Looks like archery guys are going to get a few cow tags this for a few areas that have been closed.

:IBCOOL:
-
Which ones are you refering to?
-
Looked like 50 tags for nile 50 for bumping and 50 split in the 328/329 units if um not mistaken. I've been buying ghost points just for this reason. Hopefully I'll have a slight edge over most of the archery guys that don't have points.

Yes we do. Bumping should be opened up completely but they are dragging their feet. They are supposed to meet with the archery coalition post season for full anterless prior to 2013. We need to keep the pressure on them.
I have been buying the points as well.

Good luck gentlemen. Stick a big one

There should be a smiley face smiling and clapping his hands, congrats to those that draw. A nice area and the cows in this area are big and

:yeah: I am happy about the 100 tags but not ecstatic, they should have reopened antlerless! Keep the spotlight on Goose Prairie! Still no explanation for why archers lost 1/2 our bull tags in 2010 and they haven't been restored. Open Goose Prairie for spike/antlerless and restore our 60+ bull tags!

I personally hope they never open goose prarie back up for antlerless. I think of it this way, when I finally draw a bull tag in the unit, its going to be a much better hunt without having all the idiots running around scaring the elk.
If you care about a cow that much you have little naches and rimrock, plenty of good hunting in those units. We have to leave at least a couple units for a true quality bull hunt. Odds will probably be pretty good to draw a cow tag also with 50 tags.

It would be nice to really have a quality area just for permit holders only but that's a totally different topic. I'm just glad to have some more hunts available.

I hear what your saying but with all the backcountry in those units you can get away from the ridge runners and most don't get that far off the beaten paths.
Until last year, my family and friends have packed into that back country for almost twenty years. We spend a lot of time, effort, and money to enjoy this beautiful country in the summer and fall. The increase in opportunity with antlerless hunting has made for a few years when we were able to fill a freezer with tender vittles to offset all the tag soup we've eaten. We also now have to put in the bull drawing as a group because without antlerless opportunity it's tough to see going if one guy gets drawn. We will also have to group up for an antlerless draw. With everyone at diffrent point levels it makes it ruff. Like you said we would be better served by abandoning our traditional hunting grounds for another unit. But selfishly we really don't want to and I don't think the other camps in our situation should have to either. With archers having opportunity in the other units you mentioned, the impact to Goose Prairie will be minimal.

Should have went eastside this year. Have 12 points in quality, bull, antlerless elk categories.

I couldn't disagree more. That strategy will lead to more lost opportunities. Plus the season was closed during a survey year with flawed results. Plus we have gone from 120 bull tags to 65. The percent decline is dramatic vs the other user groups. The unit can handle cow hunting without any issues. It did from 2002 to 2009 when I hunted it before they made the switch.

:yeah: If your not convinced read the first post under Goose Prairie Early Archery- Help.

bingo!
re: quote> "....much better hunt without having all the idiots running around scaring the elk.">"true quality bull hunt"<
this is reminescent of why AZ has permit only elk hunting in the prime AZ elk units.
in these prime units if you don't draw early or late season elk tags, then you don't hunt elk at all in those units.
And this past season, I made 2 trips scouting during those permit elk seasons. and those locals didn't appreciate me, especially a non-resident, doing so and let me know about it. I did so to learn the elk's habits when the hunting starts. Trips were also made in winter off season immediately after elk permit seasons too, more to note layout of the land-habitat and access points.
One of these years I hope to draw AZ. Points and spent dollars, non-resident at that, are really adding up!

I agree 100% and have sent letters to that affect.
