I saw a "deer block" made of compressed corn and such at a local hardware store. Has anybody every used this type of bait for attracting deer/elk ect?
How long do they last?

Agree with h20hunter, bears seem to like them better then deer/elk.

Yep.....when Mr. Bar comes a knockin, he will eat one in one sitting......as for deer.....can last a month or longer depending on how many use it. I personally prefer to put out mineral blocks so the deer get some nutrition.....the corn/molasses block is like putting out candy bars...same as sweet cob.
Trace minerals is where its at....they will return to a mineral site as long as it is active, man made or natural.

trace minerals and salt 50lb bag for like $7 at the feed store. I went through 10 game blocks in 2 weeks with a bear that was taken them and hauling them off. 20 minutes after I dropped it and check my other camera the damn bear took it not once not twice, three damn times in three days!!! go with minerals or food plots!

Good Call, I agree. The mineral blocks or salt bags seem to work best

Del's sells a deer block... used it for my trail cam last year. Found a gutpile not far from it after a nasty weather day I was unable to hunt. Probably the nice 2x3 blacktail I had pegged. Funny I only saw one person ever in the area on my trail cams... Oh, I skunked last year on deer. 16 does and not a horn to be seen.

I used to bowhunt and would nail small mineral licks in my shooting lanes. It worked great. You could put the small rodent licks up 3 feet in your shooting perimeter and know it was deer, elk, or bear using it. I was very succesfull with them.

I've used them a ton on whitetail, how do they work on blacktail and elk?

I've used some of the trace mineral blocks and have pics of deer (blacktail) having a sniff or a lick. I also secure them to a tree or something. However...damn bears will pull 'em off if they get the chance. Maybe it is me. Maybe I just smell nice and tasty. Last year bears ate all my s**t....appples, cob, blocks, even my camera! Shoot......best shot I had on a bear was while I was taking a leak. First chance I get this year boo boo is going down!

Just to update the group...deer block + 6 week soak resulted in 273 pics of deer. No bears, though I've seen them rarely in this area. I was surprised, the block didn't attract small game like rodents, squirrels, birds, ect, but to my surprise still over 1/2 block remains after six weeks afield. Very satisfied with the results.

What kind of Deer block and where can a guy get one? I have a couple does that come through the yard and would like to have them hang out

Purina Deer Block. Found it at my local feed store. I've seen them at a few ACE hardware stores as well.
I also used trace minerals 4lb salt lick, but it looked relatively untouched.

I put out a "deer" block last year and have 200 pictures of a bear that ate, napped, ate some more, groomed and finished it off in one sitting. LOL> :chuckle:

I don't know about years past but last year it seemed like a lot of bears were coming into trace mineral blocks. I remember a lot of guys commenting on this. Is that usually the case? Or was that a once in a couple of years type thing. I just started using cameras last year so still learning. :) Last year I used:
Salt blocks
Salt blocks with trace minerals
Rock salt
Apples
Wet cob
It all worked great! I never posted pics I will try and get those up this week

salt works great till mid July in NE WA about when the lush green food begins to dry up and the massive amount of water they consume in feed is gone and the antlers are begining to finish off so does the need for salt.. Deer blocks are pricey!! when u can buy COB for the same price and get 10-20lbs more!

The caveat to this is if you have the block next to a year round water source. I have had deer on the mineral blocks virtually all year. But I agree with huntnnw on mid to late summer "dry up" on these block as an attractant.

I've had great success with selenium blocks. Buy the 50lb blocks the bears will pull them out of the hole but they have a hard time taking off with them.

I have tried regular salt blocks, alphalpha, the buck grub apple goo, apple mineral blocks, the trophy rock thingy, and the deer blocks with the corn. The only thing I have seen bring in blacktails, and elk regularly has been the apple mineral block which Wal-Mart doesnt carry year round. I have the trophy rock out now with cams seeing how it does as for the deer blocks with the sweet stuff, and corn I had a bear eat mine too he even ate the dirt around where all the little pieces fell off. Food plots can work, but all the fields we have planted on my neighbors farm for elk are mainly only browsed at night it is too exposed during the day. They may work better in a place with more cover.

I use the Deer Acres block and a bag of cracked corn or whole corn. It takes about 3 days for them stinkin' deer to find it.

Dels farm and feed has an actual deer block... was inexpensive too I think around 13-15 dollars. I think a good mineral block would be good too. And the small animal licks in shooting lanes. Worked for me when I archery hunted. The small licks are just a 3inch pinwheel with a hole in the center so you could nail it to a tree. I used to replace them all year round at 2 month intervals. It works...

I buy mine from Ace hardware and they seem to work well I have had a few bears come buy and they don't seem to bother it. I also have a mineral lick and rock salt with selenium. It appears this time of the year they eat more of the block than the do the salt, but they still like the salt. I also put out a grain mix with sweetener. I buy this at Coastal Farm and Ranch. The deer really like it. Doesn't last long at all, but it keep them coming back. My stand has a smorgasbord. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Out of all the blocks I have tried for Mulies. Molasses, soft types you partially burry and assorted others. The small " Deer Cocaine " blocks have by far attracted more deer.

I've been using the 5-6 dollar small, apple loaf blocks. Deer and elk alike love em. I put 2 out at a time.
