Just curious what you guys think is the best light weight camo to wear in the early season that is reasonably priced? I need new camo this yr suggestions??
-
Cabelas microtex. The stuff is awesome for the price. If you are patient it will eventually go through the bargain cave and you can pick it up for cheap.
The Kryptek gear we have been using is real nice but the price is starting to get up there.
-
Whatever I can find cheapest. Walmart had a good selection last year.
Seriously. I lost all respect for hunting clothes making a damned bit of difference when I was a teen on a trip to Florida with my dad during hunting season one year, I saw my one of my uncles show back up to camp everyday with a deer hours before my other uncles and cousins. Most days his was bigger too. All my other cousins and uncles would leave camp camo'd up from head to toe. He'd leave camp in blue jeans and a button down denim shirt. It's about how you hunt, not what you're wearing. Not that I'd completely discount camo but, I learned on that trip that camo isn't all it's made out to be.
-
Sorry bud but I'm not wearing blue jeans and a denim shirt bow hunting lol. Jason I will look into that cabellas stuff. What's price range on the fancy stuff u wear?
-
It's more about the functionality of the clothes that you're wearing than the camo pattern.
If you're hunting the mountains, then you better have clothes that will handle the assorted NW weather. What kind of hunting will you be doing? If you're hunting farmland or tree stands or whatever...thats what will determine what will work best for you.

All cotton, due to the way it creates almost no noise, and can absord my cover scents very well. If it rains, oh well I get wet, its washington.
-
I'm looking for light weight highly breathable camo for early archery.

Lots of stuff makes almost no noise and will dry or maintain some degree of warmth before you become hypothermic.
Cotton won't do that.

So you won't be in the mountains then?

I don't either but, I don't go out and spend $30 for a t-shirt because it has the newest technology either.

Just make sure to coordinate your logo's. Can't describe how much you'll get made fun of if you have Mossy Oak pants and RealTree shirts

Lol the last set I bought were from cabelas but seemed to deteriorate every time I washed them. Cotton is a big no no its about the worst thing u can wear. I won't be way up in the mountains so it's usually fairly warm in the morning at hot in the afternoon. I looked at the microtex online looks like good stuff. Probably gonna check it out. I wore my cotton underwear once and chafed so bad it was ridiculous! My wife works at Under Armour so I may look into their hunting clothing as well but never tried it. It's expensive even with her discount.
-
For pants you cant go wrong with microtex for the money. Quiet, durable, and dries quick. I will be trying out some other pants options, But so far microtex has served me very well.
For tops: If I could only have one... Merino. I have been wearing a top from sitka and love the stuff. Will prolly look at kiui, firstlite, and kryptek as well. During some early season hunts when the weather is mild and risk of sudden weather changes are less of a concern I wear predator tees. A cotton poly blend they work well.
I have alot of UA gear as well..... Really like the underwear... Never have chafed since switching. I like some of their mid weight stuff and fleece pants are ok later in the season or if its cooler. Their early season/warm weather type gear is not that great tho IMO. The heat gear shimmers, and stinks after a day. Plus it has little insulating value at all if the temps do dip.

Thanks BV

as walmart go's, last year they were selling silver thread Oder killing shirts. they were like 20 bucks and long sleeve. i bought one and loved it. if they have them this year and i got the money ill buy a few more. then i wear fleece over it. same on bottoms in the afternoon hunt ill wear fleece bottoms. then depending on the temp in the morning ill wear fleece or fleece with a outer layer normally water proof so my legs dont get wet from the dew.
i love fleece because its so silent through brush. no noise compared to most other cloths. and it doesnt make noise when it rubs against its self when you move.
my biggest thing is that i would rather be warm and dry and not get to shoot, then be wet and miserable and shaking and not be able to shoot.
i always dress warm and throw stuff in my pack as i warm up! :twocents:

I over heat easily and sweat like crazy in the hot season. Every single thing a wear from my underwear, socks, pants, shirt, and hat is Under Armour heat gear. That stuff Is incredible in my opinion, especially if youre a sweater like me, and it has lasted me for a lot longer than the stuff I used to wear. I just waited for really good sales or to find stuff in the bargain cave at Cabelas and I didn't end up paying more than I would have for anything else.
-
During early season I love my under armour light weight coat. Its not waterproof but it will keep the dew off while you are hunting the brush in the morning. Its light weight so it is nice when you throw it in the pack. I usually wear camo under armour underneath it and then a t shirt and some good light weight pants. I dont like jean material just because they are not comfortable to me for hiking. I like my cabelas bibs with the lining taken out, and a good pair of compression shorts.
-
Ya the heat gear is good. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
-
pretty much what ever you get your gona get used to,and if you dont your not using it enough. dont worry about cost either.high end shirts tend to last longer.even UA shirts stuff began to wear out from extended use with a backpack.so far (2years) sitka is holdn strong.try an stay away from synthetics as they kinda suck when wet. the exact weight of the clothes pretty much depends on your hunting style, 5 different hunters will have 5 different clothing set ups.
also with camo try having an open pattern on bottom and a more digi style patern on top

