Title: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: Ripper on April 13, 2012, 01:40:34 PM
Well kid's we will see how this goes. I've seen some other people do this, so let's see if my writing skills can keep your attention. It's my first time, so be kind.  :chuckle:
So I drew a Monroe spring bear tag, got my packet with maps, a key and some words of advice from the DNR. Wednesday myself and FC went out to scout for the first time. We hit some area's fairly close to where I live that showed moderate tree damage last year. The maps from DNR have the area's highlighted for slight, moderate and heavy damage from the year before. We saw plenty of last years peel's but nothing fresh except for a totally ripped up stump. The tree's around there were untouched this spring. It's awesome having that key, we could go where no one else could go unless they walked.
Today I went out by myself. It was a cool crisp morning with frost, but as the sun climbed higher, the temps rose and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Didn't see any sign at all today. Saw a few deer tracks and some nice sized rubs from last fall, just nothing that said bruin. I talked to a guy working in the area, he stopped to make sure I had permission to be in there. I showed him my paperwork and key, so all was good. He said he hadn't seen any bears this spring yet but that there are a lot in the area. So my hopes are high, I can't wait till Sunday. I will update this thread whenever I get out, plus I will start carrying my camera. Pic's make everything better. Hopefully this thread ends with some kill shot's. Stay tuned!

Good I'm still alive on here.  From the lack of post's I'd say everyone else had the same kind of day as me. I thoroughly enjoyed the sunshine, even spent part of the day hunting in a t-shirt, but no bears! We started out between Granite Falls and Lake Roesiger. Hiked in a couple of miles, checked some reprod area's, checked out a few over grown spur roads, nothing. There were some old peel's but nothing fresh. No poo, no tracks, nothing. We hiked in behind a few gate's, drove in behind some where my key worked then got out and hiked. Nothing. We ended up the day up by Spada Lake, wanted to see if there was any sign up higher near the snow. Nope! Nothing. I'd say we put at least 7 miles on the boots. It was surprising how little animal activity we saw at all. I think we only saw 1 chipmunk all day! I ran into another member from the site, washelkhtr, and he hadn't seen any sign either. Oh well, our seasons continue. I'm going to post some pics of the tree damage I found in a small area about 30 yards in diameter. Looks like it was from last year at least. There is also a pic of a pile of rodent bones that the tree peeler probably pooped out while straining to peel the bark.  :chuckle: I have some maintenance to do on my chainsaw today, then I'll probably hit it tomorrow before work. Good luck everyone.

Well someone named bearbait should know. What is it then, porcupine? If so then that area must be overloaded with the prickly buggers. There are hundreds of these types of peels all over that area.

Looks like bear to me. From what I understand, porcupine chip away the bark and bear peel the bark. I think you've found the right area, now find the bear

Are those cedars?  I didn't know bears ate on the cedars as well as firs.  No tag for me, I'll just have more time to lingcod fish.   :chuckle:  Good luck!

Don't know if I've seen bear peels on a cedar  :dunno:
Title: Re: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: Michelle_Nelson on April 17, 2012, 09:55:22 AM
Yes, Bears will peel Cedars.  They will also peel Hemlock.  Just not as much as they do the Firs.  I've only found a few compared to the Firs.

If you guys have never read "The Education of a Bear Hunter" or "Flowers and Bears" by Ralph Flowers you really should.  He talks about the times he went to other countries and the types of trees the Bears peel there.
Title: Re: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: bobcat on April 17, 2012, 09:58:09 AM
I've seen lots and lots of bear peeled trees, and never a cedar tree, until last year. I found two or three freshly peeled cedar trees. Previously all I had seen had been Douglas fir. One of the cedars that got peeled was a big one, about 28 inch diameter, and I had a trail camera about 10 feet away about pointed in the wrong direction.   :bash:

Title: Re: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: plottwalker on April 17, 2012, 10:41:09 AM
they peel fir, cedar, and hemlock, normally hemlock are first to start running, and might get hit before firs, porkys chew the bark, normally side ways, if you look close you can see the small teeth marks, bear normallypeel the bark off,and scrap down the tree with there teeth, some times side ways but longer motions then porkys. alot of the times the porkys hit the tops of the tree where the tree grows first, and the bear will sometime strip all the way up, but normally stick to the bottom 1/2 of the tree(depending on size). bears and porkys will also test trees this time of year before they peel, normally a silver dollar size at the base of the tree, might even see a few neiboring trees tested.

