Went to the Washington State Bowhunters banquet last night and it was a top notch event. Hats off to those guys who volunteer countless hours to make it happen, you did a great job!
The WSB organized a point counter point presentation, between the WDFW Assistant Director and the Lead Attorney for the largest opposition group in the nation, to discuss Wolf introduction. Each gave a 25 minute presentation and then they both answered audience questions from both sides of the issue. I’m not sure that format has taken place before. It was interesting, informative, and really down right sad. The WSB is defiantly on the front line in this issue and the presentation of was outstanding!
If you’re a bowhunter in Washington and not a member of WSB, you just don’t get it. This organization has fought for every season and opportunity that archers have in this state. Our opportunities are threatened every season with reductions and closures and the WSB goes to battle to preserve and expand our allocations. So do your part, get involved, make sure your membership is current and if you’re not a member yet, get on board and we’ll see you at next years banquet! :archery_smiley:

How do I join?

Several ways. You can go to wabowhunters.com, print a registration form and send it in, or you can go to WSB on Ebay and pay online. You can also join at any of their yearly events and sportsman's shows. For more info check out their facebook and web page.

Who won and what with....the details.... The Glenn St Charles Award this year.
The banquet snuck up on me this year. The ones I have been too have always been great fun
-
Will check out and see about joining.

I know I got tired of seeing the changes to the Archery seasons and started asking questions. That is how I found out about the WSB and ended up attending the banquet on Saturday to check things out. It was a good dinner and way to raise funds for the WSB to fight the good fight. I am definitely joining and hope to find a way to contribute other than just my membership.
The person from the state talked about scientific data for the wolf plan but never showed anything other then other state population numbers. I asked how they could justify 15 breeding pairs here in WA when Idaho only qualified 10 breeding pairs when they started their program. He never talked about the game animals that could support their population numbers which is why I asked the question since WA has about half the game animals Idaho has to sustain themselves. It just did not make sense to me. He never really answered the question with any good facts or data which leads me to believe they have no idea how they came up with that number other then that is what other states used.
The apposing group gentleman did a good job of showing good data points and showing how even in other states where they started with a certain number of breeding pares, each state was well beyond that number before finally looking at managing the existing numbers of wolves.
Join the WSB and join the fight for our rights as hunters and for real management of all game animals.

I just joined on ebay. Brilliant idea. Snail mail and checks do not agree with me very well.

I'm sorry I don't know the details, but WOW what a monster! It should be in the next issue of the WSB magazine.

There is a bunch of ways to get involved and they need the help! Membership and manpower are the keys to continuing to gain rather than lose. Check the magazine and website for upcoming meetings and events and then just show up. That goes for everyone! You would be hard pressed to find a nicer group of guys to talk archery with.
-
Thanks for the info about joining on ebay, that was quick and easy. My membership must have lapsed and I never seem to notice it. Would like to have attended the banquet, but work got in the way.
-
Bone,
I won the St. Charles award with a non-typical whitetail that scored 193 7/8....grossed 201 2/8. Overall the banquet was good and it was great to see all the hunting buddies...just wish they had a larger turnout.
-
I paid for the banquet at the Sportmens Show when I joined but got very sick on Thursday :bash: Didnt get out of bed til Sunday afternoon. Completely sucked I was really looking forward to going. Definitely going to check the next WSB mag issue and show up to the next meeting. Great organization, website is getting better as well which will really help them/us grow.

Thats awesome Hindtit. Can't wait to see him in the magazine. Congratulations. You'll enjoy the plaque hanging in your home for the year.
-
Congrats again Hindtit on your whopper of a buck! That was a beautiful specimen!! You should post a picture on here for everyone to enjoy. (If you don't put a picture up, then the coordinates to your stand will be posted instead.) :chuckle:
Hey Bone, I saw your name on the Glenn St. Charles Award for a muley. Any chance you could post a picture of him?
-
Hindtit,
I sat just behind you at the banquet, that is an incredible rack and is well deserving of the award! I will be back next year for sure. I hope more folks will show up to support as well.

I figured I could use this as leverage to get more people to join WSB....only way to see the picture is to join and get the newsletter. :chuckle:

Yes, I won it a couple of years ago for a muley and a couple of years before that for my Shiras moose. I'll dig up some pics. I was hoping for a threepeat one of these years. I didn't think my 160 muley had a chance this year.

