Why is second deer a permit for a specific area and not just for a second tag ??? I don't understand??? How does the second deer permit work? I didn't see any second deer areas around me wtf!
-
They give out second deer tag in the specail permit draw for areas they say have to many or enough to allow for some extra deer (does) to be taken out. And this year they also are charging over triple as they used to for that tag if you are drawn. Used to be like $20...now its over $60
-
This 2nd tag BS came out last year. All the units just had the general special permit system right? you paid your $5.50 for the chance at doe or buck. Well the greedy geniuses at WDFW said hey, we can make more dough if we get rid of most of that and take all the good units and draws, (3/4) of em or more, and lets make the suckers fork over another $24 bucks for a second tag. Man that really pissed me off. And the jerks didnt even have the decency to increase opportunity for the youngsters. Didnt participate in that charade and wont.
-
This is bs the way they run there draws. What happened to just being happy with the cost of the tag if the hunter chose to buy it wtf . So If I ever draw one of these quality bs drawings I have to pay extra for the hunt wtf??? I can't just buy my deer tag and go to the special permit area on the days it says ??? I have to pay 60 dollars more to hunt the permit hunt plus the cost I normal liscenes what's the elk special permit cost 600??? WTF !!!!!

Elk and deer you don't pay unless its a second tag
-
the prices we pay should allow 2 deer anyways :dunno: :yeah: 1 BUCK & 1 DOE AND NO WOLVES ...SOUNDS GOOD TO ME !!
-
No kidding! The multi should come with a second tag for doe. At $182!!! I hope I draw something besides my very expensive deer tag I'll buy a second deer permit if I can find any area I know on there.
-
And btw we need wolf tags here in Washington idaho had a BLAST!!!

So go hunt Idaho and quit bitchin about Washington's permits and prices...

It's been longer than that because I've drawn a 2nd deer tag two years in a row now. It's mostly a damage control program for areas with high deer concentrations and crop damages and possibly low buck/doe ratios. I think all the second tags are for does.
I for one appreciate being able to get the extra venison in my freezer.

No wolves? :dunno:
-
Man I messed that up ...thinking to fast ...I meant give us 2 tags and do not plant the freakin wolves ....it that better :chuckle: If they want to take out a few more elk and deer then they should be giving us the extra tags not the damn wolves !!
-
I'm pretty sure the price increase was between the drawing results and the actual season last year...? I waited until just before the 2nd deer season that I drew and was shocked at the register. It only took me one day to fill my tag but after tag, gas, food, and a free place to stay, my doe was the most expensive venison I've paid for. I cut and wrapped myself but couldn't imagine what the bill would of come too if I had it done...it's a great hunt if you have kids that want a "gimme" doe (which is a great experience) but if you're a meat hunter I'd stay close to home for it to be less painful out of pocket.
I'd say it's good to have the option if you don't score during general or if you can afford it (IMO). I don't think I'll apply for it this year but encourage it if it's right for you. Good luck!

I was looking at the prices today and at least they left the youth at $22...I will still put my son in for it
-
I might as well put in. extra steaks and another 60 on top of my 285 it wants for combo and multi isn't that much.
-
More meat.. Mmmmmm
-
To much. I'm out.
-
One less permit app I need to buy now...
-
I'm not applying for second deer (doe only) Decatur Island any more. I'll be damned if I pay that much for 20 pounds of meat! Weathergirl will not be either, she usually applied for the second tag but never used it. Previous to last year, you could at least try for a second buck with a little more meat on its bones.
-
After looking at the regs and sd permits..... I say probably not. Just put that 60 towards idaho!!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
$68 plus another $8.60 for the application. Ouch.

:yike: no thanks !

I too am out.
I've had a 2nd tag 2 years in a row but I'm all done at that price.
-
Very steep prices. Sure would like a branch bull so I could complete my WA hunting. As long as I am putting in on a pile of branch points, I may as well put in on my pile of quality buck points as well. Then I am focasing on Idaho and Oregon!
-
Well I gues I can look at all this outrageous increase one only one positive which is also a negitive, all these raised rates are going to push more people to poach, and if I can catch them I get more points.... ? :dunno: :bash:

How is it going to push people to poach? If someone wants to hunt deer they can still do so for about $45. If you can afford gas to drive to your hunting area, you should be able to afford $45 for a tag. If people don't have the money they don't have to apply for any special hunts. If you just want to hunt, you can buy a small game license and hunt grouse and coyotes. That's about, what, $38?
The people that are going to poach are the ones who would poach anyway, regardless of the price of a deer tag.

I totally agree :yeah:

They are playing a balancing game. They will continue to raise prices until they loose money, then they will hold off, expecting less hunters to spend more. In the end, I dont think they care about hunter numbers, instead focusing on the bottom line. :twocents:

Idaho sounds good.

I actually drew a second deer tag (Vashon Island) close to 15 years ago, just because I knew a landowner that HATED having deer on her property, they issued more of those tags than there were applicants.

We've had second tags out here for four or five years....
-
I think they are referring to the cost change and now bigger change. But I remember when they would sell you a second genral buck tag for 40. Tht b nice.
-
I do like drawing the second tag- but they increased the price by a factor of ~3, and on top of that have mandated that these second tags be all antlerless, even for units that were formerly "any deer" (where you'd suppose the goal is to reduce deer populations). These are not changes that make me a happier camper...
-
I'm thinking of the 2nd deer tags as "youth tags" now, because for kids the price is still only $22.
Great deal if you've got kids to get them two deer in one season!

Easy hunting if you have permission to hunt private property and the deer are pretty healthy. These arent the smaller Island deer that you get up North.

Great info ! I didnt know. My son will like that next year will be his first he'll turn 8 a few days before the season opens I figure it's a perfect time for him and we will be getting him a second deer tag for 22 bucks that's a deal and it will keep him interested to be successful.
-
So if second deer tags are "management" tags, we are essentially paying 68 bucks plus application fees to do the states dirty work :dunno:

Yep stupid. $68.00 for doe meat??? $$$ seems to be more important than science based management. I am not going to waste my $$.
-
Well $68 for 100 pounds of meat is cheaper than the $4/lb that you are going to pay in the store for beef. I will pay the fee when I draw the tag, since everyone else just wants to b*tch about the prices. Its called inflation and WDFW is just catching up with everything else. Either pay up or shut up, its that simple. :bash:
-
100 pounds of meat from a doe? Maybe with the bones in. :chuckle: Most of these so called second deer tags are filled with yearling does that don't have enough meat on them to make it worth while. What a waste of an animal.

Like I said, shut up or pay up. If you want to b*tch above the quality of the hunt, then dont apply.....really its that simple.
I will be hunting one of the mule deer units in Eastern WA. My wife shot a doe in that unit last year and we got 103 lbs of meat. I think you are referring to the "doggy" deer of the islands in the North Puget Sound area, which I will not be applying for.
-
I agree. A big muley doe would be worth 70. I could find a blacktail that was at least 80 pounds. Most are bigger than the spike bucks. My lady will be applying. Does it matter what genral tag you have??? Does it have to coincide with the second deer permit like it does the quality and buck??? I have Multi so I don't think I apply but I'm wondering for friends.
Bob

Yes, it has to coincide with your method of hunting. Several of the second tags are open to all methods of hunting if I remember correctly.
