I'm jealous!!!   I was out today but had no luck locating a bruin.  Found a lot of scat.  There are a lot of huckleberry's  out in our neck of the woods.  Hopefully in a couple of weeks when the blackberry's ripen I'll see one.  I did see 6 elk (2 bulls) and ran into another bear hunter.  Sore feet after my 8 mile hike.

Killbilly popped a cap

I called one in on Fri. night with my Fox Pro Scorpion, while trying to locate it in the Cascara it stood up and busted me. It probably made the next county in nothing flat. I let BTKR take my stump the next morning, he is better caller but the bruin never came back.

The next morning while mvoing into a clear cut, a bear ripping a stump or log winded me and tore up the landscape leaving out of there. Never saw how big he was.

Sat. eve, I saw a good sized specimen, took the shot, looked and sounded like he was hit. He ran straight up a road so I couldn't shoot again. Found 2 places where he dug up the road peeling out. No blood and no sign of where he left the road. Evidently, it was a clean miss.

Saw a yote this morning but no bear. Came home but Rick stayed, he was having a good time.

All total, I saw 4 bear & 1 Yote so I don't feel it was a loss.

It was great to be in the field again and enjoy the sport and chase. I'll be back out in a couple of weeks.

Well I made it home and thought I would post a few pics. It seems that no bears were killed up there this weekend which is almost par for the course in this unit. Everyone in our camp saw bears so it wasn't a complete bust. I heard a few shots and I know of at least one yote that got lead poisoning. Bearmanric was able to get a pic of this cub.

If we had had a tortilla large enough it might have been in trouble. lol

The salmon berries were hit pretty hard in some places and they seem to be past prime now. Not much for the little blackberries and the Himalayan type are still very green. The red & blue huckleberries are coming on strong and in some places they are starting to dry out.

blue huck

The cascara berries were very disapointing. They are usually ripe by the first of September but I think they will be a few weeks later this year. There also seems to be alot less berries and many buds didn't seem to develope. Pretty sad crop for sure.

I have a few more pics to post later.

Are those the bushes that kinda look like a willow but they have berries on em?  I've never know what those were called?  Those berries aren't edible are they?

It's strange... the berry crop on the east side is awesome.  Hucks are unbelievable this year.

Most people confuse cascara with alder. You can eat the berries if you want, but you will need lots of to. Their is a reason that it is called Chitum.

So I know some felt betrayed by my other CF post.. :dunno:  :chuckle: But here is what Killbilly and I came across tonight.

The Cascara is getting ripe quick.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FcIMG_4198.jpg&hash=718bb73cacf9a40de294d1de70435950e6bb1192)

Here is a shot of two of the three seeds.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FcIMG_4204.jpg&hash=48be0f98736375e6dc28733ecc10f5536ac7fd5b)

Salal berries are also getting ripe.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FcIMG_4208.jpg&hash=8ef586c4ddc6ab969dc9bccaf85e537340aef360)

A shot of Salal seeds.

This little fella walked within 5 yards of us.

I spent three evenings hunting a few places up at work. Haven't wanted to venture too far until the berries are ripe. A few are now but it shouldn't be "good" for another 2 weeks. 4 bears so far but only one worth taking a second look at. I'm going to try for 2 over 300 this year ~ but there's a few bigger ones running around that I see every now and then. All I've got to do is connect. With the new rifle I'm hoping that shouldn't be a problem. Anyways, a few shots of one place:

Looking to the east

Went out for a bit this morning and made two stands. Mostly scouting. We found an area where the Cascara is full on, but no bear sign.  :dunno: I think we saw about 10 deer and took a few pics as well.

Still spotted. This fella was bedded down with mamma about 30 yards away.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FyIMG_4223.jpg&hash=5d331cfb0494ba9f8a8c341db58616d36f069d08)

Young yote. 100 yard standing off-hand shot hit it a bit forward and it bounced about until I could put a second in it. Used a hand call this time.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FyIMG_4233.jpg&hash=e0989d043b62a31d1388dd0d149fecf7a2cd247e)

A hatfull of fungus among us. Finally found my first batch of Chanterelles this year. Normally we find some in July but not this year. Next week should be better.

Signs of the times? Not sure how I feel about this since there are no houses around.

saw a few got close a few times also.........no more details than that....

recommendations.......

after not shooting a rifle for a season and getting a new scope......check the mounts that the smith puts on and double check that there tight, because if they are not tightened all the way they will come loose and you will miss :bash:......miss :bash:.....and miss again :bash:.......

BTKR, the shrooms were great with the steak. Even better than your 100 yd offhand shot at the Yote after running 50 yds.  I'll wager none of knew he could run.....  one dead yote though.

How did we get scopes mounts on a Notes from the field thread?  :dunno:

No, the fat on the thing ( what little there was) I think had a little of the Pine taste just cooked it over coals. I thought I would just "Mountain Man" it and cook with out any spices just heat and eat... :bdid: Once I added it to bacon grease it tasted like pork. Ha ha :dunno:

This one got lucky. We didn't want to fire a shot in this area.

