Title: upland bird hunting areas
Post by: KTC21 on April 25, 2012, 01:01:37 PM: I am new to Washington and am an avid pheasant hunter and would love to get tips or advice on where to hunt pheasants or any upland bird. I live in Redmond but heard the pheasant hunting isn't great in this area so am willing to drive just about anywhere.

Also, any tips on deer and elk would be appreciated as well.

With the price of gas and everything it's a much cheaper upland alternative than heading east of the mountains. The dogs love to hunt farm raised pheasants just as much as the wild ones. It's funner than one might think once them roosters wise up and know they're being hunted :Tupi:

Does Washington have any type of a 'Map' book that maps out where the public hunting areas are? I'm from North Dakota and every year they publish a book broken out by each square mile where the public hunting areas are.

Also, what are the laws on hunting private land? In ND if the private land isn't posted, you can legally hunt it with the exception of if there is standing crop in the field.

As far as the release sites in western WA, I read that in the latter part of the season they don't release any more birds, you basically are hunting the 'scratch' birds that were not harvested. Has anyone done that? Just wondering if it is worth the trip? And yes, I agree, my dog doesn't care if the bird is wild or farm raised, he just loves to hunt them.

Post by: AWS on April 26, 2012, 04:55:32 PM: Get a copy of the Washington Atlas and Gazzateer by DeLorme it has a listing of public hunting areas in the front of it. Hunting any private land is against the law posted or not unless you have permision. A public lands GPS chip is real handi here.

Used to work in ND Jamestown/Fargo/Grand Forks/Whapaton area.

I lived around the Fargo area and did a lot of hunting south and west of Fargo and made an annual deer/pheasant trip to the western part of the state by Medora.

Did you do much hunting when you were working in ND?

Post by: AWS on April 27, 2012, 03:32:44 PM: I did some control work on feral dogs in the Cheyenne Valley in the mid 80's but I lived on the otherside of the river and did my hunting and trapping in MN.

Have fun, there is a ton of public land out here and fair bird hunting, not on par with ND but pheasants, quail and chukar can be found and the duck hunting can be incredible.

I bet a couple weekends to the southeast spent talking to landowners would do you well. I would not go during seed or spray time....but any other. Skip the part about being a coastie and tell them you are from the Dakota's.
