Title: Question for you "Natives"
Post by: STIKNSTRINGBOW on April 19, 2012, 05:48:31 PM
 :yike:
Did not mean to scare you, not another "bashing" thread  :chuckle:
I am just curious, we all call Elk, Rocky mountan Elk, Roosevelt Elk, or Wapiti, or Cervous Elaphus Canadius, or Roosevelti, whatever..
I know that Wapti comes from (supposedly) Shawnee, or Cree (Waapiti) meaning "white Rump"  :dunno:
But what did the coastal "First People" call the Roosevelt ?
They (you) had to have your own word/name for the animal.

WRONG!  Elk were not planted.  Roosevelt are native to coastal Washington.  Market hunting and settlers almost wiped them out.  There were hold outs in the unlogged areas and some elk were brought in from the OP and released in Pacific county.  Reportedly some Rockys were released in the Puget trough.   Roosevelts are know to have been here for at least 3000 plus years.  The reason why they came back was strict laws that made elk hunting illegal for several years.  It is amazing how some rumors persist even though there is a preponderance of evidence to prove them false!

:yeah: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  Since you asked the Coastal guys I'm not going to answer but we have several different words for elk, then one for deer and it's a generalized word that can mean deer and/or elk in general.

Well while some of the other members were up chasing turkeys for the opener lots of Tribal Members were up in the mts. gathering roots and for me and my family it was the season opener for gathering roots.  Here's some pics of the kids out digging and some pics of the tops of the plants.

2 are commonly mashed into a paste or dried and eaten whole(my favorite).  1 is about the size of a nickel to a qauarter if it's a good winter and the other about a golf ball.  the 3rd resembles spaghetti but shorter, about 3 to 6 inches and it can be dried and served  or mixed with salmon in a soup     these show up low and then follow the melting of the snow up till end of may.  then another root isn't ready til end of summer and its similar to a carrot.  then theres wild onions and wild potatoes.

Is there a market for these different edible roots, be neat to try something different I've never had.  Also to the OP, good topic of interest.

Not outside the Tribal Communities.  The State had classified some of our traditional roots as noxious weeds in the past and was tryng to eliminate them from certain areas.  That occurred not to long ago and I believe they still consider some roots noxious weeds and from what I heard some programs and at least 1 or 2 of our Council Members are trying to get them removed from the list so they don't destroy fields of them.

Thanks Yak for sharing and I don't have any pics of the actually edible portions.  I've already got mine stored away til later this year.

You might be able to find a market for the camas roots, they taste a little like a very strong turnip and add a nice flavor to stews.  I don't think you would find much of a market for Bitterroots.  They are aptly named.
Cool pics Plat.

Roosies are native BTW.  Read Lewis and Clark's journals.  That's all they ate the winter they lived at Fort Clatsop.  They ate so much elk they actually got sick of it and began to go to lengths to find other foods...

Cool pics Plat.  If you tried some of my grandmothers methods of preparing them you'd think twice about which one was marketable.  I can't tell you how many non-tribal members have been hooked once they've tried the more popular way of preparing the bitterroot or in our language pyaxi (p-yuck-ee) it doesn't sound like "yuck" but relatively close.

so you boil the BRs twice (or 3 times), add salt and pepper and add canned salmon?  Does the fish mask the bitterness?

I grew up eating them too.  Bitterroots and foam berries were the only thing I never got used to.  Then again, I haven't really eaten them since I was 19, and I know your tastebuds change as you get older.  Could be I could stand them better now.  I have tried them cooked with salmon, deer meat, brown sugar, berries and several other ways (I don't know how many times they were boiled), but never learned to enjoy them.

it would be interesting to see all the roots & plants utilized by the indians of the north west & the recipies to go along with them. i remember my grand mother & some of the things she made (her & gramps were very into native culture ) but all that knowledge went with them.
maybe some of you could do an informational with pics & recipies ?
if for no other reason than for us lazy servivalists ?  :tung:

I happen to LOVE the verbal history of tribes and have been sorely disapointed when i tried to get a good book telling the stories of PNW coastal tribes... I have often found small bits and pices of stories cobbled together from several tribes all up and down the coast, but rarely a small geographic area.  I would imagine that many of those kinds of stories died with grandparents as well.  :'(

as well as the reason for the totums in the yard, all our boats names ect.. wished all that knowledge was passed.
as far as the plants go gram's most common saying was that will kill ya. gramps would show you what you could eat in the streams. too bad they had to leave before i was able to understand what they were teaching me. what a wealth of knowledge they werent able to pass along.
anyway, all you with that knowledge feel free. some of us are interested.

Native culture has always been passed down by oral tradition.  The stories, songs and legends stayed intact because the native cultures did not have a written language.  When you don't have writing, you have to exercise your memory on a daily basis.  Early white American biographers were always astounded at native people's ability to recall vividly with such detail hundreds and hundreds of stories.  As written language was introduced to those cultures, the memories began to fade.  That is why it is so hard to compile histories from the native perspective.  Many of the stories have been passed down, but the current generation (and I am speaking of the current generation of elders) are unable to recall them with the exactness that they were told.

very true indeed, I remember alot of stories my grandparents used to tell me when i was younger and I wish now that I could've recorded them actually telling them but it's to late for that now.  There are very few of the elders left in my family and the ones I have left i've been picking their brain to learn more of their past to be able to pass their stories down to the next generation.  Either way it's still alive and well as long as their is someone passing them down to the next.

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  I've done that!  When I was down there in AZ and NM they look at you like you're crazy for asking for butter or peanut butter. :o :o :o  It was all good and great til my cousin told me be careful, them Apache women can put spells on you and you'll never leave. :yike: :yike: :yike:  Glad I never got that far but, another cadet did and he transfered from CO to AZ right after graduation. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

The parade starts at 10am I believe and if you go be there at least by 9 with a lawn chair and umbrella because some years it gets hot real fast and all the good spots get taken real fast.  If you go try and sit near the clinic and you'll get all the good stuff that gets handed out.

If you stay they provide lunch, usually salmon and other side dishes.

Yes, it is free.  I made the mistake of helping the Cultural Center a couple of years ago and I didn't get anything to eat after I was done serving. :bash:  Never did or do that again. :bdid:

For those of you that are interested in books about the N.W tribes, go the The Maryhill Museum Of Art and go to the gift shop.  They have a huge selection of books for sale, plus a great display of native artifacts.
If you happen to be in The Dalles, go to Klints book store.  They also have a large number of books. There is a book called Drummers and Dreamers.  It is about the Seven Bells Religion.  It takes you into a whole different world.  I know there is a specific name for the religion, but I can't think of it right now.  It is still practiced today.

Had to bring this back to the forefront, I was going to post this in the BF thread but that's a serious discussion and I didn't want to get off track so here's a video for the Hot Native Women.

Yep they're some short natives.  I had one of them White Mt. Apache women back in the day and my bro was living down there was telling me they can put medicine on a man and make him fall in love and crazy stuff so needless to say we ended our relationship but not for that reason.  She was short and hot.  Under different circumstances at the time I might've moved down there but just couldn't do it then.