both those are good books to read.
Title: Re: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: Ripper on April 17, 2012, 01:53:45 PM
Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. I was wondering about ceders also so I looked it up and yes they will hit ceders. I saw a bunch of hemlocks in that area and plenty of firs also. All the peels looked the same. Shredded up and down to the ground. You could see the claw and teeth marks if you looked close. I'm glad someone mentioned the silver dollar sized test bites, because I've been seeing those fairly regularly. I didn't know what they were. I guess I have seen some fresh sign, I just didn't know it. I don't look like too much of a rookie do I?  :chuckle:
Yes I'm learning on the run. Anyway, ready for the good new's?   I found fresh poo! Yes I did, and I can tell you I have never been more excited to see fresh poo ever before!  :IBCOOL:  So I drove up into an area I checked last week that had ton's of old peels. I only had a little time before work and this was my best option. I came up over a little rise and there is this very healthy blacktail standing in the road about 60 yards away. I throw the glasses on him and yup, he's a buck. No horns yet but the nubs are starting to show. After he heads of into the brush I continue on. So I drive about 11 miles all around back there, glassing, doing a little walking. According to my map I should come out at another gate. I wouldn't have gone all the way if there wasn't another gate because the brush was tearing up the side of my truck. I finally get to the gate and my key wont open it. So I look at the sign on the other side and it says Private Property, NO TRESPASSING! :yike: So there I am on the wrong side of the sign. I have to tell ya, there is no rhyme or reason to where these keys will work. This is the second time I have opened and drove through a gate to find one that I can't open at the other end. Anyway, I backed up about 50 yards to a spot I could turn around and headed back. The good news is , now I have matching scratches on both side of my truck! :bash:
So I drive all the way back to where I started and there are a couple piles of poo on the side of the road about 80 yards from the main road. One pile is the size of a small horse and the other is about the size of moose pellets. In the mud are the tracks of a sow and a cub. I have got to tell ya, I am really fired up now, not that I would shoot a sow or a cub, It's the excitement of knowing there are some bears out and about. After that I saw 4 more deer out in a pasture and this was at 12:15! If I didn't have a class at work tonight I would have stayed out all day till dark. The critters were definitely on the move today. I can't wait to get back out there.

Here is a little snippet that I read from the dept of agriculture about bear damage.

Scattered remnants of bark
strewn at the base of a tree and vertical
tooth marks indicate bear activity. Occasionally
a tree will be “frilled,” with bark
strips loosened at the base and pulled up
away from the tree. These strips may
hang from more than 5 meters up on
some trees, such as western red cedar

I took a little drive today before work, I just wanted to check a few gates to see if my key worked. Not a chance. Cambell group must not want us to help that much if they won't even let us drive in. Granted, I don't mind walking, actually enjoy it, but it would sure help in the retrieval process.
Enough grumbling. So on my way home I spot this yote out in a field. It's pouncing and jumping and having a good time. I almost pulled over to take a shot but there was quite a bit of traffic on Hwy 2 this afternoon!  :yike:

The gate was open today H2O, but I think the Timber Guy's were in there. I checked my key in both locks and it didn't work. Oh well, I'm going to go out tomorrow some where, just haven't made up my mind yet. Probably where I saw the sow and cub tracks the other day. Maybe I'll just shoot the cub and make me a hat or a pillow out of the hide. Could probably cook the whole thing in my rotisserie!   :chuckle:

Oh...there have been a few. Acuatlly....a few guys on the forum have tagged a cub intentionally. I think one guy came across one bawling over his dead momma and he popped him. I don't remember the other reason but both guys said that the circumstances were that if they didn't take the cub out it could have been a slow and painfull death for it. They both had a full mount done. One was a mount that they kept on the floor of the living room...kind of curled up and sleeping. The other was mounted to be able to lay across the shelf like it was just lounging. Both were upstanding reasons to tag a smaller bear and both made the best of it.

I like the little curled up bear mount better than my old idea of a pillow case if you ever got stuck in that situation.

Yes they were cutting in there. I about got mowed over by a truck full of logs on my way up the road. I went to the next gate up and hiked around for a while in there. Saw some pretty good area, just nothing that told me they were out and about yet. Went to a "high damage area" on the way back and same deal, nada.

