How do you guys get your fans to stay open w/o any hands?
-
Here is my opening day bird. I have been looking for my 2nd but just been seeing jakes. I passed a group of jakes and a nice bearded hen a couple nite ago :bash: I never pass the jakes but decided to be nice that day and hold a little bit more for another tom.
-
How do you guys get your fans to stay open w/o any hands?
Its a little tricky. I just found a forked stick, and stuck one end in the ground, and the forked end holding the fan open.
-
Wife first ever Kill!!!
Not sure on exact Beard length or spurs took it to taxi last night for a full mount. Beard is around 9+ inches and had around 3/4 inch spurs.

I've gotta say... you guys that kill 'em with bows are studs.
I shot straight through two birds a few years ago with my bow and both of them flew off and I never found them. Went back to shotgunning after the 2nd one. Maybe I just have bad luck... :dunno:
-
Opening day gobbler. After missing a big tom first thing in the morning, I moved back to some state land later in the day and shot this gobbler on a steep ridge at 4:00 pm. It definitely felt good to redeem myself.

My brother's second bird of the year. I didn't take a picture of the limb I blasted yesterday, though I should have. Through the scope, all was clear. But there was a limb like 4ft in front of my barrel that I centerpunched. It took out my entire pattern. Damn. Downfall #1 of the red dot scope.
-
Nice tom ... the good news is you still have time to centerpunch more limbs ...
:yike:
Oops, I mean sweet talk an even bigger tom within range.
Good luck FH.

Well I haven't made one flop yet but did manage to call this nice Tom in for my dad to about 25 yards. His Mossberg did the rest.

Camp David 2012 turkey report. Denny showed up the first Thursday after the opener and Dan showed up with his 12 year old son on Friday. Same days the birds stopped gobbling. :bash:. Lots of hiking on Friday afternoon produced nothing. Saturday evening a flock of hens and a jake wondered by Dan's blind and his 12 year old son bagged his first bird with his 20 Ga.. Denny and I hiked about a mile and sat in a favorite turkey "zone" for about 1/2 an hour and we finally heard a gobble. He continued to gobble when I answered and we got ready in the pop-up blind. 10 minuted later the tom showed up and Denny had his first tom. I patterened my bird for 4 days. They were roosting above the cabin. Had a few close calls, but when he came to the top of the hill chasing some jakes at about 25 yds, I sent a load of #5s his way and the game was over.
-
Nice looking birds and cabin. No wonder you had a hard time finding birds with those heavy green sunglasses. :chuckle:
-
nice job Camp ..... damn nice cabin ....and birds :chuckle:
-
Keep at it everbody!!!!! Don't think I'll be able to make it out this year.....

April 30th bird. My first longbeard. 9" beard and just over 1 inch spurs. I really owe the bird to my son Bow Boy. Just as he went back to get my backpack that I left under a tree at the last spot this gobbler came out of the woods. Rather than spook the bird Bow Boy held back and let me eventually take this one. Now I need to help get him his first with his bow.
-
My brother back in Pa... Pa Eastern ..

Heres mine. 8 1/2 inch beard and 1/2 spurs.

Taken April 16, 2012 in Colville area

Nice bird!
-
Love all the pictures, when are we going to get the first actual 1 1/2" spur pics? Never got one myself, I know how hard it is to kill a bird that big. 31+ birds and none that big. 1 1/4" is the biggest for me.

PathfinderJR's bird had some pretty good hooks on him, but still only 1 1/8", he was an old bird too.

First Tom (Merriam's) from last weekend May 5th from the NE. Lone Tom came in silent and then started gobbling when he saw our two hen decoys. Buddy drew his bow, the arrow fell off the release and he told me to take the shot (with my Mossberg) as the Gobbler got nervous and started to walk off! As the guys know well that hunt with me ...... don't have to ask me twice! :chuckle:
-
Got my first turkey 8 1/4 inch beard called in 2 before I got him first one I tried to get with a bow but he saw my draw 2 one I missed (but they were both jakes so...)

Just about all of our special occasion family dinners have turkey as one of the main dishes along with deer or elk, ham and we as a family keep all of our food we gather throughout the year in-house, none of it goes outside unless it's my grandmother, who usually provides for ceremonies everything I've given to her. Also, I'm pretty sure he was on the rez and if he wasn't on the rez our game laws don't prohibit us from using that caliber on turkey.
Almost forgot, Hair, that's a nice juicy looking turkey...     My guess is south boundary area?
-
Yup
Right on plat
-
Nice bird Hairtrigger

Thanks guys, my cousin is all burned out he got into hunting turkeys this year an missed one like this he said, he tryn to talk me into it now, just happened to be riding with my neff when he tried a set up an ot worked out great lol
-
Oh yeah also was my first bird ever  :yike:
Almost shot a hen when they came out, but didn't see the beard so I waited a few more seconds an wham BTD!!!
-
Just my :twocents: but there is no sport using a long rifle on turkeys.
-
Whats the sport in using a scatter gun :dunno:
Lol its all good shot placement, an accuracy, an comfortable in taking an making a good shot, go ahead an hate, I'm glad my first bird is a nice one.
-
I never said hate and you should have never gone there. :bdid: I said sport. Is that the best way to stop a conversation on this thread that you feel is a jab at you? I gave my opinion on the sport of turkey hunting and BTW, everyone has there opinion on that subject. I guess it's ok to shoot them out of a roosting tree as long as you have good shot placement. And with a shotgun you have to shoot them in the head or you wound them and they run off and die. Calling in a tom and shooting him at 9 feet w/a shotgun takes good shot placement. Your pattern is so tight you could miss.

My 12 y/o Son got this one just this morning. We have been hunting really hard, I bet the little guy has 15 days in this year. We had several toms with a flock of about 8 hens just above us on a ridge, (we roosted them last night). Someone came in below us and was hammering a box call pretty hard, the big tom in the group was hanging back and gobbling his fool head off. We followed them about a 1/2 mile up the ridge and finally were able to contour around and get really close. Every time the person below us called, the hens would run another 50 yards up the hill, dragging the toms with them. I've given this flock every call I have over the last month and played it quiet today.
This fellow wandered right into our lap while the main flock was about 65 yards away still. He took it at 40 yards. It has a righteous beard, but nubbin spurs and weighed 17#.

I took this jake a week ago. I don't generally shoot jakes, but I got this one on the 22nd day of hunting and was looking at tag soup.

We still have a couple tags left to fill in the family, I take my other Son out again tomorrow.