Haven't been out much, but we went out for mushrooms, yotes & bears probably in that order. Took a couple pics of the sunrise, tried to poke some holes in some yotes but I couldn't connect and then we picked a few pounds of Chanterelles. Not bad for a quick morning jaunt.

The 3 day weekend was a mixture of rain and sun on the coast. Saw a few deer, a couple grouse (before season) and had the coyotes howling everynight. I saw 3 bears and Killbilly saw those plus 3 others, one he called in with no weapon around.  :yike: All bears were alone and none were cubs. I missed a small one on Saturday. Called one in that hung up and I never even knew it, but Killbilly saw it. Then in came a whopper bobcat, again just before season. :yike:

Here are a few pics.

The darn brushpickers drying out their rain gear. Can you believe the color? Someone could get killed dressed like that in a bear area.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FbrushpickersIMG_4298.jpg&hash=c371e11c874fc67b50bf28fd197d209904ecbe39)

It must be tough being a bear in some areas. They are still peeling trees. Normally this is only done in the spring, but we found a bunch that were done in the last week. Summer peels.

Mushrooms were popping up all over. We both got a bag full.

Went out for a little local bear scouting this morning...well actually I went after mushrooms but took my rifle just in case. :chuckle:
Did not see any critters (one grouse but not grouse friendly weapon) but did have some of the best chanterelle picking I have had in a long time. Definitely enough to share. Some were getting dry but I bet after this coming weekends rain the mushrooms will be all over.
I did see alot of Chicken of the Woods this weekend in the Winston unit as well as some Oysters that were a few days past prime.

I saw a couple deer and a few elk and some bear damage in the Winston unit as well as a friendly porcupine.

No, no thorns. It is very similar to an Alder in looks. Matter of fact most people confuse the two even at close distances.

Perhaps what we have down here is some type of Hawthorne? I do not know but I do know that the bears eat the heck out of them. My first real bear hunt was in 1996 on some private property here in the Blues with the son of the landowner. He took me up to a place on their property that they called "Bear Draw" because the bears congregated there to feed on the berries on these thorny trees. He shot a bear that ran out of the draw and its stomach was full of the berries. Brian.

So the early archery elk season has come and gone. I got about 3 full days in and never got closer than a few hundred yards from elk. My brother missed a 5 pt bull then later the same day he double lunged a cow just before dark. They got it prepped for the night and rode their bikes out. We went back in the next morning to get it out.

On our way out we saw a small bunch that had two bulls that were both "trying" to be 6 pts. We drove around to the other side so two of us could set up on these elk. As we were sidehilling the timber next to an overgrown cut we ran into a ton of fresh sign. We knew they were close. After *censored*footing around and getting into position I could hear a couple guys talking. Thinking they may push the elk to us we waited. And waited. The talking continued, but never moved. I backed out while my partner went on above and around. I walked up to the talking guys and saw that they had the bigger bull down. Apparently the guy was drawing on a cow and the bull started to rake a tree which drew the hunters attention. Needless to say we were too late.
Below is a pic of the smaller one.

Today we went out and made a predator stand at first light. Found a crow flyway and hope to bust some on the first. We called for an hour with only a deer to show for it. We did see a couple grouse and picked a ton of mushrooms. We both ended up with about a plastic grocery bag full.

How do you like the "Judge"?  Thought it would make a great hiking/grouse gun.

It is actually Killbilly's, but I like it ok. I think we needed a better .410 load, but it worked on the grouse.

I went out after work to do a little shooting. Shot a couple tight groups, spooked a couple deer and then went for a drive and this owl landed in front of the truck.

After a few pics a couple more owls flew in and this one took off like a scalded cat. Here is one of the two that flew in.

I set up the e-caller and they flew right over the top.
I took a ton of pics but due to lighting, lack of tripod, and a slight wind, I didn't get any that turned out worth a darn. But it was pretty cool to watch these two defend their territory.

They look like great pics to me.  What sound were you using to bring them in?

They were already in sight, but I used a vole squeak and a squirrel sound to pull them in close.

Can't wait until I get my deer and bear and then focus on coyotes and hunting with the wife's camera.  I would love to get shots like that.

It has been a long and busy week. With work and all the killing and butchering of my wifes deer and my bear I have not had much time to really chase the BT's. Maybe if it rains I will get a chance.

Killbilly and I went out for half a day today but only came home with some mushrooms. We found a few shaggy manes and some chanterelles. I brought them into the house and the shaggys started to go bad real fast, but I was able to use most of them in some hashbrowns that I made for dinner. The chanterelles will go good with fresh bear tenderloin later in the week.

Michelle and I spent most of last night canning bear meat. It is a long process, especially when you add the whole butchering and taking pictures. We did 32 pints and 18 half pints that I will share with her, Killbilly and my brother. Normally I am stingy with canned meat, but I still have a whole bear from September that I will thaw and can.
