What combo of the three would anyone suggest? I will be hunting high season out east and need a good quality setup. Don't want to get up top and have a failure. I would like a rangefinder with in the $400 range and about the same with the rifle I'm not sure what a good 10 x 50 scope goes for or should I get higher? I need help I've rifle hunted before but I have iron sights on my 3030. Would like to carry it but I limit my range so any rifle that puts lead 400 + yards on target is good with me just wondering what caliber is most accurate? Thanks

With the given info constraints...I think the scope is more than adequate for power at 10x50, brand would be more of a concern. I like to start with Leupold. There are plenty of models available. Note that if the tube is 1 inch vs 30 mm, the 50 may be easily substituted with anything 40-44mm.
For rangefinder, maybe a Lieca can be found for the $400 price, bushnells should be. The only complaint I have had with a lieca is the one lens (that receives the laser occasionally fogs), the viewing portion remain clear though.
For rifle, I guess you don't want to have to get closer with the .30-30, but you can extend the range with Leverevolution ammo. For a new rifle, it is hard to beat starting with a 30-06 or 270 or 280 or 7mm mag or 300 win mag.
-
I think 300 win mag is in the near future
-
Good Choice! Very versatile cartridge.

Do you know what the compact short barrels are ? 300 win short mag???? Are they less accurate or is the battle even shorter? My grandfather has one I should call him. Just thinking I could save weight with a compact. My girlfriend will be elk and deer huting with it as well she's small the 3030 was perfect size for her last year 15 yards head shot lol her first buck. Thanks for the info

huskima 5-20 with lieca 10-40 rangefinding binos :IBCOOL:
-
5x20 scope what distances do you shoot and w what cal?
-
5-20 scope is way overkill for shots out to 400 hundred yards. A good 4-12 range scope will be all you need. I would personally recommend a scope with bullet drop compensating dials (like Leupold's CDS). Cabela's has the Leupold vx-3 4.5-14x40 CDS for $589.99 online. I use this scope on my .30-06 and can shoot accurately to 500 yards.
A good pair of 12x50 binos along with a compact hand held rangefinder. You should be able to find great quality in each around $400

:yeah:
Good for anything you would ever want to hunt around here, okay, just about anywhere, has good range and plenty of power, lots of factory bullet choices, and probably as easy to find as .30/06, .270, etc, at places that sell ammo if you don't reload. That can't always be said for the speciality short and ultra mags and calibers.
I have it in a Remington 700 with a Leupold 3x9 and was able to put the entire package together, new in the box for less than $700.00.
Only thing I don't like is the plastic stock, feels too flimsly and cheap. Tried stiffening it up with some fiberglass reinforcement in the forearm area, but didn't help alot. So I found a walnut stock on ebay and am waiting for it to get here to swap them out, then will be good to go.
I would say head down to a well-stocked gun/sporting goods store and put some up to your shoulder and see how they feel. Lots of choices out there. Good luck and looking forward to some pics of your set-up and the results of your hunt!

Thanks guys what or is there a 300 win short mag???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.300_WSM
Give this a try.....
-
Nice! Sounds like the WSM is a lot better for hiking and has greater inherent accuracy due to the primer igniting the larger surface area of the powder more consistently. Thanks for the info I'll post pics after I get it set up.

5x20 100-1000 yards 6.5x284. I think you will like the 300 wsm . my kid has a tikka t3 in.300wsm with a 3x9 leupod . I think i'm gonna put my nikon 4x12 on it I really like the 4x12s .
-
Sweet ! I was just thinking 10 x 50 cause my binocs are 10 x50 ??? :dunno: but I guess a 4 x 12 is what I need lol. I want drop comp marks does the Nikon offer that in 4x12? And is the 6.5 x 284 the feild of view on the 5x20? What's it mean ? Thanks again I'm gonna have it dialed out to six hundred way before season!