Another day, another bunch of miles on the boots, no bears! I went out today with H2Ohunter and FC. We hiked, and hiked, and glassed, and hiked and glassed some more. Nothing. Did a little driving around, glassed, nothing. Oh well, it was a beautiful day, enjoyed the sun and good company. Went home and washed the boat. Gotta get it ready for lingcod season. I will take a little hike tomorrow morning before work. I am going to keep at it as often as I can. It's just a matter of time. I will be successful, I want me some bear meat!

Nah.....nothing wrong with three grown men.....walking and talking...sweating it up......changing shirts every now and then....commenting on each others "pants ventilation options". Taking a drive way up in the hills...

It was fun. I enjoyed hanging out with Ripper and FC....good guys both of them. Hope to get out and do some more fishing and hunting with either.

Also....I mentioned the smoke salmon...that is worth the trip right there if Ripper brings that along.

I saw the discussion about cubs. My wife shot this cub when I was out of state since I wouldn't let her shoot one when I was around. I have to admit it's one of the neatest mounts in the house.

Ok let's try this again. Either it's my computer or the site but my last 3 post didn't come through. :dunno: I hunted a couple of times last week briefly before work and this chewed up old log was the only thing I found. The log is about 10 inches in diameter. Do you think it was a bear or some other critter? I also saw this tree with a little nibble on it. I have heard that the bears will sample the tree's for sugar content early on so what do you guy's think?

I didn't hunt over the weekend because the family needed a little get away. We went down to Longview and sturgeon fished on the Columbia. We caught a few undersized fish, but no keepers. It was a fun little trip and I hope to get back down soon. I'll post a couple of pic's of our smallest sturgeon ever, barely 20 inches and a 35 incher. I have to add another in my Huntahaulics hoody, gotta give the guy's some support.

Yep, both are bear.  Yes the bears peel the bark off the base of the trees to get to the cambium layer(sugar) which kills the trees and is the reason why you have a spring bear tag, to help the tree farms save some trees!

Burrrr, I just got in from  3 hour hunt in the driving rain.  I did see 3 deer today on my way in, so that got my spirits up. The only bear sign I saw was Iabout the most chewed up log  that I've ever seen, but in the driving rain I wasn't about to take out the cell phone for a pic! I had a spot that I've been wanting to walk for a while, but the wind is always bad. Today I got out early and walked in with the wind at my back. I then took a seat on a stump for about 45 minutes and started working my way back to my truck. I still hunted all the way back with the wind and rain in my face. It took about 2 hours to get back, and I got there right at dark. It seemed like the most perfect hunt ever to me but the bears didn't think so. I'm off to the hot tub now to get warmed up and I'll be back to it on Sunday. It's going to happen soon, I just know it. This is the first time I've been able to devote so much time hunting, and I'm loving it. Good luck to the rest of you.

Well thanks for turning around, but there was nothing there anyway! :chuckle: I trekked back in there, got down into the thick on the right side of the road. I saw some major stumps and log damage, but no poo, peels or fresh tracks. That's my second trip into that area lately. I saw a couple of deer on my way in and plenty of deer tracks. Lot's of yote sign back there also. Did you guy's find any fresh sign?

Yesterday was a good day. Like everyone has been saying, after May 1 things will pick up. We were running a little late Sunday so a change of plans took us to a spot closer to home. It's the same spot as the old peels from the start of this thread. Didn't see anything on the old skid road we were on, but I spotted a real fresh peel inside the trees, down by a creek. Close examination told us that it couldn't have been more than an hour old at the most. It was as if the bark had just been removed. It hadn't even begun to seep yet! We made our way further down the trail and cut back in trying, unsuccessfully, to remain quiet. I had just whispered to FC, We sure aren't going to sneak up on anything, :chuckle: when I caught movement to the right. I turned just in time to see a young bear turn his head away and move out of sight about 35 yards away! :yike: That'll get your blood a pumping! I brought up my rifle but never got a look at the body. It had a long skinny neck and smallish head, so I assumed it was a young bear. We never heard it run off so I guess it just walked away. I just got one of Ricks calls and blew on it a few times just to see if it would respond, but no it didn't. Exciting chit right there! found more fresh peels back there then got out to let things calm down. I'll go back there in a few days to see if there has been anymore activity.

