Title: Killer wad

I was just remembering this incident which was probably 10 years ago.

Had a bunch of mallards come in- it was kind of a flooded timber situation. I swung on one of the farther birds and dropped it. Partner knocked down at least one. Dog was going after one or more birds so I went to pick mine up. About 20 yards out I picked up a different stone dead drake that I hadn't even seen fall. Examination revealed a full shot wad had penetrated it side right under the wing- looked like it went in about an inch and a half.

I felt pretty lucky at the time. Over 30 years I've never seen a"wad kill" before or since.
Never heard any talk of this- but -it has to happen once in a while doesn't it?

I don't know if I have heard of that but can believe if because the arm pit of any bird is very vulnerable.  When I see a pellet had rip through the arm pit of a bird, I call it the golden BB.  Sounds like the golden wad for you.

This happened a couple years ago. My brother shot a spoony and it came back with the wad wedged into the bird. the wad was flipped around too with 2 pellets still in it. it seemed like an old shell that the pellets were stuck to the wad

It was right there in the soft spot.
Now my mission for next season, to make things more challenging, is to load up a bunch of pelletless wads and see what I can bring down.
With some luck I'd expect to get another bird in the next 40 years or so :tung:

I had black cloud wads stuck in birds.  Make sure they are out further than 10 yards.  :tup:
