Hey guys my dad just found out after 12 years he drew an Archery AZ unit 1, 2B, 2C elk tag. Just looking to see if anyone on here has drawn this tag or hunted the unit. Any info would be awesome, this is definatly a hunt worth doing our homework for :).

Can't help you on the area, but congrats, and good luck to him.

Congrats on the tag! Very Nice!

I am no help in that state but best on luck to him! Hope he scores!

I grew up over there. Lots of quality animals. They had a big fire last year in unit 1, my dad says it did a good number on the habitat but didn't get very many animals. Check out http://www.sneekfreaktv.com/?m=1 Jed is an awesome source of information on northern AZ bulls.

Hey thanks ATC, we can only hope the fire will improve the elks habitat with some new growth but i guess i wont no for sure until septeber 14 ;)

Here is another thought...
Hire someone to fly you over the unit a few days before the start of hunting season.
Next couple of days go to those areas that you saw when you were flying and figure it out.

in 2002 there was a huge fire in the 3a/3b areas in Northern AZ, it took about 5 years for the wildlife to really come back. In 2009 my dad arrowed this 349 inch bull in the 3B area and a 305 in in 2010 (yeah he got drawn 2 years in a row, people were ready to string him up). The Mulies have made a good comeback, there are a lot more deer then when I was growing up for sure, mostly due to the new growth resulting from the fire.
If you've never spent time down there find a guide, look for a word of mouth local guys. Guys like Jed know those animals like their own kids. Ill give the old man a shout and see who he knows in the Springerville area.

You can see the burned trees in the background on the top picture.

Those are some nice bulls ATC really apreciate the effort :)

If you want to PM me, I have a guide to recommend who grew up in Springerville and knows Unit 1 very well.