Then it was off to another spot I had been to last week. This is where I saw the freshest poo yet. A big steamy pile right in the road the size of my boot! We also saw some fresh peels in this area too, but no bears. We did find a cute little salamander under a log. He was cold and lethargic, but I'm sure it warmed up as the day went on. The day wound up being very warm and sunny. Hunted most of it in just a T-shirt. Had a good time and with the sighting and fresh sign, my spirits are sky high.

The thing running through my mind when you turned to whisper to me was that we could call ourselves team CRUNCH, seemed kind of laughable to whisper but we obviously got closer than either of us thought we could to a bear  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

That soft dirt covered in tons of old dead sticker bushes and twiggy crap all over just makes it impossible to move quietly.

Good day to all my hunting homies out there. I dropped my 12 yo son off at school this morning at 8:00 like I do everyday, then it off to hunt there wily bears. My plan was to go back to where I the one on Sunday. I was going to sneak in as quietly as possible and sit for a few hours before work. Well with the wind screaming out of the west, that wasn't going to happen! Plan B, go back to where I saw some fresh poop and peels from Sunday afternoon. I drive in, park the truck and what do you know,  the wind is perfect. So I glass this open clear cut for a while but since it was sunny and windy, I didn't expect to see anything out in the open. I hike my way around to a trail that I saw a couple of hippy hikers come out of Sunday, and the trail splits. Their tracks led to the right , so I took the trail to the left. Wind was perfect, right in my face. This is an awesome trail, narrow, overgrown, lined with grass, perfect! So I still hunt this trail and I found fresh droppings and 3 freshly peeled tree's. It's too bad I had to go to work because this is the kind of place we spring bear hunters dream about. It took me 2 hours to cover about 1/2 mile, then I hiked out in 8 minutes. I think I may take Friday off to hunt since I have to work this weekend. The bruins are awake and on the move, I predict more pics and stories to come this week. Maybe I will even have some success on Friday. I have my fingers crossed.

I've been checking out youtube bear calling videos and what I was doing wrong is not calling enough. My cadence was more like deer rattling and grunting. A little here and a little there. I need to really blast on it consistently for 15-30 minutes at a time. Tomorrow morning can't get here soon enough. I will be looking out over a clear cut at first light, then heading down the overgrown trail shortly after. If I don't see anything then I'll pull out Rick's call and go to town on it! I bought a can of bear spray at Cabela's today. I'd rather pepper spray a young or female bear than shoot it. Until tomorrow, good luck to ya.

I would call no less than 30 minutes min.,  more like 45 to an hour.  Put a watch out in front of you, because trust me calling for that long is work and about 20 minutes into your thinking it's already been an hour.  I carry pepper spray for just that reason and had to use it once on a smaller sow.  She came in hungery and was drooling, and she wasn't taking no for an answer.  This is just my opinion, if you hear a bear coming in they are generally larger boars.  They are the big boys on the block and don't care who can hear them coming in.  Most of the time the small to mid-size bears just suddenly appear.  They can even slip in, look things over and leave without you ever knowing they were there.  I believe they don't want to waltz in and get the arse kicked by something much bigger than them.  I have caught two bears leaving, had no idea how long they had been standing there...and they were both within 15 yards when I seen them turn around and leave.

Sorry fella's nothing yet. This morning was a chilly 32 degrees when I got out at my hunt spot. I hunted till 12:30 then  I had to take an afternoon break to go pick up my boat.I couldn't do the hunt I wanted because of the wind so it was plan B. I found some brand new peels but that was it. I tried Ricks call twice. Once for 45 minutes then again for 30. I called in a deer on my second set so my calling must not suck too bad!  :chuckle: It's really warm out now about 64 at my house, so I think I'll sneak in a quick nap then head back out. Just kidding,  No kill today. I am really tired, I put a lot of miles on today. This afternoon I decided to give the other area a break since i've hunted it a few times this week. The area I did hunt, I haven't been into since the season opened , and it's just as dead today as it was then. Nothing happening up behind the gate on Scotty Road. It was highlighted as a moderate tree damage area last year but there is nothing going on this year. There really isn't that much old tree damage up there. I will download my pics from this morning and post them tomorrow. I have to work the weekend, so I will not be hunting till Monday at the soonest. I hope to see some other peoples success pics soon. Woo Hoo my first thread to hit 10 pages!   :IBCOOL: Thanks peeps.  :chuckle: Here are a couple of pics from yesterday. The handsome young man at the Lake is me, and the other is a peel I found on the way. A word of advice to others out there to make sure you know the boundaries of the hunt. After I finished this hunt I went over my maps to look for different areas and noticed that the lake is outside the boundaries. The start of the trail is ok to hunt, but somewhere along the way it goes outside. I have no Idea where the line in the sand is, but I wont go to the lake again.
Does anyone have any idea how this heat is going to affect movement? Will they go nocturnal? Will they stick to the thick growth along creak beds? That's where I'm seeing most of the sign anyway, but I think on cool rainy days they will move more in daylight. Good luck to the other tag holders and I will be out again on Monday.