I am thinking that the 6.5x284 he is referring to is the norma long range cartridge. The 5x20 is the variable power for the scope.
The difference in shooting between 400 and 600 yds is big (not just 200 yds :chuckle:). It really does take either some hidden natural talent or a lot of practice to play out that far not just equipment. I'd look into getting into a LR shooting class or talk to some LR guys. In addition to accurate rangefinging at those distances, you'll also need to be able to measure the angle of your shot, maybe even a hand held wind wizard.
-
I plan on the wind indicator and lots and lots of practice I'll film it and post it gimme a couple months.
-
cartridge overall length is 72.64mm, cartridge case is 53.34mm in length and the bullet diameter is .308 in (7.82mm), which is common to all U.S. .30 calibre cartridges
That's from wiki I don't think the 6.5 x284 he spoke of was that.

Your binoculars are 10 "power" with 50 millimeter objective lenses. (10x50)
When you're talking about a rifle scope that is a 4x12, that is a scope with a variable power of 4 to 12. I don't like writing it as "4x12." That would mean 4 "by" 12, when it should be 4 "to" 12. So it should be "4-12." Then if it's a 50 millimeter objective it would be 4-12x50 or with a 40 millimeter objective lens a 4-12x40. (4 to 12 by 40 not 4 by 12 by 40)
The 6.5 x 284 is the name of a rifle cartridge, just like the 300 WSM is the name of the cartridge.
And the 5x20 should probably be written 5-20.
Hope I helped and didn't confuse you more than you already are.

You might want to look at a Burris laser range finder scope. It is a pretty fugly looking thing but the nice thing is put the cross hairs on the animal push the mountable switch that you can mount anywhere on your stock and it calculates everything for you and puts the cross hairs on the animal at the correct range. The only thing it doesn't do is wind. Watch Wild and Raw on the outdoor channel they use one alot. Just my :twocents: Here is the link http://www.burrisoptics.com/laserscope.html (http://www.burrisoptics.com/laserscope.html)

Thanks for explaining that. I think it is good for people to get the nomenclature correct. It really does help to use the correct terms. 8)

Not confused thanks man. I know what 10-50 is just wrote it wrong. I didn't know a 4-12 was suitable for long range shots. I am excited to put my archery skills to use hunting up high. Should be able to connect with a good one.

You guys are making this to confusing. To start off, if you don't reload I wouldn't buy a 300 wsm. Shells are to expensive. I would buy a 30-06 and put a 3-9x40 or a 4-12 x40 scope on it. Sight it in a 200 yards and you shouldn't have to aim off the hair even out to 400 yards. I would look for a complete package. Buy a used setup that has a good quality scope on it. In this economy you shoould be able to find a really nice setup complete for 6 or 700 bucks.

I totally agree with that. I was confused by the original question and wasn't quite sure what he was asking, or what he was looking for. But yes, a 30-06 is all a guy needs, along with a 3-9x40 scope. That's the combination I always recommend to people. It's good out to as far as most people have any business shooting, cost is reasonable, and recoil is not excessive.

Thanks brant. I will be getting a used 300 WSM and scope ....... I'm not sure yet like I said I want the drop compensation marks probably go with a Nikon due to $ being a little less and my binos are Nikon and seem quality for my price range. I'm not worried about price of rounds. My girlfriend plans on deer and elk hunting with this setup this year she's not worried about recoil.... Well she weighs 100 pounds soooo it might rock her but she's tough. Even with th wsn I will probably only take 200 -400 yard shots I hunt ethical and would never attempt a shot from a range I wasn't confident at 40 yards was my archery range last year I can target shoot my bow out to 70 so if I can hit the target at 600 I'll probably feel confident at 400 in the feild hunting. Thanks for the help. I will post it and some video after I get it on the range.

Bob, put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. My son put one on his short mag and it made a lot of difference.

How is the tikka t3 in tha cal performance wise? I found a used one first one said $550 is that about what I should expect the ticket to be? I think it had scope rings.
-
The Tikka is very accurate. Pricing sounds ok. See if you can find one local from a private party. That will save you from having to pay shipping, FFL, and sales tax. Go on to www.24hourcampfire.com and keep your eyes open for a used nikon scope. Maybe someone here will have one. Don't worry about buying used. They are a lifetime warranty.
