Title: Rufous' 2012 Dayton spring bear hunt
Post by: Rufous on April 15, 2012, 06:50:12 AM: It has not started well. Saturday at about 2am I woke with bad stomach pain. Ended up getting my appendix removed yesterday at about 4pm. Spent last night in hospital. Hope to go home this morning later. Not sure how long recovery will be before I can get out after the bears. Good hunting to the rest of you.

Post by: Rufous on April 20, 2012, 05:10:42 PM: Less soreness each day. I hope to get out tomorrow with my buddy who also has the Dayton permit. I still need to take it pretty easy though. I am at Les Schwab right now with a flat tire. I had to change the tire but got help from a guy to toss it in the back of the truck for me.

Post by: Rufous on April 23, 2012, 01:07:28 PM: Went out Saturday and did a bunch of glassing as well as a 6 mile hike. No bears spotted however. I sure thought we would see some as the weather was perfect. Hope to get out again on Friday.

Post by: Rufous on April 30, 2012, 10:14:42 AM: Saw my first bear of the year yesterday at 7pm. It was about 3/4 mile away across a big canyon and looked to be on the small side so I did not persue it. Still it was good to finally see one.

Post by: Rufous on May 06, 2012, 11:14:56 AM: I was out yesterday with my brother who also has the Dayton spring bear tag. We logged about 6.5 miles on the boots and I only saw a sow with 3 large cubs. Hoping next weekend is better.

When my appendix went it burst and almost killed me I went through 3 surgeries and spent a little over 3 weeks in the hospital a 5 years old. I know this is not common butevery time i hear of someone going through apendacites i remember my experiance and I hope the best for them!

Post by: Rufous on May 14, 2012, 12:37:21 PM: I traced out on Google Earth the routes we took both days. We covered 5.5 miles in rugged country on Friday and 6.5 miles on Saturday. No wonder my feet were sore! I saw a nice sized blonde bear on Friday and again on Saturday in the same general area (only 1/2 mile apart so I am confident it is the same one). I hope to get it next weekend. I have taken 10 bears so far but never a blonde one.

Post by: Rufous on May 20, 2012, 11:40:34 AM: I got in a big hunt on Thursday but only saw a sow with 2 cubs. Friday my brother joined me and we hunted a different area but again I only saw a sow with 2 cubs.

My brother got a very small blonde boar yesterday. It was probably only 2 years old. I spotted it but knew it was quite small and decided I did not want it but my brother just cannot seem to pass up any bear so he shot it. It is indeed a beautiful bear. A buddy that was hunting with us told my brother if he could get another one like it he could have some house slippers made. :yike: I thought if I could get one of the paws I could attach it to my key chain as my lucky rabbit's foot. :chuckle:

We only saw one other bear yesterday but it was too far away.

The weather is not looking good for next weekend so I may end up bearless this spring. Saw quite a few bears, mostly sows with cubs. The only bear I could have remotely had a chance at was the blonde one at 575 yards but it gave us the slip as I was trying to get closer. Maybe the weather forecast will improve and I will be able to connect next weekend. I have to work this week. Good luck to the rest of you.