Is it behind the same gate?   There is a lake behind that gate you can walk into.

I spent a few hours out in the woods today. I went to the very promising spot that I got the pic's from last week. Too bad the wind wouldn't cooperate. I picked this spot just because of the wind direction, however back in the thick stuff it was swirling real bad. I hiked in anyway to where I saw the fresh sign last week just to see if there was anymore. Not a thing, in fact I couldn't find any fresh sign yesterday or today. It's as if the warm weather has them holed up somewhere. It's supposed to cool off the rest of the week so maybe that will get them moving again. Has anyone else been seeing anything lately? There is only 2 weeks left so I gotta get it done soon. I'll be out tomorrow and again on Saturday. I hope to get it done so I can take the boat out. It's really not happy about me not using it!

Thanks Bowman, I thought I may not be seeing anything  because I can't get out till after I take my son to school at 8:00. Then I hunt till noon and go to work. I haven't even seen fresh sign for the last 4 or 5 days. Oh well, I'll keep at it.

This post alone has inspired me to put in for spring bear next year.  Id ask to join but I live way far south.  Im sure if you keep at it like you have you'll get a shot at one.  What spring permit would anyone suggest for the olympics area?  I'm gonna go north cascades in August and try to shoot one this year.

Even if I don't get one it was still worth putting in for. It is awesome to get out and hunt big game in the spring. Plus I've learned so much about this area that I didn't know. I had no idea there was so much public land this close to my house. Just the info the DNR gives you is priceless. And having the key to the gates so you can drive in and scout. I'm telling you, I think my success rate on deer and bear is going to go up every year from now on just because of this tag. If you lived closer I would take you along for sure.

It's good for the sport to continue having people interested, but this is an example of why we need to be careful on area's that get mentioned.  Ripper I wish you the best of luck on your tag, but can you be careful as to mention certain area's?  Bear hunting is a species that hasn't been too popular. The general area you're hunting can't sustain an increase in hunting pressure during the general season.  All the talk on this board is going to add numerous vehicles at every gate!

*WARNING* Expanding the sport of hunting by sharing information will be detrimental to us all.  Hoard your information.  Especially do not tell children, would hate for them to grow up wanting to hunt and therefore increasing competition for all of us.  Also, the general bear season is only 4 months long and they only live in 3/4 of the state, please tell NOBODY because I'm sure I won't be able to find anywhere to go!

K, but seriously, if you screw up and tell someone your favorite spot that is your own fault and now you're just a generous person... If you get drawn for the Monroe special permit, there's a pretty good chance you are hunting in close proximity to other people who also drew and might *gasp* actually see another hunter.  There are only so many gates... so without Ripper telling anyone any extra information, its not that hard to figure out.  There are also bears nearly everywhere else.  Chill, share the love, lend a helping hand on occasion.  I promise it won't kill ya.

(Hint, huge giveaway here, the Monroe special permit hunt is within a 100 mile radius of Monroe, there are some bears in the area...) ;)

It was dead so it was only momentary concern.  I carry the terrorist snubby because I needed a practical application for a sweet machine gun.  Since it was .308 hunting was that practical application.

Now the .44 mag... thats a different story.  Kittys inspired that purchase.

