Title: Spotting Scopes - Angled vs. Straight Eye Piece
Post by: h2ofowlr on April 24, 2012, 10:03:57 PM
I was looking at purchasing a new Swarovski spotting scope and was wondering as to why one would purchase an angled pattern vs. the straight pattern?
For those that own one, do you prefer the 80mm lenses or a 65mm lenses or somewhere in that range.
I will mainly be using it on short packs and hopefully also mounting my camera to if from time to time.

I prefer straight myself but both have their advantages.

Maybe this will help:

Strait! I do not like the angled scopes. Always seem to put in kink in my neck no matter how I use them :dunno: :dunno:

It's good to be straight!

I have an angled spotting scope and as a hunter I sure wish it was straight. If youre into birdwatching I suppose an angled is fine. I think the big reason is for sitting on a mountain up high and looking into the valley below. I make mine work but a straight would sure be ideal.

i have had both.. the angled can use a shorter tripod and which in turn can mean saving some weight packing

I can find objects quicker with straight.

Straight, just make sure you buy a tall tripod so you don't have to hunch over to look through it when you are standing!

I had a the Swaro STS 80..

Sold it for Swaro ATS 65

1.Backpacking.. Smaller.. the 65 is easier to pack around.. the 80 is just plain huge. Cool but huge. Not a noticeable enough difference in eye quality either to warrant the extra dough

2. Angled... I can attach it the tripod and I dont have to mess with the high of the tripod at all.. something super annoying to me. I can simple unpack it, sit my but on the ground and look down to see my sight picture.

To each his own!

i just bought a angled 80mm a couple of months ago havent spent to much time behind it but so far i love it. its really nice setting it up next to you at the range where its angled sidways and you dont have to move away from your rifle to check the targets

I have owned both and prefer the straight one. I find it easier to locate the target while looking down the side of the scope. :twocents:

I have had both.  +'s and -'s will covered.  If you get the angled, practice picking up in flight objects, solves the pointing problem pretty will.

I prefer straight as well but they both have their benefits if you glass for extended periods of time through your spotter I would consider the angled due to neck fatigue

Here are a couple guys using the straight Swaros and one using the angled Swaro, which one looks to be a pain in the neck?

The other two are using EL 10x42's :chuckle:

I may opt to go with the angled as I can use it on the range as well when competition shooting. Thanks for all the input.
