Title: What is the best ammo for 10/22?
Post by: Shoffy on April 27, 2012, 08:12:05 AM
Shooting Eastern OR ground squirrels with a standard off the shelf Ruger 10/22 carbine W/Bushnell Fixed 4x scope next month.

I've had good luck with CCI Stinger ammo. Just wondering what others have used??

Thanks!

The only comment I will make is that some 10/22's have a tendency to jam when using the cheaper all lead ammunitiion, but when using the more expensive copper jacketed ammunition they don't.  They hang up when feeding the next round on the softer lead.  The copper allows for harder / more slippery surface, so it doesn't hang up when feeding.

Just my two cents.

Lots of people thought the .22 mag in the 10/22 action were junk, because they would jam so frequently. Many would be rectified with copper jacketed ammunition.

Ive had a few 10/22's and typically its the mag that makes them jam for me.

Weak springs?  or not fitting correctly?

fit/wiggle, I have the 25 rnd hot lipps, if it wiggles a little itll jam, if I hold it forward a tad, I can blow through a whole mag with no jams.  Stock mags have always worked with any ammo for me.

For bulk ammo, blazers  shoot the best  out of mine.

I hate to admit this. I have had one for who knows how long and just now I'm finding out I could shoot mags through it too.

If am understanding what you are saying and you are talking about a standard 10-22, that is not the case.  Ruger made a run of 10-22's that were chambered specifically for the .22 mag...different gun than the standard Ruger 10-22.

Stingers are OK but not the best for accuracy.  CCI subsonics or CCI mini mags are both ultra reliable and very accurate.

THis is what a guy who did a lot of competitive shooting told me:

Companies (Like CCI) that make match grade ammo make them in "lots".  They set their loading machines to a setting and run off a "lot" of .22 ammo.  Before they stamp "Match grade" on the box, they weigh the rounds.  After they are checked (weighed), they mark them as "Match Grade" and that shipment goes out.  The next day they come in, and with the machine on the same setting, they run off several more lots of ammo.  These do not get weighed.  They just package them up and sell them as regular ammo (much cheaper).
So, in effect, the only difference between "match grade" and "regular" .22 ammo is that the match grade stuff has been weighed.
What he used to do was go to a store that had plenty of .22 ammo for sale.  Check the lot numbers and buy a small box of several different "lots".  Shoot a few rounds out of each box and determine which "lot" your rifle shoots best.  Then go back to the store and buy as much of the same "lot number" as you can afford.

If you are buying 10-22 mags BUY STEEL LIPS! they have less problems feeding than the hotlips. they don't wear as quick as the plasitic ones and if you heat the gun up they don't melt the plastic. (My brother did that to some of his hotlips mags) I shot plenty of bulk rem ammo and they worked fine for me. I like using the hollow points on sage rats, more damage.  :twocents: Also make sure you clean your rifle if you have shot a bunch and your gun starts jamming.  Have FUN!

A few years ago I started shooting CCI mini mags through my 10/22, the rifle ran fine on the mini mags but would jam with pretty much any other ammo I used. Just a couple of weeks ago I bought a brick of Blasers to try in my S&W 22A
That stuff feeds great in my 10/22 and is plenty accurats so I went to wholesale sports a bought a few more bricks.

aguila makes the best 22 rounds ive ever shot. normally with rim fire rounds you get a lot of miss fires in a box, but ive never had a single aguila round not fire. they also use ely match grade primer in there rounds. on top of that they are the fasted 22 round on the market. little things are twice as loud as any 22 round ive ever shot or heard and they are more accurate and consistent then any other round ive shot also.

The ones my dad bought back in the 70's still work for me,  I think I have a few thousand through it now with no problems  :dunno:

They all like different ammo. Mine likes CCI Mini Mags and Aguila Super and Hyper.

I have shot just about everything in .22 long that has been sold on the shelf.  The Remington 525 box count seem to be the crappiest ammo that I have shot through it with frequent duds, but I still have some left.  Probably ran 11 to 12 thousand rounds through one of my 10/22's.

I've shot just about everything through mine.   As stated its usually the aftermarket mags that will give you trouble and they do seem to do it more with the all lead stuff like the Remmington Thunderbolts or whatever.

I just included my oldest 10/22 in a trade. I've had that thing for many years and had every bit of 25,000+ rounds through it. I don't recall ever shooting anything but the bulk Winchester, Federal, and Remington stuff through it and it did plenty well with all of it and it was more than accurate enough for the sage rats, grouse, pop cans, and jack fir limbs I used it for. I never saw the need to shoot anything "better" i.e. more expensive, through the .22. I save the premium ammo for the bigger stuff.

I wouldnt keep any .22 that wont work reliably with the bulk 525 rd boxes of federal! That is my ammo of choice because its the cheapest most of the time, and it works much better than some of the crappy remington bulk ammo. My 10/22 runs perfectly on federal bulk, and so do all my other .22s.

I agree, I've shot thousands of rounds too and had the most duds with the cheap Remington ammo. Federal is cheap too, but it seems like there are fewer duds so I shoot a lot of Federal.

To avoid getting duds you need to spend more and get the better quality ammo and then there are very few duds.

I just tried the bulk Federal in the red box this weekend. Great ammo. I was really surprised how clean they were. Didn't have a single misfire in the box.
