Title: Monroe tag
Post by: CP on April 19, 2012, 11:28:33 AM
Well I’m getting a late start; just picked up my key and maps from the nice women at the Sedro Woolley DNR office.  Time to dust off the .35 Whelen and start planning on where to start looking.

Looks like some decent weather for the next few days so I hope to get out there soon.

What areas are on the map as far as the Monroe tag goes? I live in the area but have not seen the hunting areas.

Hopefully this nice weather will get them moving. It has been a slow start, so you didn't miss much. Good luck and keep us posted.

Can you actually drive all the way from Granite to the dam on Spada? Used to cross it when I was a kid...neat country back there. Shouldn't have too much of a hard time finding a bear back there

I'm hunting today, have put quite a few miles on the old danners. Haven't seen any new peels or scat, I found an area that had some canary grass and skunk cabbage just off a nicely "greening" skid road. I looked it over pretty thoroughly and didn't see anything that made me even think "maybe". Headed back to the truck now, gonna go hit a different area.

Dang, was hoping the spring bear key and access might get a person in from the north side. From the map, it looks like it could be done unless those stars are gates that don't open with the key?
Title: Re: Monroe tag

A lot of those gates can't be opened with our key. It's very frustrating indeed. In fact more can't be opened than can. :bash:

That still really surprises me that so few of those gates can be unlocked with the key they provide! Too bad they couldn't mark those on the map so that you could plan on how to get around and OUT of an area!

Post by: washelkhntr on April 19, 2012, 03:47:17 PM

I talked to Chris Hankey about the same thing today. He said that the gates around the watershed (the ones with the no motorized access) will not be able to be opened with our key. All the others ones should be able to be opened with our key. He said that if they didnt to call him with the location and to look at the lock and see if it is a F3 lock. If it was a F1 lock he would have to have the forrester go up and put the correct lock on it.

Clear as mudd right?

Post by: FC on April 19, 2012, 04:04:08 PM
We did find a few locks that the key fit into but wouldn't unlock too, I wondered if they had a chitty locksmith as well as being inept. :)

Did you guys ever find anything washelkhntr?
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: washelkhntr on April 19, 2012, 05:54:20 PM
No. Found some promising looking areas but nothing to write home about. After we saw you and Ripper, we drove around and scouted a bit. Never did make it up north. I will be back out saturday, going to head up towards Verlot.

So are the gates with a star by them the ones that you can actually open with your keys?
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: Ripper on April 19, 2012, 07:09:25 PM
It's hard to tell what they open. So far my key opens more gates that say no motorized access than anything else.
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: Button Nubbs on April 19, 2012, 09:06:13 PM
I am curious. Are we exempt from the "no motorized access"?
Title: Re: Monroe tag

I asked the DNR that today and the answer was not only no, but hell no.

No, those are all of the gates.

I asked the DNR that today and the answer was not only no, but hell no.

WTF are the keys for then?
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: washelkhntr on April 19, 2012, 09:21:29 PM
Again, exactally what i asked. Evidently the no motorized access has to do with the city of everett watershed. Any road that goes through the watershed, regardless of how long or where it ends is closed. Said they are worried about oil or gas coming off a vehicle and contamanating the wather supply.

Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: FC on April 19, 2012, 09:26:23 PM
That is retarded, you can drive right up next to Spada lake! Why in the hell would they give you a key then? Are they just trying to test your self-restraint or was the guy you talked to maybe just talking out his ass?
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: Button Nubbs on April 19, 2012, 09:51:02 PM
:yeah: then why the hell would they be marked as "gates" on the map?
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: Ripper on April 19, 2012, 09:54:51 PM
If that's the case then my key doesn't work anywhere. Why am I letting them hold a $100 deposit for a key that works no where?

That doesn't make much sense, I think the person washelkhntr talked to didn't know what they were talking about, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense to give you the key.
Title: Re: Monroe tag
Post by: washelkhntr on April 19, 2012, 09:59:24 PM
Trust me, i feel your pain. I stressed my displeasure with giving them money for a key that is usless.  chris Hankey the dnr  manager out of sedro wooley was the one i spoke with about it.

Geetings Everyone

First time posting, long time hunting.  I have Monroe Bear permit also and have been out and about Pre and during the season.  I put 100+ miles on my truck today with out finding much promising sign.  Maybe I'm just used to seeing allot more sign & bears in the spring.

