Delicious.

When you "get some rabbits", try this....

Tuscan Stlye Rabbit
1 lemon
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary or 1/2 teaspoon dried
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 pounds rabbit pieces

Grate the rind from the lemon. Place in a 9" x 13" baking dish with the juice from the lemon, oil, garlic, rosemary and pepper. Add the rabbit and turn the pieces to coat all sides. Cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Turn the pieces occasionally. Bake the rabbit uncovered at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. Turn the pieces frequently and baste with pan juices until the rabbit is tender and the juices run clear when you pierce the meat with a fork. If desired, broil the meat for a few minutes to achieve a light brown color.

Slurpity Slurp!

Yeah, you have to wait until the blackberries are ripe............since you have to wait until Sept to hunt them (unless you don't mind poaching).

oh ok i didn't know rabbits were fall only.  so are pretty much all animals only huntable in the fall? If that's the case, I'll just focus on fishing for now and worry about it later

Cottontail Rabbit and Snowshoe Hare 5/day, see notes Statewide:
Sept. 1, 2012 - Mar. 15, 2013 Possession limit: 15 straight or mixed bag
Forest Grouse 4/day, see notes Statewide:
Sept. 1 - Dec. 31 Possession limit: 12 straight or mixed bag

The best think to do is walk old logging roads right after a rain. with a 22lr you can hunt for rabbit or Grouse. the season run together and use a small game licence..  Another thing to look for is Salmon berries. grouse love them and they seem to grow in many areas near loggin roads... The best thing to do is do some MT biking or hiking and find some likely spots that have grass and berries. Generally go into the hills around the greater seattle area.  :twocents:

While I will NEVER encourage or condone poaching.....

We had them ALL OVER the Microsoft campus. (We also had those "funny mushrooms" all over the campus grounds).

They're also thick over by the overlake area on 156th.

Don't hunt them there. That is against the law.  :)

At least take some pics of the rabbits if your out there looking at them.  Where I live there is several that are mixed with domestic rabbits and its funny to see lop eared wild rabbits.

I find lots up high on the wetside.  Once you get into the sub-alpine/alpine firs.  They start running around all over as the sun goes down.

Eastern Gray Squirrels are an unregulated animal in this state and as such can be taken at any time of year. But because they live in mostly urban areas if you choose to hunt them you first need to learn the municipal and/or county regulations on shooting/hunting to be sure you are allowed to discharge a firearm whereever it is that you find a good population of Eastern Grays.

squirrels are everywhere. Would take quite a bit to feed me or clothe me.

on a side note, when it comes to hunting, do you all tan your own hides or have someone else do it? doesn't seem that hard and it would be cool to make rugs out of them

I've not tanned any but have a few in the freezer for "when I get the time." A number of my friends have tanned their own big game hides and made clothing, quivers, etc from them. A very good book on the subject is called something like "From Bucks to Buckskins." Squirrel rawhide is very tough, making reliable cordage.

If you do decide to try your hand at squirrels be positive they are Eastern Grays before you shoot. I think that all other species in Washington, being native, are protected by law.

I find most of my rabbit areas by leaving the woods in the dark.  Usually trying to get back to the truck or camp fast with the headlamp on and see them in the road.  Not legal to hunt them at night but it is useful for finding good spots for daytime hunting later.  First and last light is about the only good time to hunt them without a dog.

can you bait them out with a tray of food and wait there? or is that illegal/unethical?

Are you for real?  Do you really want to bait rabbits?  Doesn't sound like much fun to me...........

I haven't heard about it being illegal; I don't think it is, but don't know for sure.  I suggest you download the regs and read them. :twocents:

I've seen several posts about how to learn hunting skills, and the general message seems to be "Contact an Outfitter".

From what I understand, Bearpaw Outfitters is a pretty good outfit. That way, you can learn from the pro's and you'll have an experienced hunter to help you scout, equip yourself and shooting/bowhunting skills.

Bearpaw is here on HW..... Try sending him a message to see what he recommends.

And in the meantime....

Gwab one a doze wascly wabbits at the store and make some wabbit stew to make sure you like wabbit eating!

Question.  Can you trap rabbits in this state?  Growing up in WI my dad would have a string of box traps set all over rural Milwaukee country in the winter and we ate  A LOT of rabbit.

When we moved to the country I snared alot of them(not legal in WA ?) in the fence rows around the house.

Nothing better than stewed rabbit with dumplings and sweet/sour red cabage.

Yes, one may trap rabbits in Washington State during open season.  One may NOT trap Jack Rabbits and Pygmy Rabbits.

Cottontail Rabbit and Snowshoe Hare
5/day, see notes Statewide:
Sept. 1, 2012 - Mar. 15, 2013 Possession limit: 15 straight or mixed bag

Pygmy Rabbit, Jackrabbit Closed statewide, year-round

You can read more info at the WDFW site here:

You'll have to wait until Sept. 1, 2012 for fresh wabbit stew

I dont see where it says they can be trapped.  What you posted are the hunting regulations.  As far as I know the only way you can trap them legally is if they are on your property and causing damage.  I would love it if you are right though.

Legal Status

Because legal status, trapping restrictions, and other information about rabbits change, contact your local wildlife office for updates.

The Nuttall's cottontail rabbit, Eastern cottontail rabbit, and snowshoe hare are classified as game animals. A hunting license and open season are required to hunt them.

A property owner or the owner's immediate family, employee, or tenant may kill or trap the above species on that property if they are damaging crops or domestic animals (RCW 77.36.030). In such cases, no permit is necessary for the use of live (cage) traps. However, a special trapping permit is required from the Department of Fish and Wildlife for the use of all other types of traps.

The domestic rabbit is unclassified and may be trapped or killed year-round and no permit is necessary; however, the above restrictions on trapping devices still apply (RCW 77.15.192).

 :yeah:

My thoughts exactly.

As far as learning to hunt as a newbie, if you can find and sneak up on a rabbit, you can probably sneak up on a deer.  It is good practice for your woodsmanship skills.

We trapped a lot back in WI as well, sometimes we'd even give them a chance to get away and release them instead of bonking them... we missed a few when they would zig instead of zag.   :chuckle:

Mendozer, if you like rabbit, try porcupine, open year-round, I think.  Just a little harder to skin.   :yike:

We used to hunt them over a little beagle and it was a ball,  Hit the marshes in the winter with a couple of 410's.  It's just about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

Does it say it is not legal?

They have this on the web site -

TRAPPING SEASONS & RULES

Bobcat, Raccoon, Coyote, Fox, Cotton Tail & Snowshoe Hare

But then there is no mention of CT's or SH's in it.   :dunno:  I'm guessing you would need to take the trapping test and have a trapping license though.

There is no mention of CT or SH in the fur bearing regs but there is also the application for problem animals under that same section.  Rabbits are game  animals not fur bearing animals.  Again I would be very happy if I am wrong. Thats why I want to figure this out.  Maybe that is something we can do as a group is add rabbits to the trapping season (if it turns out that it is not already).

Changed to protect the innocent??   :chuckle:

Kain, it does seem to be some kind of oversight to mention bunnies in the header of the trapping section and then say nothing about them in the body of the regs.

Does anyone know about San Juan islands rabbits?  They are non-native domestic stock, are there any regs on them?