Wow lot's of activity since my last visit, don't you ever shut up H2O?  :chuckle: I'd have to read back through the whole post to know for sure but what gates did I mention? The last one I mentioned was Scotty Road, but that place is a dead zone right now. I don't know, I don't think I gave away any secrets. I've been out by Kellogg Lake, Spada Lake, Lake Reosiger, Lake Chaplain, Woods Lake, I've been all over the hunt area and I don't think I have once said exactly where I was. If I remember right, there are vehicles parked at every gate in the state come August. There are lot's of bears out there, that's why they give out special permits like this.

Any way, today I went in the Gate at 7924 Woods Creak Rd, you know the yellow one with the lock on it that I can open with my special key. So I drove in 5/8 of a mile and took a left at the big broken Fir tree. I went 1.1 mile to the grassy road off to the right. I walked in about 100 yards and the were 6 bears all sitting there eating a hiker and drinking his beer.  :yike: I was so startled that I couldn't decide which one to shoot, so I just turned around and ran back to my truck and went home. I think I'm done hunting for the year but you guy's feel free to go get em!   :chuckle: :chuckle:

OK now the real story. FC and I headed out for a morning hunt. With the wind direction I chose a spot I hadn't been too before. No I'm not telling you where. OK it was C-Post,  :chuckle: My key worked in this gate so we drove in a way, then walked a few spur roads. Found a cub track and I was excited, I really wanted to see it. Never did and didn't see mama either. I forgot my phone so hopefully FC will post a pic. Did 30 minutes of calling in a promising looking spot, but nothing today. Next week I'm working day's so I'm looking forward to some evening hunts. Maybe that will change my luck. H2O, I hope you're all talked out so I can have some peace and quiet on Saturday!

Sweet!

Sorry...no peace and quiet! I've got a cub distress call. Figured we could do a little sitting and calling in some of the areas. Maybe if we altrenate types and duration of calls we can keep at and bring something in. I'll feel a lot better calling knowing you are looking around and have the shooter. Vice versa as well. I'll carry my .45 for backup while calling. I've got my general distress that makes some good sound and a cub distress that is new.

I'm serious about your sandwich order. You can PM me your ideal fixings and I'll make it happen.

Don't worry D-Rock I put a quarter on the gate for my trespass fee!  :chuckle: H2O I like fresh smoked turkey breast on whole grain bread, pepper jack cheese, a little mayo and mustard, sweet butter leaf lettuce, tomato and pepperoncini's, no seeds. In a ziplock bag, not wrapped in foil. Or you can just bring PB&J, what ever's easiest.

I had nothing bear like on my last check. Also, saw no sign. Lots of good green stuff growing that you would think would draw them in. Not sure about that area. My bike has a flat on the front....damn thorns. Also...from walking in with FC and you the other time I'm sure we would miss important sign by booking along. I think the pace of the last hunt was good....especailly in the thicker stuff with you leading and looking. I'll bring my camera along with the calls. I'd be jacked as well if we can call one in. Sounds like more fun as well if there are two of us.

Bears like to peel 8-15 inch tree's. They always seem to be around those area's. They like grass. Hand calls will work better put emotion into the call. Rick

Just finished 4 antler call's. These are very bad azz for awsome Raspy distress and do the slower wa   wa   wa  wa for Fawn distress. Rick

Lots of times the does come charging in all amped up and darting back and forth trying to locate the injured fawn.  It's really funny to mess with their minds!  I've had them run in 20 feet looking around all frantic, they leave, I call again and here they come running back in.

I can't wait to get off work today. I have a dark nasty overgrown hole I'm going to sit in till something comes in for me to shoot. Yuk that sounds kinda nasty!  :chuckle: Let me reword that. I know of a spot that is over grown, dark and next to a creek. It is kinda hard to get into without making a lot of noise. I saw some new peels in there the other day, so today I want to sneak in there after work and sit till dark with the hopes that the tree peeler will show himself so I can shoot him. Yes that sounds a lot better.
D-Rock, I'm shooting 139g Hornady SST's.
Woodman, nice vid. I hope to see something like that in person tonight.  That looks similar to the spot I'm going to.

Yes it is Machias, my first spring bear. I shot one in the fall 2 years ago. So far that's my only one. It's a different feeling walking up on a dead bear than a deer. I had a little bit more anxiety. I can't wait to feel that again.

Ridder, I hope you don't mind. I have a question for calling black bear on wet side.
Advise on whether or not a white tail fawn in distress would work. I have been using raccoon in distress,
And called in bobcat both times I tried it. I am walking monro unit soon. And going to start calling before dark. Any impute? Thanks.

