Title: Gobble calls?
Post by: rosscrazyelk on April 17, 2012, 03:17:16 PM
So I got suckered into buying the Knight and Hale hale fire gobble call. It was not that hard really. The reason I bought it is because I have been able to call in turkeys for other people but never myself, and no my friends seem to not be able to return the favor. Because of my dilema I figured I would give this gobble call a try beause it says brings in hard to come toms.. Oh yeah and it is supposed to be easy to use. Any idiot can use it. Well I must be a idiot because all I can do is sound like a crow on this thing.

Anyone use this call or ones like it? Is the gobble call effective?

It can be, I have used a box call to make a gobble call.  However you REALLY have to be careful, very dangerous call to use.  The couple of times it has worked for me is a hung up gobbler, who likes to talk, but won't come any farther.  I have thrown in a gobble and had them come running over to kick some butt.  But I have also had a couple move away, escpecially if they have hens with them already.

had a very vocal tom locked up in a little draw across the no tresspassing signs one year. no more than 100 yds. worked that bird with 2 diff calls & my buddy chimed in also. after a couple hrs we moved around the corner of the property & hit him again. same thing, sounded like someone had a tape recorder down there.
well i decided enough of this, its the last day-last hr & i hit the gobble, beat my hat around the ground & gobbled again.
bairley got settled & here he came, hadent even put my hat back on yet.
i dont think its the best answer all the time & its the only time ive done it but hay, I think this old boy had all the chicks in the neighborhood but couldent stand the thought of sharing.

Great late season call! When the hens are on the nest all day long. Make a few hen clucks then move off 60 yards and hit the gobble. Go back to where you made the hen call and stay quiet. The big guys dont want someone moving in on the only hen around. I've gotten over 15 toms this way. I use the HS strut. Early in the season I stick to an older model. Hs strut, it makes a jake call. And some times works in the early season, makes a broken up gobble.

Forgot to add. keep your back to a good tree. There are a few idiots, that dont know the difference between a hunter and a turkey. And will shoot at the sound of a gobble. Not a public land call!