To the guy heading up to Verlot,  I was up there today.  The key works in the first 2 gates.  The 3rd gate is federal so its closed (walk in).  First gate was 2 miles of drivable road with a few spurs heading off.  Lots of skunk cabbage and sping grass but didn't see any scat, scrapes prints or any sign of bear.  second gates is drivable for 1/2 mile then the rest by foot.

Good luck to everyone and look forward to hearing about your success.

Bears will be a lot more active starting about mid-May.

I bet you'll start seeing a lot of sign then, in the same places where you're seeing nothing now.

As long as you have your key and paperwork you will be fine behind all those gates you can open.  Every gate is posted no vehicles.

Welcome G5 and thanks for the info. I agree D-Rock, with the paper work and key, I will take my chances. As has been stated,,  every gate is marked no motorized. I had  Dr appt this morning but I'm heading out now and hunting till dark. Looks like the sun wants to make a showing. I think it's going to be a good day.

When I had mt permit in 2010 I was stopped several times by dnr and asked for my paperwork.  Once I showed them or told them I was bear hunting never had any problems.
Ripper if you need any help packing one out tonight I don't have any plans.  You got my # right?

2 tanks of gas in 2 days without seeing an animal???  This I find a little puzzling.  I did start running into fresh sign hiking along grassy spurs in the designated problem areas.  The poop was 50/50 mix of animal and vegetations.  small clumps but frequent and fresh.  I'm used to seeing cabbage and grass dung in good amounts littering the trails.  I also noticed that a few of last years tree damage was being revisted by bears also.  Nothing new.  Didn't hear any activity either.  might be out tomorrow but I doubt it.  I really don't want to draw down on the first one I find,  I need selection so I'm going to wait at least a week maybe 2 before.  I got this tag for a good winter coat on a decent size Blackie for a rug I hope the fur is still good come 1st of May.  I really think its just to early.  I buy a hancock permit every year and come spring time its impossible to drive back there around the 1st of may and not see a bears walking the roads.  From what I've seen from tree damage there's just as much or even more bears in this area.  Time will tell.  I do have a ? maybe someone can answer. The Campbell tree farm owns a majority of the land S of monroe to index that butts up to Hancock.  In the proposed hunting area it looks like Cambell (sp) only owns a couple townships.  Can I hunt Spring bear on the S. Side of Monroe and Index?  Its on the map that was given to me.  I know it has proposed hunting areas but when I called the Campbell group the gentleman mentioned that most of there land was on the S. side of Highway 2 and it also says I can hunt this tree farm.  I don't think this is the same gmu also.  I know its a slim chance but if theres a slight possiblity it would definatly be worth checking out.

3 days and many miles and I’ve seen nothing, no bears, no tracks, no fresh peels, and no scat.   :dunno: It’s getting frustrating.  I think I’ll wait a week or so before starting out again.

I'm not seeing anything either, but keep a good attitude and things will happen. Like everyone is saying, another week or two and there should be a lot more sign around.

Last year we started seeing the majority of the bear sign the last week of the hunt. They need to keep it open into June if they want their harvest numbers up on this hunt. My buddy and I only saw a fleeting glimpse of a bear on the Monroe hunt last year. Ate our tags and not for lack of trying.
My opinion and it won't change.....

I have never understood the majority of this boards mentality pertaining to this hunt.  This isn't a slam dunk hunt by any means.  It's a tough one! Yes, some of the special permit hunts are slam dunks, but not this one.  Don't become frustrated with the lack of seeing animals.  Be happy to have the opportunity to be out in the woods with a "chance" in your pocket.  The fall hunt offers a better chance at getting a bear in my opinion.  My dad drew this tag two years ago and we hunted our tails off. We were out every day of the season except 3 and we didn't see a thing.  We had a blast out there though.

Good luck and safe hunting!

Never in my first thought did I think this hunt was going to be a slam dunk. I used to spring bear hunt with a buddy for the timber company with dogs back in the day. I know how tuff spring bear can be.
The experience that we had last spring was just what we saw. Most all the sign was starting to show up the last week of the season. Now last spring was a bit crazy compared to what we are dealing with now, but I will still conclude that if the WDFW wants spring bears killed in the Monroe unit, they will keep it open till June. Great to have a chance to be in the woods, but with gas $4.25 a gallon I would concentrate all my effort into the last week of the season if I had the tag. Spurr road with peels and a treestand would be my choice. Good luck guys and knock em down!

