Title: Foiled again updated
Post by: rosscrazyelk on April 20, 2012, 09:21:46 AM: I snuck away yesterday to try and get me a bird. Right away on the morning I had a nice tom fly towards my setup, along with three of his female friends. I had the hens at 10 and 25 yards. The tom would come no closer to what I guess was ,60 yards. He eventually left while one of ladies almost stepped on my foot. Later in the day I hid under a tree not to far from a roosting tree I found also to get out of the rain . An hour later here they come. And just as my luck would have it only the hens roosted in that tree while the wiley tom dissappeared and eventually roosted 100 yards away. He was not interested in anything I had to say . :bash:

Post by: yelp on April 20, 2012, 09:27:42 AM: ROSS..Locate him about 11 o'clock..and hunt him till three. Soft yelps at first then more aggressive. Sometimes pissing of the boss hen will work. Henned up Toms can be fooled but it isn't easy.. The hens he is with will go and tend their nests late morning making him available. Also in a week or two them hens will be sitting on nests incubating and he will be looking for love..keep at it. :tup:

Post by: AKBowman on April 20, 2012, 09:31:37 PM: Yelp- How would you recommend "locating" him mid day? Hunting the past couple days and once the brids hit the ground their quiet pretty much all day. Do you use hen calls, or locator calls like owl hoots and crow calls?

Once you find him, take your time to close the distance by keeping tabs on him, by him responding to the locator call, then set up when you think you are close enough. Wait 15 minutes or so and soft call to him. If he responds but only comes so far, repeat above without using the locator call. Do it very slowly as 20-25 yards may be all you need. You have to get inside his circle of comfort. Once inside that zone, he's a dead bird if you don't mess up.

Post by: birdaddict on April 21, 2012, 10:12:31 PM: AK- If you're hunting by water (River or large lake) a goose call works very well as a locator. Other wise your standard owl or crow. I think a loud hen call could spook the Tom away because it is rare to here them mid day. That's just what I have found in my own experience but I'm no pro.

I like using one of those woodpecker/peacock calls, you can also kind of do a crow and coyote with it as well.

Looks like your putting the pieces together and your niece is reaping the rewards. Congratulations to you both. In my opinion that tom is worth 500 gobblers that are shot out of trees or trucks.

I told my neice friday night we had to get up at 4 am to be where I wanted us to be before light. She was not happy about it but said okay. 4am came and she was not gonna get up so i waited til 5, I figured no pressureI do not want her to dislike hunting. She got up at 5 hit the road at 545.. We pulled in to my spot at 6:05, I open the door and I hear a gobble no more than 100 yards away. I tell my neice to grab her gun and facemask lets go.. We went off the road around 50 yards sit down in some cover and I let out a very soft hen call to my right since they were on my left.. Before I could finish I hear 3 gobbles. I sat for a minute or so let out another call to my right and they are close. I told her i bet we can get a double.. Couple more minutes.... No birds . I let out another call and they are to my right.. Oh crap.. I let a purr to my left.. No gobble. After we reset ourselves. i see movement but cant tell what it is. I was hoping all the birds would be in the open at one time but they came out one by one.. First one a hen. Second I think it was a jake but could not see a beard.. the third one I saw a beard so I waited to see what the bird behind it was. He would not move. I think he was in strutt. Anyway The jake with the 2 inch beard was to temping to let go so i told her to shoot it.. Bang. 25 yard shot done deal. I tried to get up to see if I could get a shot at the big tom but he was gone like the wind... Anyway it was over in 10 minutes 6:15 it was done..Put the tag on took pictures , Put the turkey in the truck to try and find me a Tom.. No luck for me the rest of the day but I could not of asked for a better day. And cant believe how sometimes you can hunt hard and see or hear nothing. And sometimes it is fast and furious..

Remember what you did..and how they reacted...you learn from your experiences. some seasons I walked miles hunted lots of areas and come to a spot call they run in I shoot and its over. It sometimes is surreal. What your niece thinks is that turkey hunting is easy..LOL.. YEah you just get up early, sit in a bush and call and they come to ya and shoot one... :chuckle: Good Job to you and her..Congrats..you are a turkey hunter! :)