Well deserved, that was an awesome buck! Don't forget to send a pic to the magazine editor to get it in the next issue. Turnout for the banquet was more than the past few years but with a big push this year from all of us, it should continue to grow. They need our help and it's time for all of us to step up and get involved. The WSB should continue to be one of the strongest organizations in the state and with the plans the club has for this year and an infusion of new energy for all of you, it will be.

Honestly, there has been a little bit of dicontent with the WSB as I imagine there is with anything political. I didn't enjoy them taking a stance on illuminocks and "speaking for all bowhunters" and then when disagreeing with them made me an "elitist" trad hunter, that kind of torqued me off. I know as a club I suppose they need to take stands and they need to lobby for things, but in this case it made me back way off from the WSB. I still think its a good organization with worthwhile goals and I am sure I will come around and be more supportive. I am not a member of the Trad organization in this state either.

That's a bummer AK. I meet you at the Spotsman's show and looked for you at the banquet. The next meeting is Sunday, April 1st at the Sunset Cafe in Cle Elum, 10am. Also the summer rendezvous is set for July 13-15, this is a great shoot and a way to get involved and support the club.
-
Killbilly and I were there. He picked up a nice prize in the raffle. There was a good turnout compared to the last few years. Alot of money was raised for the organization. Ryan Benson from Big Game Forever did an excellent job with his presentation as did Nate. Ryan was very courteous and to the point when opposing the states ideas and numbers.
WSB is one of a few bowhunting organizations in the state. All of us will never agree on everything but they do fight very hard for our bowhunting opportunities. I know the lighted nock issue is very sensitive but everyone has different views. Whether you join WSB or not, I urge you to join at least one of the organizations. There is strenght in numbers.

Glad to see you are softening your discontent. Every issue has two sides and sometimes the outcome and process can cause rift but when you look at the big picture, the WSB is vital to strong archer representation. When the department has an archery related change they want a position from the WSB. The club puts the issue to it's members and then reports the findings. As with everything political, decisions rarely make everyone happy.

Info for the bowhunters that are not involved with WSB, way back in the beginning Chuck Bartlett, Gerald Egber, and Al Rinaldi founded the WSB club, back then we only could hunt Nason Creek, Long Island, and maybe one other area. threw the years these men and many more fought hard , donated many long hrs and lots of money to have what we have today for the bow hunting seasons in Wa. many thanks to all that have donated their time. Now we have most of the state although we have lost a lot in many areas, cow hunts, area 101 late season used to end Dec 31 (when the big bucks would come in),lost 5 days in the early deer season, our early elk dates are changing for the worst . And the Dept still try's and does take away more from us. So for you non members do yourself a favor and step up to the plate and join the club and fight for what we have so we don't loose more,Power is in numbers. We are having a board meeting April 1 at the Sunset Cafe at 10:00AM, in Cle Elum . All are invited to attend non members too. Hope to see some new faces

Some great company. I have never met Gerald. I met Al at the last two banquets I went too. Seemed like a stand up guy, even for a lawyer. :) I had the priveledge of talking to Chuck on the phone one day. I am not much of a phone talking type of a guy, but I would bet I could spend a week in the woods BSing with this guy, listening to his stories and experience and advice. I was in a horrible mood when he called. Struggling with something in the back 40. It was a very uplifting conversation. What a great photographer. Someone I really look up to.

Amen. My dad was involved back in the beginning. He won the Glenn St. Charles award one year with a Swakane buck. I am picking up his fight. We need everybody on board to make sure the efforts of those in years past don't get reversed. :twocents:

Good to hear. I'm in the same boat, my uncle has been part of the club for a long time. Most of the founding and active members are getting up there in years and they need our help. It's time for the next generation to pick up the torch that these guys have been carryin for all these years and make sure the WSB remains a strong organization.

Chucks pictures were what really started to get me hooked on blacktail hunting. I think I went two full years without ever even seeing a buck during the archery season and I remember thinking how in the hell is this guy getting close enough to see these things let alone take pictures!!
I wonder what part of the state they go to take some of their pics.
My first year hunting in WA was the year Chuck and Grace had that cover pic of that HUGE Blacktail on the WDFW regs.

In more recent years Chuck spends much if all of his time photographing inside of Olympic National Park. He didn't used to go there, but his method of getting close habituates the wild animal to his presence, and he recognized that by gaining their trust he was also making them more vulnerable to someone toting a weapon instead of a camera. So he moved within the park boundaries and largely stays there.
