel, stock is faded and showing signs of water damage.  I feel like I could have taken better care of it, but it spent many nights out under the stars while I was in a tent, many years hunting on the wetside, and an entire summer in remote Alaska where we were both living in a tent.

I would replace it with the gun I have really been wanting (Tikka T3 Lite also in 7mm), but I still am having a hard time letting go.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

just do some upgrades to the Remington. new stainless barrel and a lightweight stock.

If it still shoots well just Cerakote the metal flat black and drop it in a Manners Elite Hunter stock. Like brand new and lighter!

I genarally hunt muzzleloader and pack in that heavy sucker every year on the high hunt. This year i purchased the multi deer tag. Needless to say i purchased a new sako a7 tecomate 300 wsm. Very light. 6.5 lbs. looking forward to be able to shoot more than 200 yards. Eveyone says pack light but i just can't seem to understand that concept. I like to have all the tools to give me the extra advantage. The guys i go with bring beat up old rifles and *censored*ty binos and give me a hard time for packing good quality binos and spotting scope. Pretty funny when we get there they use my gear more than i do. I always pack heavy but i am in great shape. The only thing that sucks is on the way out when your adding the extra 100 pounds with the animal.