Always fun to see one no matter what the size. Also nice to have a camera when you do see one. Sometimes they are hard to judge the size of, nice discretion on your part.

Went out today and didn't see any of the 3 P's (prints, poop, peels). Tried my key in 5 different gates and it only worked in one. Luckily I can get to where I'm trying to go from this gate. Ill be out monday.

Did ten miles on my feet today. Had second bear at 100 yards thought about it to long. He looked like he might be first bear I seen the other day. But nope. He got my wind and ran across road. Be was all of 180. In the tall grass could not judge his size.
On third day of the season I seen a big boy on the way up the main line. He was at least 350. So I have him in my head.
I have decided next respectable bear gets it. And I can hunt for bigger with the bow in the regular season.
I have only seen one pile of scat, but they are moving. Everyone i have seen have been between three and five PM.

Sorry d-rock, did not make it out early today. Did not check here before I left. It was a non eventful day. New pile of scat. And more walking than I had planned. I was hoping the road I was on went around the hill. Dead end. I even tried going up through the woods to another road. And ended up going back and all the way around. But got to hunt the whole time. :IBCOOL: so it was all good.

hunted 12-dark today walking every road and glassing every cut i came to. ended up finding my first pile of scat and found tracks going from the road up into a cut about 30 yards past the scat. i found 2 spots on the edge of the gravel road that were dug up. is this from a bear? i have pics but cant find my cord to hook the camera to my cpu. i tried to rack my brain for what in the hell else would do it but couldnt come up with any explination. they were both a long ways past the locked gates. i also found an area where there were an insane ammount of old peels. didnt see any fur but i had a good time with my bro. successful day.

I got a brief glimpse of a jet black boar this morning.  He wasn’t very big, lean and lanky but his coat was beautiful,    looked like it was two sizes too big for him.  He was on the move though and I couldn’t get a shot in the thick cover.

Hot going today.  Must have put in 15 miles of walking trails and roads.  Found more people than anything else but I did find a spot that had about every 4th tree peeled.  They didn't look all that fresh though.  One was obviously at least a year old but I'm 6' 5" tall and I couldn't reach the top of the peel.  I'd like to see the bear that did that one.

Returned to the area of high tree damage yesterday evening and just sat and watched and listened.  Occasionally I could hear scratching and tearing noises along with rustling and crunching of the vegetation.  The cover is too thick to get through without making a lot of noise and giving myself away so I just sat and listened until shooting hours were over.

I’m close, but I’m not sure what I’m close to.

i have kind of been following the bear hunting in the monroe unit and would recommend looking up the kellog lake rd right out of startup. there is several gates on the right side that have potential for bears. i have seen several bears at the first gate about 2.5-3 miles up the gravel rd.

Good sign yesterday but never connected.  Feeling really good about this week. I'm seeing decent sign, not tons but enough to still feel confident.  I've enjoyed the hunt but this is no easy tag.  from whom I've seen and talked with, feelings are the same.  For the first time ever I'm the slacker in hunting season and all I'n all I've put in well over 50 hours into this? I'm sure glad someone got one yesterday.  Kellog rd had allot of traffic on it yesterday but I'll be hunting hard during weekdays this week so I'll def give it a try

Hi everyone.  Keep at it.  I hooked up with a sow yesterday with this tag.  My first bear!  62" from nose to tail. Lanky, Not a monster, but a beautiful coat long and thick.  I also saw a bobcat, six deer and a grouse!!   Was a good day. The sun came out after the thunder and lightning storm.   Shot her while hiking down a grassy road.   Multiple piles of scat on the road none looked fresh though.  Saw what I thought was blackie feeding around the a bend in the road as i was coming around the corner.   Took a few more bends in the road to catch up before I rounded a bend and 20 ft in front of me feeding with head down and facing away I raised up and shot her.   Keep your heads up they are out there!!!  Got some really helpful advice from the good people on this site.  So to you I'd like to say thanks!!!!

Way to go Logsplitter!

I can’t tell you how many miles of grassy roads I’ve walked looking for that elusive bear.  Hope to get out a few more times before it’s over.

Well, I’m not going to make it out for this evening’s hunt so I’m officially skunked for this hunt.  I've lost track of how many times I’ve been out and I’ve seen a grand total of 2 bears, no shots fired.  It’s been fun but it’s been frustrating as well.

Good luck to those of you still hunting and congratulations to those of you that got your bear on this hunt.

I'm in the same boat as you CP. It was a good hunt, I learned a lot.