I could not agree with you more. This stuff is bullet proof, quiet and very colorfast. For the money it is really hard to beat. I've had the uninsulated jacket since the first year they offered it. Just now wore out the zipper. Rest of the jacket looks 90% new. Having a new zipper put on for less than 25 bucks. $$$ divided by about 15-18 years...that's a good buy!
Sizing does very quite a bit. Enough that I do not recommend purchasing it on-line. Instead, go to the store and take every pair they have in your size into the fitting room. Try them all on and choose the best fit. I have never regretted buying any of my Microtex.
-
I dont think you could go wrong with firstlite merino wool. They are having 50% off last years clothes on there web site.
-
I have bought Core4Element from Camofire and I love it!
-
Another vote for Microtex! Great cost, comfortable, long lasting, Quick drying, different patterns. Why wouldn't you like it?

Except it only fits if you're a 12 year old girl.

it fits my wife great and shes twice as old as that! :chuckle:
-
Microtex and wool are the only bowhunting clothes I own. (If needed, Polypro of some brand underneath.)
-

Kinda like the Sitka 90% pants? :chuckle:
-
I will buy a $30 tshirt over a cotton based one thats for sure,, i have a Kings long sleeve that I love...I also have the sitka 1/4 zip pullover that fits extremly well, and is super quiet. I have the cabels dry plus light weights that are very quiet and breathable on summer days also my kings pants are extremly quiet
-
I have been really happy with the Rocky Sent IQ bowhunting pants and tops. Stuff is light weight, super quite and bullet proof in regards to snagging, ripping, etc.
-
I have bought Core4Element from Camofire and I love it!
:yeah:x2 I've replaced just about all of my camo this year on Camofire. Get their updates.
-
Light weight merino from KUIU and Sitka, Core crew, and the Ascent pants, or Cabelas micro-tex. The Ascent pants sweat quite a bit when hiking a lot, but are the lightest Sitka offers. Zero complaints on the micro-tex.
-
Except it only fits if you're a 12 year old girl.
Kinda like the Sitka 90% pants? :chuckle:
They fit you just fine though dont they mtnmuley!?!?!

You'll have to judge that yourself, sweetheart.

Another vote for UA here. The early season gear they came out with last year kicks butt!

Should we give you two some privacy? :chuckle: :chuckle:

I wear under armour t shirts under my longsleeve
-
heres an idea for you tikka, you should try every brand out there so you know what is best. or as you told me once,"figure it out yourself".

Tavis...just go out in your skibs and roll around in an elk wallow...what better camo is there?? 8)
-
Wow you guys are something else. Grouse tracker a wears a bikini when hunting!
-

Yeah, "oh we'll" I'm just 9 miles behind a gate with a dead ealk, im soaking wet in cotton clothing which is leaching any heat from my body. No thanks you won't find a single stitch of cotton in any of my hunting clothes. I hope your kidding around.
I really like the new micro fabric stuff that Predator has come out with, great patterns and lasts forever. Light weight and dries quickly, keeps you warm when it is wet. I got caught in a couple down pours last year in the late season before I could get my rain gear on and that stuff didn't hardly get wet at all. Great gear IMO.
-
Good stuff, I wore the pants last year for around 15 days in the field early and late season combined and they still look brand new.

AKBowman, how warm are those pants? Are they too warm for early September archery elk? I'm needing some new pants and will have to check these out.
-
I've hunted many times with blue jeans and a camo jacket. As long as the wind is in your favor, limit your movement and use some scent control your going to be fine. Tip: Washing clothes in a scent control detergent is very effective, but hang them outside to dry. Throwing them in the dryer will get them contaminated with the perfume smells of previous loads. I found that out the hard way.
-
Cabelas Microtex Pants and Red Head long sleeve T or Mock T on top. The Red Heat shirts are a lot thinner than Cabela's cotton T's so they breath really well. I always carry some longies in my pack to throw on if I start getting soaked and cold.
The Microtex light doesn't have enough pockets for my needs or I would try it too. BP Red Head has some good looking stuff, but the Microtex is tried and true.

Kuiu hands down

The Kryptek gear we have been using is real nice but the price is starting to get up there.
+1. I wear microtex pants, they're really quiet and I have two seasons on my pair (100's of miles through brush...) they're tough.
I wear an under armour top with long sleeves...if it's hot I wear the heat gear, if it's cold i switch to coldwear.
I wear a wool shirt over the top in the morning and keep a mountain hardware ultralight windbreaker in my pack all the time.
QUIET is the key for bowhunting. You can break all the branches in the woods without spooking game, but one denim brush against brush and they're gone! Microtex pants are awesome- i just ordered a backup pair!

when I hunt the west side I use Predator Green Deception, for me I feel this is the best early season camo on the market. take a look on there web site, I think you will like it.