Any distress call can and will work.  I have called in several bears with a javelina call.  Not many of those running around in the woods here in WA and ID.  I personally like Bearmanric's and Rainshadow's calls and I like their raspy loud calls.  I think for bear they convey bigger game than the higher pitch of a cottontail, however a cottontail call will work, I know this for a fact.  Put alot of emotion and distress into your call, whatever type the box says it is, that is the key, IMHO.

Your not alone
I've taken this tag pretty serious and from what I've seen years past by May 18th we should have a bear.  What sucks about this tag is every time I Speak about my spring bear permit someone mentions a bear in their yard yesterday, like there crawling around everywhere.   The truth of the matter is they're right, except where I'm hunting.  I've been out 8 times so far and I hunt my A#$ off till noon then spend 3 hours driving around looking for fresh sign.  Mind you we all have DNR keys so where back in the hills,  driving can be productive hunting and searching for fresh sign.  From the look of Rippper's post he's been hunting twice as hard as me and I've put in some time and there is not allot out presently.  I'm going to hunt tomorrow,  Good luck to all.

Machias, thank you for input. I called for 45 min. Seen two yotes. Think I will pack the call. But save it for getting a located bear closer. Going to switch back to walking, I have seen more when moving around.

Ripper, how did you do last night?

Title: Re: Ripper's Spring Bear Log
Post by: Ripper on May 19, 2012, 10:01:38 PM
I will be on day's all next week I will hunt everyday except Wed. My son has a dr appt at 6:00.

These last couple of days my enemy has been the wind. I sat the thick stuff an Friday with the plan to sit until dark. I got in there about 2:00. Snuck in as quietly as I could and just sat still for about an hour. The wind swirled then changed directions on my so I decided to reposition. It's really thick and nasty in there and any movement you made is noisy as can be. After sitting for about 15 minutes the wind is at my back.  Grrrrr I decide to just sit it out knowing it will change again. It did but after a while it was pointless to sit the any longer. It just wasn't going to happen. I packed up and got out of there.

I called my girlfriend and had her meet me with my son and we did some road hunting. I thought with the wind like it was that it would be a good excuse to explore new territory and spend time together as a family. We found some nice grassy spur roads that we tried to walk, but no matter what direction the wind was when when we stared it always ended up at our back. I had the same thing happen today when H2O and I tried to hunt. Every single time the wind was all over the place. Found a big fresh pile of poo today, saw a beaver and a deer and that was it. Had some fun with the deer, it was directly down wind from us but it still started walking right toward us. We started doing some kissing sounds and that him in to about 35 yards before he changed his mind and walked off. Oh yea we also had an encounter with a love struck grouse. It came charging down the road at us in full mating display. Quite funny.

I'm sleeping in tomorrow then maybe going out in the evening. I may have to hire C-Post guide service, I've heard good things about him.

No luck last night, but we did see a bunch of deer. Saw two bucks, one looked like he has potential to be something special. Saw a bunch, close to a dozen new peels so they are definitely getting real active. It's just a matter of time. I hope not too much time cause I'm running out of it. Thank you so much for all the support, it means a lot to me.

Yup, it was cool and uplifting to see all those peels. that bear is either super active or there are a few in that area. We got dumped on big time, by the time I got home I was soaked to the bone and a tad bit chilly! I didn't get home till almost 11:00, then had to get up at 4:00 to come to work. I'm fighting to stay awake today. I'm not a very active participant in our work group study today. :chuckle: I think I'll be taking a nap after work then try to get out for a couple hours before dark.

Sorry it took so long to post. Yesterday really felt like the day. The sun came out after all that rain, I had a fresh trail through the tall wet grass, giant pile of poo in the grass........I was going to sit up there all day. Then the wind got squirrely on me. Swirled around a bit then flat did a 180 on me. That's when I decided to go to another spot. As I walked out I came across a tree that a bear did his scent marking on and broke off a big branch. I will post up some pic's later. I'm at work now. It was an exciting day, but no kill.

Way to work at it, and it's a good thing to have more that one hobby you love.
Go fishing, if all someone liked doing was hunting. Washington would be the wrong state to live in.

I'm back from Westport and getting ready for an evening hunt. Looks like others have had success over the weekend so I have my fingers crossed. I hunted hard Thursday and Friday eve's. Found fresh sign, trails in the grass, fresh poo and peel's but no bears. I will hunt hard this eve and tomorrow then I will be out of hunting time. It's the 2 minute warning, so I can't fold under pressure. Here some pics from the last 2 day's I hunted.
this is the trail in the grass I was following.
The next is of some giant poop
Then there is the broken limb that happened sometime in the hour since I passed it.
can someone tell me what kind of criier this head belonged too. Has long chompers like a beaver. The head was the size of a ferret head.

I'm hoping you tag a biggun. That would be so sweet to nail one last minute. Either way what a good hunt!

I've been saying a lot of prayers lately!  :chuckle: Whatever I've done to piss off the bear god's I'm sorry. My karma can't be totally bad because I had a great trip to Westport.

I've been seeing sign everywhere I go, I just can't seem to find the bears themselve's. Today is my last full day to hunt, the rest of the week will just be short trips before work. I just need 1 dumb one to show itself.

Has anyone ever seen an aspen peel? Yesterday I saw 7 aspens in a row peeled spread out over about 150 yard line.

Yup, I just finished eating tag soup! :chuckle: I went out yesterday morning and sat in the rain in a dark hole full of fresh peels. The skeeters were so bad I couldn't believe it. Even with a head net on it was unbearable. I stuck it out for 2 hours then I had to go to work. My plan was to work till 6 then head out and hunt till dark. Well 2 hours into my shift I started having chest pains. I had aortic valve replacement surgery 2 years ago so this was a pain that I've felt before. I immediately left work and went to the Everett clinic. Needless to say bear season was over. I spent about 3 hours being checked out and I'm happy to say the ticker is good. I have Costochronditis, or inflammation of the joint between the ribs and the breast bone, and ribs to spine. I swear it hurts as bad as when I had Periocarditis which is inflammation of the heart liner. That was the most painful thing I've ever experienced.
Anyway, it was a great hunt, I'm glad I had the opportunity to get out in the spring and hunt. I learned a lot about bear hunting, and all the new area's I didn't know existed. I can't wait till August1. I have 3 area's that I will be scouting all summer long. I will post a pick of the biggest bear poop I have ever seen! It made my butt hurt just looking at it! :yike:  :chuckle: To bad it's located in an area that's 10.5 miles in from the gate, and it there is a lot of elevation change. It would be a very difficult mountain bike ride in and out. The pack out would be murderous. If anyone wants to tackle it pm me and I'll tell you where it is. Thank all of you so much for the support. It's so cool to be a part of this forum with all the good people giving tips and advice. It is disappointing to not kill a bear, but the knowledge gained is invaluable. Congrats to all the people who did score, I'm happy for you. I will definitely continue to put in for this tag, it was a great time.  Mark

Thanks everyone, it was fun keeping this log also. Can someone tell me what the berries are that grow on bushes that look like raspberries? Are they raspberries? If so I didn't know they grew around here. There sure are a lot of them.

Thanks for your help H2O, I hope we can hunt together in the fall. I know where a couple of them live, if they stay in that area. There are a lot of berries in the area so I can't imagine them having to leave for food.

Yup, that makes a guy feel good. This is my longest thread ever. To pay everyone back, in the fall all I'm going to do is post a pic of my bear, no story at all! :chuckle:

DIYARCHERYJUNKIE- I have hunted up around Stevens Pass quite a bit, but this year I'm going to hit some of the spot's I found during the spring hunt. At least early in the season, then I may head up high depending on what happens. You are welcome to hunt with me wherever I go though. We'll keep in touch.

Hi Ripper,

I'll bet you have not regrets at not getting your bear.  The chance to spend time outdoors.  All the stuff you got to see.  Everything you learned.  One of my funnest trips this year was with my son and we didn't even get the turkey we were after.  Sometimes the kill is just the icing.

You are right on the money gobble Doc. I have no regrets at all. It was a lot of fun to keep this log as well. Hopefully someone else was able to learn a thing or two. I've only killed 1 bear before so I am certainly not an expert. I was hoping to share not only the hunt but the learning experience as well. This log is true reality, not everyone get's a kill at the end of the story. In fact more don't than do by a long shot.
